E. 11. Fisher) has been appointed to a clerkship in the Dead Letter Office at Washington. Mrs. Beebe is well qualJified fx(r the position, and being a good politician, she is of course entitled to a erumb from the bountiful tables of 1. S. Grant. Besides this, we rather like the idea of appointing ladies to positions in the Dead Letter Office— It affords a glorious opportunity for _gratifying that thing called c-u-r-io-s--i-t-y,of which all good daughters of Eve are-said to 'poséess’hiore or less! .

—Judging from the gleeful countenances of old and young members of the M. E. Sabbath School, a splendid time may be anticipated during Christmas. A large Christmas tree has Leen placed in position in the church, literally covered with innumerable presents for scholars and teachers. We are pleased to notice this tendency toward an old-fashioned observance: of this grandest of all holidays, and «;arnestlL hope that ere many years Christmds will here be commemorated with the same'devotional zeal that characterizes some of the christian nations of the old world. —What a mania certain of our citizens have for going ,dbwn town at night, and yet not attending to any particular business. / Most of those who are afflicted with this propensity actually waste the only period of leisure allotted to them between the close of the day’s labor and bed-time. They read nd books, and getting out of doors before the supper table is cleared away and the house tidied up, they have no social intercourse with their wives and children. Wé will not dwell on this waste of time and perversion of life. It only needs to be noted- to be deprecated: Surprise. your family. by spending one or two evenings with them, and in turn you will be surprised that you ever devoted the evening in such an aimless way as you have heretoforedone. Try it just once for instance. = i ;

- Last Friday William Myérs, a son of Mrs. Dr. Flowers, fourteen or fifteen years of age, accidentally shot himself. It appears, from what he says, that he had placed the gun under the portico, and when he went to get it, taking the gun by the muzzle and lifting it up to draw it toward him, it was in some way discharged, the contents entering his side just under his arm. He is now in a precarious situation,
