Saisline, weighmaster at this station, kindly fornishes us with the following interesting item: The first load of new wheat was delivered at the elevators in this place on the 15th of July, and up to this time 1014 loads ‘were brought to the same place. During the same time 63 car loads, averaging 25,000 pounds to the car, were shipped from this station. The receipts for the past week were Wednesday, 70 loads; Thursday, 88 loads; Friday, 94 loads; Saturday, 123 loads; Monday, 60 loads; Tuesday, 5 loads; Weanesday, 88 loads. Communicated. ' : : Intemperance. 1f some one would say there was to be a great conflagration in Ligonier, and attest that it was se, how ‘every one¢ would be ready to fight it. And yet intemperance is here with a power as destructive, and scarcely a man ‘of any influence dare raise his voice against it. They say or do no more than it they were dummies. But if they are so void of feeling as not tobe willing to -do it for the sake of the drinking men and their poor suffering wives and children, they should do it for their own self-interest, for every cent that is spent in the saloons is so much out of their store and shops. Did not oneof the reformed men prove this, by saying the reason he could not get the clothes hislittle girl asked him for, so that she could attend Sunday-school, was because he had spent it at the saloon? 1t proves beyond a doubt that if it was not spent for whisky it wo’d be spent in-some useful way. And our business men complain of hard times, and do not lend a helping hand to this cause. Letthem complain. For my part I do not intend to trade at a store that does not ceuntenance the red ribbon. How many of the temperance workers are willing to join me inthis? | . TEMPERANCE.

A Loud Call for Inks. (Kendallville News.)

We cordially endorse the above in reference to one of the old citizens of this county and a valuable member of society. Mr. Inks is closely identified with the prosperity of this part of the State, and has an extensive acquaintance in this county. He has been a hard-working man and hasaccumulated a nice property by labor and toil. He has taken a deep interest in the political affairs of county and State and is well prepared to discharge the duties of Representative in the State Legislature at Indianapolis. He will Ppoll every vote in his own party and has many warm friends in the other parties of the county who would be willing to trust him as a Legislator, Let C. V. Inks be nominated and we will insure his election. ;

* Progress of the Temperance Work, - The golden harvest continues to be: realized as the natural result of the teachings of eternal right. The standard upon which is imprinted the exalted precept “Dare to do Right,” continues to marshal under its folds hundreds of deserters from the enem_y’a’i camp, who are being brought to see the “error of their ways;” it is becoming’i symbolical of a greater power than ever before. Those who had come te regard the laten¢y of interest in the cause as eévineing an unmistakable indication of it final abandonment, have had more reason than ever, during the past week, to fully realize the erroneousness of such an inference, and to conclude that the discussion of the question, though it may become less ! noticeable at times, is destined to occupy a prominent and permanent pcsition in the minds of those of our people who have the welfare and happi-

ness of their kind at heart—who have not only an eye to the furthering of individual interests, but to the promos tion of those of the community in general. s S

That the good which Mr, Hallenbeck is accomplishing here under that phase of the question, known as Gospel Temperance, continues to increase, rather than diminish,is highly encouraging to the disciples of the movement. They are becoming actually astonished at the continued success ‘with which Mr. Hallenbeck. is meeting whenever and wherever he may choose to appear. 1t is our candid opinion that were he to remain with us a month longer, three fourths of the people hereabouts would enlist themselves under the banner of right and battle for its protection. The longer he remains, the more fully does he cause the people to: realize the. enorigous evils of intemperance, and the duty which each one owes, not only to himself, but to his fellow man. In a word, his work here is proving unprecedented and incalculable in its results, and the indebtedness due him from our people is such that it cannot he paid in dollars and cents,'but: must ever remain an uncancelled obligation. His thrilling personal experience as. an inebriate; his force and impressiveness of description; his consist--ent and logical deductions; his plain, unassuming manner; his touching application;of moral suasion; and, above all, his.earnestness and sincerity of purpose (qualities previously .commented upon), are the elements in the character of the man which eminently fit him, in every respect, for the laudable pursuit in which he is so ardently engaged—elements, also, which explain his extraordinary success. . We heartily recommend Mr. Hallenbeck to the favorable consideration of all temperance organizations for his unlimited capacity to do good in the glorious ¢ause which he so zealously espouses. IHe is truly an individual whom we cordially like in every respect, and from whom we are loth to separate. %2

Mr. Hallenbeck will conclude his series of meetings this evening by delivering' his farewell address. He heartily requests all to attend, especially those- who have not yet: signed the pledge. : W.

Go to the Fair. ' ¢ Just as reading others’ thoughts enlarges and stimulates one’s own thinking, so-contact with other men, seeing what they'do, what they show ; asking ‘how :they produce this or that good thing, cannot fail to afford some new hints and do one good. A day at the Fair lifts one out of daily drudgery; the sight of so wany people engaged in the same calling, helps one out of that low view which the great mass of farmers set upon their own pursuit. However much farmers may talk of the dignity of their calling, there is in their hearts too low an estimate of it. If a son goes into a store, or a daughter marries a merchant or professional man, they speak of it as something fo be proud of." But they. should remember that agriculture from the time of Adam down, has been and is the noblest calling. Going to the Fair will help in this and many other ways. Go early in the day and make an intelligent examination of "the articles on exhibition before ‘the horse racing begins. No one will fail of being benefitted if they attend the Fair with that object in view. 4 : > —_———— 4 SOUTH WASHINGTON ITEMS.
