.—Gov. Hendricks will address the people of this eounty at Kendallville, Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 24. Let Democrats all oyer the county give the necessary notice and turn out and come and hear their old Governor on the political questions of the day. Gov. Hendricks stands among the foremost statesmen of tlie Union, and it will richly repay our citizens for the time and trouble of coming to hear him. ' _Mr. Ramseyer’s traction engine broke down/on Tuesday evening, through no fault of the engine, but by the carelessness of the foreman of the shop where it was manufactured, who was sent here to make some repairs. Mr. Ramseyer says he has no fault to find with the engine, and that it works to his entire satisfaction. He also says there will bé an effort to have a meeting on the Hawpatch on Saturday of next week, when he will agree to take out all who want to go, and bring them back safe and sound. .—Billy Williams spoke (o a large audience in Kann’s Hall last evening. Hedelivered what has been extensively advertised as an “unanswerable speech” on the finance question. . For along time our curiosity has been excited to learn the character of his “unanswerable argument.” We are now familiar with it—and it is the same old story: Perversion, evasion, and demagoguery. From all the “pufling” that has been done in behalf of Billy, we were Jed to believe that he had made discoveries in the financial problem entirely beyond the reach of other mortals, but lo! now that we have heard 'his story, we find that it is a miere re-bash of what has been, said a thousand times by the agents of the Money Power, and as often refuted by the advocates of the people’s currency, Billy tells the people that he has devoted :six months to looking up his’ “facts,” and that they are gathered exclusively from the official records. —The: tewperance meoting on the street, last Saturday evening was well attended and exceedingly interesting. Quite a number signed the pledge: ~Owing to the busy season of the farming commun'ity,‘our streets, on Saturday last, were lacking somewhat in their usually animated appéarance on that day. 2 '
—The agricultural address to be delivered by Senator Voorhees at the Fair, on the afternoon of the 20th, will be quite an item of interest connected 'with the exhibition on that day. —Peaches are abundant throughout this part of the county. The trees are literally breaking down under the weight of the fruit. It is estimated that the later sort will not bring over 25 cents per bushel. ¢
—The generdl indications are that the ap;:»roaching'Euir will prove unusually interesting. Every effort is being made by the officers and directors to bring about this result and make it a grand success in every respect. It is with supreme gratification and delight that the annual “shaker” contemplates the closely approaching season of his ecstatic joy. lle will then be forcibly reminded of the fact that “man is a little lower than the angels.” D -
. —The temperance work at Albion is said to be progressing finely under: the persuasion of Mr, Hallenbeck.— They are signing there by the hundreds. Mr. Hallenbeck seems detem mined to make’it count wherever he may appear. ! '
—-Wanted—An expert mathematician to determine the extent and cost of those wonderful labyrinths of turnpike road that have been constructed in this locality the present summer.— The enormity of the task, however, is quite sufficient to stagger a Diocles. ~ —Some of our merchants state that they would favor a plan looking to the gradation of -butter in this market.— By all means let this measure be perfected, as it 18 not just that poor butter should bring as much as good.—‘Moreover, we would then have more 'good. v ’
~-It should beremembered that Senator Voorhees speaks here in the forenoon of the 20th. This arrangement is necessitated by reason of the fact that the races on the Fair ground come off in the afterneon. People at a distance should make it a point to start early. ; - . —*Rocksey Jane” firmly declines to be an independent candidate for Sheriff. He says he doesn't relish the idea of permanently disgracing himself by permitting his name to be used for so base a purpose.. He. entertains no doubt, however, as to his triumphant election, were he to accept, but considers the paltry income of $2,000 per annum an inadequate compensation for sald diggrace. T v omr i T

He says he is surprised at the very substantial improvements being made in our place; that there is more building, ete., being done here than in any other town of its size that he has visited during the last two years.
