Speaker Cauthorne evidently has a high appreciation of the working capacity of the members from this part of the State. — As a BANNER reporter was searching after items late on Tuesday night, he ran across a farmer who had just come to town in search of two sharpers who had sold him a patent hayfork, for $6OO, and, as usual, after they had skipped found the papers to be “no go6d.” The reporter’s pumping machine was set to work to learn his name and where he lived, but all to no purpcse. —A few days before the close of the year 1878 Mr. Smith Hays, son of Wm. D. Hays, of the Hawpatch, left for Mineville, N. Y., where he expected to be married to Miss Clara, daughter of J. B. Foltz, formerly of this place. On the way there Mr. Hays took sick, and he reached his destination in ‘quite an exhausted condition, so much so that he at once took to his bed. Word vas thereupon telegraphed to his father, informing him of his son’s condition, and he at once repaired to his bedside. All hope of final recovery was, it seems, given up from the first, but the young man lingered along until on Monday, when he quietly breathed his last. A short tifme before his death the young couple were married. We 'have not learned particulars as to. his age, but should judge that he had reached his 25th year. This morning’s train bro’t his remains back to this place, his home, which he had left but a few days before with such fond anticipations. No better eulogy could be placed"upon Smith lays’ character than to say that he was an exemplary young man, in whose footsteps it. would be well if more of the young men of our town were to follow. o
THE “ANTI-SMELLERS.”—The fifth anhual social of this associdtion or club was held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. A. 8. Fisher on Monday eve., and those who were there enjoyed the hospitalities hugely. That the readers of THE BANNER may know the origin and history of the club a reporter interviewed one of its members on Tuesday when the following infermation was gleaned: On the evening of January 11th, 1874, ten young men met at Zimmerman’s Store for the purpose of having a high old time. No eclub or organization was thoufight of at the time. Budt one of those individuals who are constantly sticking their nose into éther people’s business, was “smelling around,” as the boys termed it, and reported their doings, and hence the name “Anti-Smellers;” from ‘which we infer that each one of the above ten dre opposed to the *stick-your-nose-into - other - people’s-busi-ness”—all of which is very commendable. One year later, in 1875, the same ten met and organized a club, and at once the above name was dubbed; the mnumber of members was limited to the ten ; meetings to be held annually. It was also agreed that when any member should get married he was to be made the recipient of a present by the club. Since then several of the bays have “doubled up,” ard each one has received very hardsome and costly presents. At the past two or three meetings invitations have been extended to friends, and a grand feast ‘was spread. These annual re-unions being such enjoyable occasions, it has been decided to continue them fer ten years. i :

At the expiration of their term of office they removed: to the city of Fort Wayne and resided there ever since. Mrs. Holverstott united with the Christian church at Broadway about twenty years ago, since which. time her life has gracefully corresponded with her holy profession. Hence she was fully prepared to meet death with composure,, Of her it may well be said, these who knew her best respected her most. She lived beloved and died lamented. In this dispensatien the husband is deprived of an affectionate companion, the children (six in number) of a kind and tender mother, and society of ore of its brightest ornaments. Her loss will be extensively felt, and her momory will long be cherished in the pleasurable recellections of her surviving friends. The funeral services were performed by Elder Peter Winebrenner, at the Broadway Chapel on Sunday, the 12th, in the presence of a large and sympathizing audience. Her remains were then slowly borne to the Wolf Lake cemetery, followed by an extensive train. ; ! January 14, 1879. iC. W.
