“+=The ancient Greek plulosopher, Epicurus, teaches that virtue 1s the result of happiness; the living French metaphysician, Cousin, that bappiness is the legitimate result of the practice of virtue.. —Nothing will more readily prompt a reflective man to silently ponder upon the suddenness of earthly changes. than to be instantaneously propelled from the fragrant sweetness of a moving conservatory into the prosy dust of the jworld below, and that, too, without the remotest regard as to which end of his physical structure first kisses mother earth. Moreover, it turns his attention to gravitation’s laws. Ask our young hardware clerk for his philosophical ideas upon the subject. He is peculiarly adopted to consider it in all its manifold bearings. ~lt is speaking well for the development of yoathful morality in our midst, to note the rspecial aptness. evinced by the “little innocents (?),” in the matter of storing away in the mind and appropriately applying an extensive variety of suggestive phrases and emphatic expressions, principally of scriptural origin, with, however, a much more euphonious arrangement of words and accents than characterizes ‘the sacred writings.
