Mr. Eagles says that he heard more talk about the politics of Noble county at the penitentiary than he has at home. Messrs. larrison and Alfred Skinner, brothers and farmers, living in Jefferson township, have failed with liabilities amounting teo about $15,000. It was generally supposed that financially they were sound. © Albion parties hold-the prineipal claims, who will be losers, as the assets will not be sufficient to-pay indebtedness. For some time past county treasurer Black has been’ suffering severely from a weak back, and on Saturday last, while working around a horse, it struck him on the back with its head, knocking him down. - It injured him 80 that he could not get up,and had to be carried to the house, since which time he has been confined to his room. A Man Deliberately Shoots Himself - Thrgugh the Heart. o Financial Embarrassment the Supposed Cause. -We learn that Mr. Willian Plank, who owns a farm in Swan, but who -was running a sawmill just over the line 1n Green township, committed suicide on last Friday by shooting “himself through the heart with a rifle. It seems that on that.day he had’ occasion to go to a neighbor’s house some ‘distance away, on/some business mat_ters, and suggested to his wife that he would take his gun with him, as he might possibly see some game to kill on the way there.. Not returning in a reasonable time, and some persons having called to see him, search was made, when his body was found cold in death. It seems that he had placed the muzzle of the gun against his breast and fired -it by touching the trigger with a stick which he had prepared for the purpose, the ball entering his breast and penetrating the heart. - Financial embarrassments are the supposed cause of his committing ‘the rash deed. His'body :was interred in the cemetery at Swan on Sunday last, Rev. A. Worth,of Albion, preaching the funeral discourse to a large and sympathetic audience. Blaine’s Latest Foolishness. | A statue of William King, who was the leader of the movement which separate the “District of Maine” from the commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the first Governor of the new State, was presented to the United States, in formal spseches by the Maine Senators, - Hamlin and Blaine, last Tuesday. = Mr. Blaine availed himself of the opportunity to make a venomous attack on Masachusetts, detailing with great unction the bitter detestation in which the “step-mother State” wag held by’ the Maine people, especially ‘during the war of 1812,— which they ardently supported, while the ‘leading men of Massachusetts ‘where advocates of peace and some of them engaged in the semi-treasonable intrigues connected with the Hartford eonvention. Blaine’s speech raised a terrible commotion in the Senate, of course; that is what it 1s intended for. Dawes and Hoar, the Massachusetts Senators, “went for” Blaine with enthusiastic vindictiveness, denouncing his career in the house in a style that excited the fervent gratitude of: the Democrats. It was an unusually interesting episode, and demonstrated very clearly, among other things, that, Blaine: remembers the Massachusetts votes for Bristow in the. Cincinnati convention. Thestatue will be placed in the Government curiosity shop,— with other stoneware of the same character. . .. ; :

~An immense audience, composed largely of sporting men and saloonkeepers, gathered at the First Baptist church, Fort Wayne, Sunday evening, Jan. 13, to witness the immersion of Manson Long, who has kept a faro bank in that city for the past twelve year, and was one of the most notorious gamblers in that'section of country. Several weeks since he closed his gambling room, and announced that he had ‘determined to reform. He will probably enter the ministry. Previous to the ceremony he made a very eloquent speech, which moved his listeners profoundly. He depicted his past life faithfully, and urged his old associates to follow his example. His sudden conversion has caused a profound sensation, for he has been the leader of the gambling fraternity in F't. Wayne for years past. ’

A wild animal that is the terror of all the dogs in the community,is roaming through the county and inhabiting the swamps a few miles south of Lagrange: It goes loping ncross the fields during the night, and every few jumps it sends forth a most unearthly shriek, that sends the cold chills over tihe form of the hearer. .These yells produce a sensation among the dogs and none can be indueced to follow it.
