The Farm and Household. Ail s s sSR AR R, CONDUCTED BY JONATHAN SIMMONS, Domestic Economy, or the History of ! Thrifty and Unthriflty, About ¢ne year ago we gave the¢ readers of the BANNER, in-the “Agricultural Department,” two articles nuder the head of “Thrifty avd Unthrifty.” We again briug the same two gentlemen before our -readers, setting forth some of the causes leading to the success in the one case nnd the want of it in the other: ! There is agreat difference between men, in their ability to guin property; but a still greater difference in their power of using it to advantage. Two men may ac ‘quire the same amount of money, in a ‘given time; yei ore will bea poor man, while the other becomes rich. A chief and essential difference fo the management of - property, is, that one man spends only the interestof his money, while another spends the principal. : ! ; I know a farmer by the name of Thrifty, who manages bis affuirs in this manuver : He risca early in tire morning, looks to the condijtion of his house, barn, home, lot and stock—-sees that his cattle, horees and bogs.are fed ; exanvines the tools to see whether they are ail in good order for the workmen—takes care that breankfast is ready in good season, and begins work in the cool of the day. When in the field; e keeps steadily at work, though not so - . violently as to fatigue and exbaust the ~ “body—nor does Lie stop to tell or hear " long stories. When the labor of the day is pust, be takes refreshment, and-goes to rest at an early hour, In this manner he - earns spd gaius money. - i When Mr, Thrifty has acquired a little property, be-does not speud it or let it slip from him, wirhont use or benefit, He pays his taxes and ‘debts when due or . caHed for, so that he has no officer’s fees to pay, nor expenses of courts. He docs not frequent the saloons and drink up sll _-his earnings in liquor that does him o - goed. < .He puts his money to use, 'hat is, herbuys more land, or stock, or.lends his money at interest—in short, he makes bis - money produce some prafit or ncome. - These suvings and profits) though small ' by themselves, amount 1n 8 year to a con siderable sum, and in a f'lw years they swell to.an cstate. Thrifty “becomes a - wealthy farmer, with several hund red acres of Jaud, and a hundred hufd of cattle!, Very different is the management of Mr. Untbrifty : He lies in {wdrlilh’f lute hour - in the morning, then rises and goes to the hottle for a dium, or to the siloon for a | glass of bitters, Thus he spends ten conts. * betore break fast for a drar that-does Liim po-good, Ile "gets ais [breakfust lute, when he ought to be at work. | When he. supposes he is rendy to begin the work of . the day, he finds he has ndt the nccessary tools, or sonie of'them are put of order—a * plow-share must be sent half a mile to a “blacksmith to be mended | a tooth or two in a rake or thu‘hnud}uv “rf » hoe is broke, or alseythe or an ax 18 to| be ground.— Now he is in 8 great hurty, and bustles abeat to miake preparation for work-—and what is done in a harry |is il done-<-he loses a part of the duy in getting ready, and perhaps the time of bis workmen. At ten or eleven o'clock he isiready to go to work ; then conies a boy Yiu‘.n’. teils him ti:e sheep have e caped frim the pasture, or thie cows have got amonpe the corn, or the hogs into the gardeny Ile frets and storms and rans to driye them out, Ilere, a halt boar or more tiigm I 8 lestin driving the eattle fom mischief agd repairing an old, broken fence—a fende that answers no purpose but to lall hifn into security and tesch bis horses and gattle to be unruly. Aftter all this bustle, the fatigue of which is worse than comthon labor, Un thrifty is rcady to begin (bis day’s work | at twelve o'clock. Thus half bis time is lost in supplying defects,| which proceed 1 from want of foresight. and good manage, | * ment. His small erops are damaged or destroyed by unruly cattle. His barn is open and leaky, and whap little le gathers is injured by the min gnd enow. . His house is in a’like conditign—theshingles fall off and letin the watpr, which causes’ the timber, floors and fufiniture to decay, and, being exposed. to the inclemency of the wheatber, bis wife apd children fall sick—their time/is logt, gnd the mischiet -closes with a ruinous traih of expensges for medicines and physiciang) After-drag ging out some years of [disappointment, " misery and poverty, the latvyer and the shyriff sweep awny the schoty remains of hig estate. This is the history of Mr, Un thififty-—his principdl isspent, Lé has no interest. Sw L . Not unlike this is: thg history’ of the Grog drinker. This man|wobders why be does not thrive in the wdrld; he cannot See why bis neighbor Temperance should be more prosperous than | himself, but in truth he makes no culeulations Ten cents a day for grog is a smalljsum, he thinks, which can burt-no man. | But let us make an estimute-—-Arithmetic s very uscfal for a man who veutures to spend smull sums every day. Ten cents a ¢lay amount in & year to thirty six dollars and a balf, which is no small sum tor a farfuer or mechanic, But in ten years this sum jamounts to three hundred and sixty five dpllars, beside in‘terest in the mean time, [What an amount is this for drams and bitfers in ten years! It is money emough to build a small bouse. But look at the amount for thirty years—ove thousand and nivetyl five dollars! A vast sam to run down oye man’s throat ! a sum that will buy a fyrm sufficient to maintain a small family. | Suppose & fam ily consume twenty five [cents’ worth of liquor per day. Tue ampunt of thisin a ~ year is ninety one dollard and a quarter; in tec years, to nine hundlred and twelve dollars and a half, and ip thirty years, to. two thousand seven hundred and: thirtyseven dollars and & half] A great esht,e may thus be consumed injrum. What misshief is done by the love|of spirituons liquors! : | © But, says the laborer [or the traveler spirituous liquors warm the stomach, and ~ are very usetal in cold weather.”—No, this is not correct. Sgitits enliven the feelings for balf an houf, but leave the body more lai%“guid' and cold than it was before. A man will freeze the soon” er for drinking spirits pf any kind. If 8 man wishes to guard hgainst cold; let - him eat a biscuit, a bit of bread, or a meal of victuals. Four|ounces’ of bread will give a more durable warmth to the “body than a gallon of dpirits, Food is the natural stimulant of exciting power of the human body ; it gives warmth andstrength, and does not leave the hody, as Bpirits does, more feeblg and languid.— The practice of drinkipg spirits gives a man red eyes, a 8 bloated face and an empty purse, It injures theliver, produces dropey, occasions a trembling of the joints.an?l - limbs, and closes life with a slow deicay of palsy. This is & short history Of the. drninker of distilled spirits. If a few drinking men are found|to be exceptions to this account, still the remarkaare true, a 8 they apply to most dases. Spirituons ‘liquors shorten more liges than famine, pestilence and the sword. = . & - } ‘The aetion of the State Board of Agriculture, recommending the pascage of a law to prevent cattle [from running at lnrge, will excite discugsion among the farmers, In those States where it hag been tried the law has been found to ~ work’ ‘well, the theory being that it is cheaper and better on _efery account for each man to fence il his own stock,. than to compel the rest|of the world to festddag, v e w 4 A faimer in Clay |county, Indisba, - #lipped Lis neck in the noose last week for the sixth time. Why is this? Tt is beeause farmers are not as iutelligeut as they should be, sud for this reasoh many think their own cali ing an inférior oue, and look up to others;/ this is all wrong, and unwoithy ot the great interest they représent, : We do pot blame lawyers apd doctors for occupying the high positionsof gavern. i ment, but the legislation of the country ‘i proves that the interests of the farmer and mechanic, and all classes of Inbor has been veglected. o : ‘ If bLowest farmers had been in our halls of Congress in sufficient numbers, | 300,000,000 acres of the public lands would not now be in the habds of raiiroads and land speculators. ' As an abstract: proposition, no man should purchase what he eannot afford to pay. for; and the retail tradesman should not permit himeelf to believe that lie has the right to give credit, to any one. But the very [reverse is the euse. The. merchant ’givm ]u‘nz;‘cre«git with, in many in gtances, no assurance 'that he will ever re: ceive his pay, and the purchaser cats a dash upon the merchandise which be ean not say is his own, and cultivates a 'distaste to the pnyment of his cash for what he buys, until e comes to believe that bis resources are great, and ruin stares ‘him and his merchant bothin the face be: fore lie has time to even dream of such a result, - ae i ~“Bankraptey begios in the parlor,” and the reason is obyious, « The dispositionon the part of humanity is to ape the manvers, customs and habits of those oceupying a more roval station in life, and furni ture, and dress, and the luxuries of life are accessible, if the “ape” is permitted to extend his credit beyond his ablity to pay, | and his extravagance is indulged unti! it results in o general sash, which is a serious injury to the merchant in the loss which he necessarily sustains, and to the debtor, because he can no.longerenjay his high life, with his credit gone, and the ability to secure. even the necessaries of life taken away from him.— £r. ; e ] P—— i The Owen County Journal says: “Sam--uel B.
