The Temperance Rally a Grand t - The.temperance meeting last SunAv%afiem n, beneath the citcus tent, w figtfié‘ propptor kindly consentT L T L R e R R ed toleaye ;remain standing for the -purpese), was the grandest affair of ,fi“fiiflfl that has honered our town : RMop §3oilgSk BE ey i e e the inaugdration of the move‘ment here two years ago—it was a success indeed. - The simple announce--ment that Mr. Hallénbeck; well and favorably known fo our people for the noble and highly successful campaign he carried on here against “King Alcohol” orte year ago last Spring, causing the great quéstion of total abstinence to be first adequately agitated in this vieinity, was amply sufficient to bring together the large attendance that greeted the speaker on this oceasion. Mr. Hallenbeck’s disconrse did not fail' to partake of that nafure invariably so' grandly characteristic of his addresses — a repletion of good, praciicable, sttikingly logical views upen the subject, not. unaccompanied by that: unmistakable sincerity and earnestness of purpose- which stamp himasamong the greatest temperance workers of the day. The occasion being the first of a series of meetings to be held here'under the auspices of the geutlemdn in question, augured well for the pénding campaign against the ‘monster vice, and indisputably dispels the opinionthat the tidal wave of temperance had reached its flood and begui'its recession, destined ere long to e mambered among ihe the things that were. rnglt taught that the question had only become gormant—the interest in"it latent-—dnd that it bat required the tinge of enthusiasm to re-agitate it in all its fary and cause it to develop and assume greater proportions than before. The following is the gist of Mr. Hallenbeck’s remarks: He was glad to appear once 'more among his numerons friends in this vicinity; glad to see that the majority of those who had signed the pledge were remaining faithful to its sacredpess, tie was sorry, however, that the society, as an organization, was not in & mote prosperous condition—more active in. the gl;res.t. work under its charge, and attributed this deficiency, not inconsiderably, to the non-participation of our businesg men in the mattér. . The growth and prosperity of an institution™was accelerated or retarded in proportion to the intdrest or non-interest manifested toward it by the magses, Passive assent in lien of active recoguition, accomphshed very little in the question of temperance. To be considered a temperance man now-a-days, fecessitated one to identify himself in an active manner with the great question of total abstineucg as it exists at the present time; he must be positive regarding the matter, and not simply remain negative, The results of iutemgerance were too plainly visible. ' Whisky would never cause a man whose labor was confined to the mere physical; to ascend (tu that, in any degree, designated the intellectufil—iever in the world. It never ‘'would condnce Lo his maral elevation, but tend to aegrade him—to keep him down.— The flower of our land were falling conquered victims to the foe, It not/only environed ia Its mesheg the.common labordr and the artisan, but the professional man—the man of eulture and acknowledged ability, ]ikewigtl:. From this he considered it illogical to suppose that the drunkard betrayed a weakness of intellect—a lack of mental stamina, when some of the most brilliant geniuses that ever graced the halls of the United ‘States Senate had permanently yielded themselves to the intoxicating cup. It was only the noble, the generous, whole-souled man—the sociable, the convivial companion, that: ever became the dfunkard ; not the miserly di%pOSed. the penuarious. Wot men, alonhe, were addicted to the vice, bnt .women: also, and he wished to unpress the latter, not only with the care they ought to exercige in not tempting men to drink, but in refraining from indnlging themselves. It ‘was in the “social glags” that lay the impending danger of becoming ibe drunkard. All drunkards ‘were once social drinkers and scorned the idea that they hadnot sufiicient resolution to maintain’ suclll & position. . There were many phases of the temperance question, but he had no faith in any than vhat of Gospel Temperance. e did not believe that the mere signing of the pledge and the doning of the red ribbon wounld avail any permanent good, nnaided by religious faith, in evidence of which he cited a portion of the history of his own life. llle, however, deemed the signing of the pledge a noble step—noble in the fact that after it had been taken, there would then be audience for therpreaching of Christ and the affecting of a permanent benefit, In his view, the saloon keeper was uot deserving: ‘of 80 much censure; he was granted a license by the governmeént—both municipal and State—permitting him to deal out the poisonous drug, and, therefore, legally, was none other than a respected citizen, parsuing af honorable calling.; Whom he blamed were the people themeelves for countenancing such laws, and he desired to so revoJutionize public opinion that the laws might Be repealed and tne business become unlawful.— “Morally, ‘he envied the occupation ot the highwayman to that of the vender of intoxicating beverage.
LATER.~On Monday evening the meeting was very interesting. It was said by many y‘vho were present to be the best temperance lecture ever delivered in Ligonier. Mr. ITallenbeck fairly outdid himself, and caused the idea to take hold of our people more strongly than ever, if that be possible, that heis'the man perfectly fitted in every respect for the exalted calling in which he is so zealously engaged.
