Cory, of Syracuse, was ‘reported dangerously sick last week, ‘and while in that helpless condition his room was entered by burglars and his pants pockets riddled. In a note to the Enterprise, Mr. C. expresses the belief that it will be an easy matter to implicate the guilty parties. 2, ) —lt is the common belief that a warm winter is productive of much sickness. A learned writer in Hall's Journael of Health controverts this theory and proceeds to prove that during a warm winter there is much less sickness than when the weather is cold. There is a wide difference of opinion on this subject, and a majority of the people, including physicians, believe a cold winter to be productive of hetter health. ~ =« ¢ —At a recent meeting of the stockholders of the First National Bank of Auburn, the following officers were elected to serve for the ensuing six months: James V. Hazzard, Cashier; J.R. Lanning, President; J. I. Ford, S. W. Ralston, W. Mclntyre and Geo. Hazzard, Directors. A dividend of five per cent. was declared, one per cent. carried to capital fund and one per cent. to building banking house—a gain of seven per cent. in- the first six mofiths.” That is not a bad showing. =i : —The order recently issued from the general office of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern railroad makes a general reduction in the salaries of all employes, ,exc'ep:t agents and foremen of departments and gangs of men. All men receiving $1.25 will have their wages reduced ten per cent., and those who are paid by the day more. than $1.25 will receive thirteen cents less. All men working by the month will have $2.50 taken from their salaries, the change to date from the first of the present month. —At this season of the year most

The-temp-%tation to thievesiis very great, and persons ought to look well to the ‘proper security of their meat. “that thou causest not thy brother to stumble.” A contemporary suggests these timely precautions: “Make your dog kennel conveniently near the smokehouse, if you have a deg, and also keep your gun well loaded and capped, and if you catch a thief in the act, dou’t ask questions but bang away:at him.” —The Elkhart Observer announces that the Cincinnati, Wabash & Michigan railroad track -from Goshen to Marion is in a most excellent .condition, and the completion of the road through to lts terminus is but two or ‘three months off at. furthjest. The iron is down fo within four miles of" ‘Alexander, in Madison county, and before many days the cars will Qe running to.that point. There will then be but ten miles of a gap to fill; when a person can leave Goshen at noon and arrive in Indianapelis for supper. - - LI e s —ln Washington township,’ some five or six weeks,ago, a son was born to the wife of Adam Brossman which ,has five fingers and a thumb on each hand, and twelve toes. The surplus fingers appear to be on the side of the hand next to the “little” finger and are fully develbped. The extra toes are next to the “big” toe and are join--ed to the second, making it double to the nail. ;| We are informed that the child is otherwise well developed and is doing well. Would n’t it be propér to denominate this freak of nature a phalangial curiosity ?. : —The question is daily asked by hundreds of anxious persons: *What can be done. to relieve the present stringency in money matters?” If every man who is in debt would (and lie can) pay a part of his indebtedness, his creditors could pa}; their creditors, and so on down the scale. Don’t hold your money (the Wabash Free Trader. remarks) because times are hard, ‘but pay your debts, or a portion of them, and by. so doing enable others to do likewise. = One thousand dollars thus expended Wwould do much to digpel the present gloom. M. Starr, its present editor and senior partner, has been connected with the Téimes nearly half that period. - —The Supreme Court of this State has just rendered a decision to the effect that under the law of 1873, a person beaten, injured, etc., by a drunken man, has a right of action, and ean recover against the person wihci sold the liquor to the one committing the injury. : - ; —Albion has made arrangements for the issuing of 7 per cent. 20-year Bonds, to the amount of $17,000, to be applied to the ereGtion of a highschool building. = This movement indicates a commendable spirit of enterprise on part of the citizens of the “hub.” e : +<-The Warsaw Union of last week announces that, for the first time in the history of that city, a brick building was erected in mid-winter. C.M. Pierce, of that place, had just. completed’ a two-story brick building, which was commenced one week previous. ‘_ o L '—‘-The‘ Ligonier Dramatic Company have re-organized and are rehearsing a drama entitled “Shadows,” which they will be ready to present to the public in a féw-weeks. The piece'has never been rendered in this place and we trust they will be able to make it very interesting. ; )

—Less than two years ago the citizens of Goshen organized their first building, loan and savings association: The results have been so satisfactory that they have recently organized another (the Mechanics’) with a capital of .‘5100,000..' Some -of the very best business men of Goshen are connected with the new association. —ln an article -on “Personal Journalism,” the Goshen T'imes of last week’ uses this poir‘g'ed language: “When the editor of a paper uses his power to-defame and destroy the character of his neighbor, he may as well under- | stand. there are blows to reqeive as well as give. This kind of personal journalism is a foul nuisance and ought to be abated.” *© . _ —From the number of grunters seen perambulating our. streets every day; one would suppose that most of the citizens'here have forgotten that we have a town' ordinance prohibiting the running at large of swine unless their “snoots” have been deprived of the power of rooting. They are a nuisance in winter;as well as in sum-: mer. leep them up, or ring their sneots. : bty : 7 The Canada Southern. It will be a matter of great regret if the present manipulation of the Canada Southern Railroad by Vanderbiit, President of the Lake Shore and Miehigan Southern Railroad, results in the non-completion of the Canada Southern to Chicagp. It is said:that nobody knows Vanderbilt’s plans until they are in course of execution, and much that is written about his intentions .in-this- matter, i mere guess work. ' The theoty: that he has only bought the Ganada Southern in ovder to give him. two tracks from Toledo to Buffalo, and that the two lines of the L. 8. & M. 8. from Toledo to Elkhart, with a double track from Elkhart to Chicago ‘being sufficient for the business of the line, has so much apparent consistency as to occasion real apprehensions that during his time the Cunada Southern will never reach Chicago. It would be a great benefit to this county, could that road be 'built on the contemplated line. And we are not without hope it \vill be, even if Vanderbilt shakes 118 head. | Somefellows went into Abe Shank’s corn crfb and carried away. nearly a ‘wagon-load of corn. Mr. Shank owns a farm in the country hut lives in town. It se¢ms'one of the men who had helped to husk and erib the corn ‘was an accomplice in the stealing of it. Another man named Shank,_l;iying three or four miles from town, had his house searched by burglars one day last week. One of.the burglars was captured with some of the stolen property upon his person, and is now safely lodged (not very safely either) in the old jail. It is possible,. however, that he may secure _.yrooms /in the new jail soon, as it is about ready for the reception of guests. Mr. Kane and lady, with the assistr ance of the little children of this place, gave three costume concerts at Central Hall last week, to large a.nd appreciative audiences. ,sKane is a success as a costume concertist; or, in other words, he knows how to suit the public taste, * | : : There are to be a number of buildings erected -here next summer. = - .
