Life! What Is It?

. Dowelive? orsimply stay and tread the earth, aimless, worthless and insignificant—meeting out a shambling existence, wifh no purpose but to sate our morbid appetites of sordid ambi~ tion, and pull down to our own level allemulating and aspiring, noble-mind-ed men and women who live so far above the little things of earth, they know .not of the busy haunts of sin, suffering and despair, and human wreck and ruin everywhere strewn along our pathway. °~ > o Are we not under-sentence of death, written out with our own hand, and illustrated with pictures of our rough hewn pathway? Health, destructive, and suicidal it may be, or life-invigo-rating and health-inspiring, prolonging life to a senile age of usefulness and esteem, enabling us to look back and see and feel that all our avocations have contributed to the welfare of our fellow-associates, and that they ‘have been made better by the association, thus fulfilling the great mission . as directed by our Creator. Or have we soo sinned against our physical nature or being that we have incurred the penalty of those immutable laws that govern and control the universe, knowing no variableness nor shadow of turning? And are we daily writing out that sentence with our own hand, by wanton neglect and indiscreet madness? viz: To be wasted away with Consumption; ° Burned up with Fevers; Eaten up with Cancers; Suffocated with Asthma;. ] Strangled with Quingy; ‘ Poisoned with the cup of excesses; Or racked to death with disorders as loathsome and casualities as varied as pencil can poitray. If so, go to Prof. G. W. VanVleék, M. D., for consultation. He will direct all to the purer blessings of life. He will be in Ligonier, on his regular monthly visit, on Monday, April 29th, that all the afflicted may avail themselvas of his skillful practice, and be restored to health.

Noblesville Obituaries.

1t is with deep regret that we record the death of another of our intelligent young ladies. Rachel, wife ‘of'vgg A. Stewart, died April 14th, aged 22 years, 1 month, and 20 days. Deceased was a person of more than ordinary intelligence, and was highly respected and beloved by all who knew her. I have known her from her early childhood days, and must speak in respectful terms of her entire course through life. She embraced religion when but 13 years of age, and was a strict mem--ber-of the Christian Church. She took great interest in our Sunday Schools, not only in singing praises, but in ‘teaching the youthful minds by word and action to follow the straight and narrow path. But her voice is hushed in death; another bright star has set to rise no more. A very able and impressive discourse was delivered on the occasion of her funeral by Elder :P.Winebrenner, from Revelations xiv: 17-19; after which her remains were laid in their last resting place. Aninfant child, kind-hearted husband, and. numerous friends and relatives are left to mourn theirt}oss. . ; ’ .On the 17th'inst. father Samuel VonSwearengen died; aged 68 years, 2 ‘months, and 2 days. He was for many years a faithfal member of the Presbyterian Church. 'He came to this section of the country from Ohio several years ago, and was always a hard worker, having spent the greater part of his days in converting our wilderness into a garden. He was a friend of tae poor, being always ready to administer to the wants of the needy. Being a very useful man kis loss will be keenly felt by the entire community. A very impressive funeral sermon. was delivered by Elder Peter Winebrenner, from Corinthians iv:11, 19. A large concourse of friends and relatives followed him to his last resting place. Peace to his ashes. April 22, 1878. NEW LEAF.
