Thefarm and Honselwld. ____w"——“——_'_‘_—‘-—-_———‘————___—r—_-_____—_____: o Sedentray Habits. | Want of exercise is a cause prominent among many which favor the. produ?:— tion of disease. Sedentary habits when extreme, are sufficient in themselves to produce disease; dnd existing in a less degree, promote disease from other causes. Physical and mental labor should gohand in hand ; and the health and vigor of all thg‘ funetions of: both _ body and mind is best maintained by - their equal and moderate exercise; - consequently, the sluggish torpor of inactivity, renders them incapable of resisting disease. Fasten a man’s arm to his side, not tight enough to obstruct ‘L cireulation or produce pain, but sufficiently so as to prevent its use or motion, and ‘what is the result? Slowly . the limb begins to soften and becomes flabby in its muscular structure;in time there is an appreciable decrease in size; and when subjected to use, it is found to be weak and clumsy. = The other arm, continually in use and exercise, retains thesize, strength and vigor of health. Through the one, the blood circulates slowly and lazily, leaving but a part of the bailding up material or nutriment it bears ; the whole of which . in healthful activity, the tissues are calculated to assimilate. Throuth the other, subjected to exercise, the |life - giving eurrent courses freely. ‘The blood is invited to its most minute and ultimate arterial ramifications; there the flagging tissues seize upon the pabulum brought to them, and there_from are continually renewed in health and strength. Muscular function, and with' it, as a physiological sequence, the circulation of the blood, is the first to suffer from want of exercise; and consequently, comes sluggish movements and ultimately, weakness of the heart and other muscles. The balance or equilibrium of the circulation, is destroyed; parts farthest from the heart aré not supplied with. their normal quantity of blood, hence cold feet and hands, dry skin, congested liver, with its frequent concomitants, hemor- " rhoids, or piles, torpid bowels and indigestion. The heart itself, and organs near it, may become oppressed and in- - jured by the load of blood in them, especially in a plethoric or fleshy subject; hence palpitation, headachey, and dullness of the senses ‘generally. In « nervous persons convulsive affections may be induced by this inequality of the circulation. Respiration being little exercised, the, work of decarboniz_ingthe blood is imperfectly performed, / and falls more upon the liver; and « thus occurs bilious derangements and an accumulation of fat in the textures. From this combination of influences various disorders arise; of the digestive organs, constipation of the bowéls, gout, rheumatism, and diseases of the skin.—@. R. Reynolds, in Plymouth Democrat. e Judicions Investment in Agricultural Literature. The wisdom of circulating in Eu- . rope the Reports of the A%ricu}tural Department has been abundantly demonstrated. Congress authorized ~the publication of a large edition in the German, Seandinaviar and other languages of ' Continental Europe. The matter for this edition was specially prepared, consisting of a description of the agricultural and mineral ‘resources of the United States, the quality of available lands, and the products thereof, climate, ete. i The. copies have been distributed by our Consuls at the prinecipal portd. A Jarge number of copies in English were also distributed through --t}}e ru.ral districts .of Great Britain.| The knowledge of our country afforded by this publieation has given an immense impetus to emigration from TEurope. The number of emigrants arriving at the various Atlantic ports since %he Ist of January has been almost unprecedented, and the tide of hardy sons of toil flowing to this country will, it is thought, continue to be enoflmous. A letter was received recently at the Agricultural |, Department from the « American Consul at Belfast, Treland, in_ which he says that 3,300 of the tflower of the youth of that region had sailed for America during the month of April. The section of country around Belfast is- inhabited by the most intelligent and industrious of the Irish race, and such a people will be a great acquisition to any locality where they may settle. The Consul says that the determination of these people to come to this country was due, in a great measure, to the information obtained from the Agricultural Report. Such of the States as have had the forethougbt and enterprise to send agents to Europe have serived much advantage in being able to'direct the destination of parties of emigrants before their departure. " ° Rum Drinking, . ¢ Mr. A. P. Flogg, of Springfield, Mass., rgave a temperance. lecture recently, and abandoning the usual strain of prohibition advocates, had something readable to say upon the physical effects and facts of liquor drinking and the liquor trade. Eminent surgeons said they knew the brain of a liquor drinker as soon as they saw it, The blood loses its bright red color and becomes foul. When this foul blood is driven, into the brain it gorges the vessely and very often passes the brain | .Againgt the skull, leaving the man senseless and stupid. Finally the brain becomes hardened, as having been pickled by alcohot, and looks very much like a toper’s nose. Sometime the blood-vessels burst, leaving in the brain clots of blood which cauée sores, paralysis and deaths. 'Sometimes the alcohol oozes through the blood-vessels until it turns the brain to grease or : causes what is termed “fatty degeneration.” i ; . It is well known that the animal propensities lie nearest the base of the ‘brain, while the portions of the brain | that affect the moral and religious nature lie near the top of the skull.— - When the blood is right it reaches the " all parts of the brain, equally, but when it is elogged and foul, it damsup around the base of the brain, stimulating the animal nature, while the moral and ,fiig&ous,fa@}fies remain dormant. Thus intelligent men are transformed = into besotted, ferocious and unreasonable brutes, whom stupid - horror and ‘despair driyve {o the mad house and'thetoipb.. |/ (1 * 71
How to Burn Out Stumps, . No State has more trouble with stumps than Indiana. A hundred plans and machines have been . dcvised to get rid of them in the cheapest way.' A writer of the American . Agriculturist tells how the desired result may be accomplished ; in fact, he states , that he has cleared his premises of a great many big stumps, very cheaply and easily, in some instances even the larger roots being -burned far into the ground. His simple plan is to bore a two-inch auger: hole from the top of the stump to the bottom and connect this with another bored nearly parallel with the surface of the soil. - Fire is then placed at the lower point of the bore, is fed by the draft of air, and the stump is consumed, leaving a mere shell, which ean be readily knocked to pieces. y

Anexchangesays: “An economical lady in Oberlin, Ohio, recently engaged an old man—who has a wife and six children to support—to dig and fix her acre garden. The old man worked about a week, and on asking for his pay the ‘lady’ handed him a bundle which she said contained a valuable waterfall which he could: sell. He took the ‘fixin’ to a hair-dresser, and found to his chagrin that it was not worth a quarter, beingan old jute concern which had done long service. He declined to go back to the lady, as he said, ‘for she might poison him for the purpose of stealing his old boots.”
From the extreme lateness of the season, the Chicago 7'ribune anticipates that much less land will be planted in corn in Illinois and Jowa than usual; that the corn already in is in danger from frost, and that thereis every probability of there being a short crop, as those two States are the largest corngrowing States in the Union. .We believe that Ohio and Indiana willalso have much less area devoted to corn for the same reason. i
Toe dispensations of Providence, while always for the best, are very mysterious ‘and inscrutable to the human understanding. Thus, while Lincoln and Stanton, Seward, Chase, and Greeley have been removed from earth, Ben Butler, Cameron, Colfax, and Logan still abide with us in their usual health. There is in this diserimination a riddle, we fear, which cannever be solved.—Cincinnati Enquirer. =
A number of Massachusetts physicians of the “regular”school haye lately ventured to adopt homeopathi¢ prineiples and remedies in their practice. Tue Washington Star remarks that Chief-Justice Chase was the last of his line; that neither he nor his brothers left any male descendants, and that, therefore, his branch of the family name will become extinct.
