Judicial ‘Circuit 'was agitated in the least, and ‘perhaps’ before Mr. Best’'had sighified ‘hid/ interition of resigning, we advo‘edted ‘just 'such a mevement as the ‘Penmoeérats 6f Noble ¢ounty have in‘dugurated by the action of their eon--vention on'’Friday (August 25th), and ‘we are’sorry to see that'the managers. ‘of-the'republican ‘party are so blinded by partisan strife to the best interests of the people of the district as' to put a partisan. candidate in ghe’fieid, and one: whose -only’ sapport’ will "come ‘from that party dlone. © The election of a judicial officer should not be dependent’ upon the suceess of this or that party. ‘as he is in no' sense; officially, an' exponent of party principles, and if nominated and elected by the péople independent of party considerations; it could then niot be charged that ‘his action upon-the bench was inflienced by a dispesition to reward his political friends, or to punish political enemies. ¢ G
' - Chief Justice' Wiite, of the United ‘States Supreme Court, evidently took ‘the. correct ‘view in the matter ot judicial officers becoming mixed up'in -the political wrangles whieh periodie-. ‘ally loccur in this icountry, wlen, in “his letter to a friend declining to liave +his name sed in connection with the républican nomination for chief magistrate of tlie nationyhe expressed the opinion that meémbers of thé'Supreme Court: 'shiould 'be entirely freed from iparty trammels, and that they should -be ‘made ‘inéligible to the ‘office’ of ‘President to prevent.them/from prositituting the positions they hold by imaking them:stepping stones to the Presidency. - : Vi i'The Circuit Judge of this. district, -will be brought in daily contact,in the discharge ot his offlcial duties, with men who are bitter partisans, and in his rulings and decisions in such cases, his: action could not! be questioned .were lie not dependent upon either of the parties fer the position he holds. All can see the necessity, then, of elewvating 'this office above those, which, ofe necessity, partake of a partisan character. Let the best men of both parties calmly consider the interests of; the people of the district, and aet as wisdom dnd sound judgment may dictate. /. The:demoeratic convention on Friday, Aug. 25, nominated Judge “Tousley. to the people:of this:Judicial ‘Circuit as a gentleman upon whom all could unite in-voting-for, and one who' is pre-eminently qualified to discharge the duties of the office, in all of Which we heartily coneur. The nominee of the Waterloo convention on Saturday last 4s':dpubtiess an exeellent man, and. perliaps fully qualified to discharge the duties of. the position, but by accepting the nomination: of a particular “party,” he becomes the politicul enemy of a large number of ‘the. voterssof the district, and will be compelled to engage in‘the political strife which preceedg;the election. ! . The Demoorats of the counties composing this Judicial District deserve ‘credit for the effort they made to elevate this -office above the politidal “cesspool of a partisan contest, and we believe tha&l‘a large number of the thinking.men of th¢ vepublicail party will join with them in their efforts in this direetion. No-‘one desires that a bitter partisanyand his political eneF‘_my, should sit in judgment upon caseés which-had their origin perhaps in tle jealousies: and. strite of ‘the ‘holitiedl contest by whieh he was ¢leeted, and therefore the n(ati%s'_;s‘ity of elevating Lhis office above all party controversies and-of making our-Eivenit-d udge thecandidate-of'the -whale people re- - ghidless of party Maes.
