- The Red Ribbonites met.at the M. 'E. Church on Tuesday evening for the purposé of transacting business and listening to addresses. The first speaker called ou was Dr. Crum, who took the stand and said his heart, ¢onscience and every thing taught him that temperafice was. right, and he deemed’ it proper to state that he did not come hefe to say anything that would block the wheels of temperance in its ‘good and noble work, buf heé combatted the assertion that no use could be made of alcohol as a medicine or stimulant. He read from a medical work an instance of a lady being bitten on the tongue by a black spider, and she was cured by the-application of whisky-in copious quantities. e said that Rev. Mahin had made the rémark that he had been bitten twice by rattlesnakes, aud that each time he had been cured by lard and sulpbur. “He doubted the story, &s these articiés were never considered antidotes for poison. He deemed it right and proper that stimulants shoul! be used in certain cases, as common sense taught that they would supply deliciencies in ease of disease. The Dr. was followed by Elder Ebert, who said that at the next meeting lie would combat the Doctor’s theories; that he thought'it just and ‘manly in a person to stand by his aetions and teachings, and that he would no doubt find out’ere he got through that there were other physicians in town besides Dr. Cram. = T « - -Dr., Knepper- was asked to make a tew remarks; when he @réée" and said. he had no idea that heshould be called upon to say anything; that he was ‘greatly interested in the discussion as now carried on; and thatif anything should be left of his side-of the question by the time Elder Ebert got thiro’, hé might be tempted to make some remarks, but until then he should hold his peaee.. - P

Rev. Mahin then took the tloor, and said there had been a misunderstanding about the question at issue; that a misstatement had been made in last week’s issue of THE BANNER; a copy of which he produced, and after maks mg tlie correction, he proceeded with his side of the argument.. He ¢laimed he was-actually cured of rattlesnake Dbites, on two different occasionsg by the use of hog’s lard and sulphggathat he had nothiixg by which to p,f@e" his assertion, but he would pladge his word and honor as a man that it was. 80. In answer to Prof. Luke’s argument of the week previous lie said that the Professor had pounced upon him with a stack of works on physiol-ogy-and chemistry by which to show that alcohol was uourishing as a food, but that he. (Mahin) knew nothing about these studies, and, therefore, could not téll whether the Professor’s arguments were well founded or not, that he treated only with. theolegical subjects. He then proposed fo make a test: that the two doctors and the Professor should use ‘nothing but alcohol, and he (Mahin) would use bread and water, to see whether there was any nourishment in alcohol. I he gave in first then he would admit the other ‘side to be in the right, but, if not, then the other party was to give up and admit they were in the wrong.

Prot. Luke was then asked whether he had any remarks to make, when that gentleman arose and delivered a somewhat Tengthy address. He ‘said he did‘not propose to be limited in his remarks to any pa'rticular'»length of time; that it wés a subject demanding deep thought and study, and that it would take more than one address to get through with the whole subjeet; that what he should say would be in the interest of O#ruth, that if truth must go down in order to satisty the public clamor heiwas ready and willing to go down withit. 7

The Prof. thenl cited an instance of a_celebrated: scientist (Napier) who took 25 cases of intemperate persons and cured them all by subjecting them toa vegetable diet, one of these cases being of 35 years standing. He believed _th:,{b the saloon was -a produect of society, and in order to root it out, the cause of its existence must be eradicated. There was a demand for it and as long as that demand existed, there would be some one to supply it: Prof. Luke glaimcq( that while temperance revivals had resulted in good,’ the evil of intemperance could not be wholly removed until temperance people studied the problem from a' rational standpoint. .~ - 4

In answer to Rev. Mahin’s proposed test he said that gentleman misunderstood him’; that if he (Luke) proved that life-could be sustained the onesixteenth part of a second, he had sustained his point. TheProf, then went on toshow that many of the evils aristng from the use of alcoholic drinks ‘a3 a beverage were caused by bad "cooks; that many people use alcohol to aid free digestion, which would not be the case if good, nourishing food, “properly prepared, was placed before them. In concluding, lie went farther, and said that a large per cent. of the ladies of thisand other countries were tipplers ou the sly; that they seemed te require a stimulant in order to.bear: the excitements of our falsely so-call-ed soclal eivilization. He farther said intemperance was an evil which he: regretted, and that if the discussion ~of the. question fiwwfivifl*mrwal weaken the, femperatice: gauge. he-for. _one would withdraw.from the discuaMo Soneß s o e e " Another meeting will be lield inthe ing, wher, 4§ above stated, Elder ey L weha ot Bhigerton, of.
