b TeR e SR SR SR T S gPst o The Farm and Household. CONDUCTED BY JONATHAN SIMMONS, m The Practical Farmer, ¢ ‘The man who makes agricuiturc a sciventific study considered Ly many as one who is not, or cannot be a practical far‘mer. Practical farming, with such men, often consists in manuring lightly with barnyard litter —not manure — which must be in the ground months before it can become sufficiently rotten to serve as food for the growing crops, in sowing the seed, and in cultivating and harvesting the crops. From observation they have: found that labor performed in a certain 'way will bring about a result of some kind, and so their labor is performed mechanically only, because it will pro- " duce a result which they hepe will be . profitable. { We have & neighbor living on a farm - of fifty acres, who hires one hand for a few months during the year. He raises but little, and as he is in debt. for all his roperty, can scarcely pay his interest. fie cannot see the profit in buying fertil- ' izers, besides he has no. money to buy with. . He hag not learned that the addition of manure to the soil will not only increase the necessary elements for plant growth, but will improve its mechanical condition, while theviincrcased ‘amount of vegetation will draw more largely from the ‘atmosphere, thus paying a large interest - upon the investment, and conse- . quently making the profits ot farming " greater. Yet this man calls himself a practical farmer, | - We have another one who ownsa farm of 150 acres. He started a poor man, but by unceasing labor, by economy in all. expenses on the farm and in the family, by requiring an excedsive amount of a bor from his employees, by concentrating all- his time and energies upon the ac complishment of ends that were principally, if not wholly for his own pecu niary interest —he has succeeded in increasing his property, and is what the world calls a successful man. His knowledge of the value of manures is sufficient to lead him to use them libérally, though he knows nothing of their chemistry, and acknowledges he can find no time for reading. His stoek is well kept; his erops generally fair, He is n practical ’ farmer. : * Of the two, the latter is the more prac tical, because he better understands the necessity of feeding the.-soil; but though he may bave been economical in all other respects, he has not been so in the use of manures, and it is here that the scientifie farmer becomes more practical than he. The ope may apply to the soil, for the production of a certain crop, a mannre rich in potash while the deficiency was ~only in lime; the other, having studied the constituents of plants and manures, knows what particular elements particu- . lar plants most need, and supplies those elements in such fertilizers ‘as are best ‘adapted for the purposc. - The one may ' plant his crop in such'succession as to al most exhaust the soil of an essential ele ment ; while the other by his knowledge, is enabled to arrange them in such orter asto draw all the ingredients in due pro. portion, 'The last named studies the natare and babits of plants. He is convinced that the delicate spongy mouths of the roots " can absorb nothing that is not at flrst dis solved, and that no manure can be dis: solved until thoroughly rotted. = With him, tilling the soil is not working in dirt. It is the science of depositing the Nature’s great receptacle—the earth—certain elements in certain proportions and under certain circumstances, so that she may bring them into the form neces- _ sary for the sustenance of animal life. It is science of allowing nothing to interfere - With or deter her operations from the be ‘ginning until the completion of her work, from the germination of the seed until / the maturity of the plant. Such is the office of a.practical tarmer, and as the one wl‘o has most studied the science of - agriculture, is best acquainted with nature’s laws and working, the truly scientific farmer must be the practical farmer. .+ Teething in Young Horses. At this season of the year, many young horses are weak and ill thriven from cayses connected fvith teething. The mouth is sore and hot, the gums are swollen and tender, the ridged palate becomes so much congested and enlarged that it comes below the level of the teeth, and is ~painfully bruised when ths animal at. tempts to chew his ordinary hard food. From the difficulty and paimn attendant on feeding, the animal does not take suffi- - tient nutriment, and strength and condition accordingly fail. This tumid, tender state of the mouth is technically known as lampas. In older books of far [riery it is described as an abnormal - growth; in popular estimation 1t is still looked upon as a disease ; in reality it is nothing more than a natural condition of the gums and adjacent parts, common in young teethmg animals of all sorts. The development and eruption of the teeth demand a large’supply of blood and nervous . influence; as oceurs. in the growth and rapid repair of other text~ ures, adjacent soft parts oecome turgid with blood. [ . . These considerations will indicate the absurdity of the old'fashioned treatment of lampas. The only rational treatment - which these cases of so called lampas really require, consists in the careful lan, cing or cutting with a s?mrp knife of the palate, if it is so much swollen as to in. ‘terfere with -mastication. The cutting or lancing does not require to be deep or repeated ; the discharge ot a very litsle | blood, as in the lancing of .a child’s hot, - swollen gum, suffices to relieve the con- . zestion and tenderrxes‘s of the colt’s mouth. . Any of the sucking teeth which have got misplaced, and lsip.pear to prevent the eruption of their permanent successors, should be - removed- with the fingers, or with & pair of pliers. While the gums are tender, and the teeth, both-in front .~ and behind, are irregular, it is very im- ¢ portant that the young horses should ' have their food supplied to them in a soft and easily masticated condition. It is desirable that the oats or other grain be given bruised ; that the bulk ot the fodder be cat or softened by soaking or steeping, and thaz well prepared mashes and cut roots be given more freely and frequently than usual. Horse owners should notice from time to time the state of the mouth and teeth of their. horses, - and by soft and digestible food, Jighter labor, and the lancing of the swollen gums, where that is required, they greatly mitigate the pain and prevent the untoward results of teething, . [
How Often Should Cows be Milked ? The following from the Irisk Farmers Gagetts is worthy of consideration : Regularity in the milking of cows is of as much importance as regularity in feeding them. In a state of nature the cow is relieved of its milk a great many times each day. A calf allowed to remain with its mother will help itself seven or eiil::. times a day. Under such' circumstances, 'the udder of the cow will remain small, and if allowed to retain the milk secreted during twelve hours, fever. ish symptoms are likely to be produced. The practice of mijlking cows more than twice in the twenty-four houre causes the capacity of the udder to be greatly increased and probably helps in maintaining the lactesl secretion long after pregnancy has taken place. - When,-how ever, by an artificial syetem, the cow has been enabled to retain her milk without | inconyenience for twelve hours or 80, she ought to be milked r%ularfly every day % the same hour, When the time for milking arrives, the udder usually becomes distended to its utmost capacity, and if it be not s{)eedily removed the animal suffers considerable pain, Cages of fever, the result of allowing animals to
remain too - long unmilked, are by no means of unfrequent occurrence. It is es. pecially necessary to attend to this point for some days after the animal has brought forth its young, for during that period very little irritation of the lacteal ‘organs is likely to bring on that most fatal of maladies, puerperal fever. If milking be too long delayed, nature will try to help the poor animal. An absorption of milk into the blood will to some extent take place, and that which remains in the udder will become detériorated. When neglect to milk a cow at the regular time is repeated several times, the secretion of the fluid is permanently checked, and there are many cases where by sueh neglect an animal has become dry in less than a month. ; Remedy for Bots in Horses, The Practical Farmer contains the following remiedy for bots: “Fill an ordinary )Eank bottle half full of molasses; then fill th swéet milk ; shake the contents and drench; follow the above in about an hour with a bottle of strong sage tea made of our ordinary garden sage; next day give that horse a feed of rough ric, and the dead bots will be ejected with the rice. My theory is that the milk and molasses being sweeter than blood, the bots turn loose to eat it, The sage tea will kill them,” and «it is the only thing I ever heard that will do it without injury to the horse. The rice will dislodge the bots better than salts; in fact, if you will ‘give horses a feed of rough rice every two weeks, I do not think there is'the least davger from bots ; at least such is my experience. As a proot of what I bave written, get two sage leaves, dip them in hot water; lay one down, and put a live _bot on it; then cover him with the other, he will die instantly. Sage tea I have also found very beneficial in colic; it is periectly harmless, if it does no gnod.’z ; A TERRIRLE disease has broken out in parts of the South among the hogs.! It hag but little resemblance to the hog cliol era, and i much more fatdl, never failing to kill in & few hours, and the hogsiactually become very offensive even before death. Its first” symptom is soreness of the the noge, followed frequently |by bleeding.. Then the tongue commences to swell, protrudes from the mouth and turns black, and the hog dies frequently in an houror less timeafter being attacked. No remedy has been discovered that] affects it in the least. - ot i e e, GR o e e e i ' Fire Wood. - There 13 a question which is just now of more pressing, vital importance than civil service refornd, Mr. Boutwell’s fipancial policy, or even the editorship of|the N. Y. 7ribune— the question of IFire Wood. What kind of fuel is the best and cheapest, and how can we best secure it ¥ ‘Tbese are practical inq’uiries-—-iucju‘}ries which come directly home to us, and touch us where we live. An. exchdnge lying before us, in discussing the “fiomv parative value of different kinds of wood for fuel,” says that taking shell bark hickory as the highest standard of our forest trees, and calling it 100, other treesiwill compare with.it for real value for fuel, as } tollows: s P - Shell-bark Hickory, 100 Yellow Oak, .60 Pignut Hick0ry,......95 Ilard Maple,.... J... 59 White Oak, ..., -\, .. 84 ‘White Flm, ........68 White Ash, ..;. .00 RedCedar,...!..J... 58 Dog-w00d,.... .. & ....76 Wild Cherry, ...J.. .5 Serpb 0ak,........ .[..18 Xellow Pine,........51 White Hazel,.... ...;..72 Che5tnut,............52 Apgle Pree, ,i......)..40 ¥eéllow Poplar, . ;. .52 Red Oalr,: .co..cc -0 080 Dutternat, ... .1 .51 White Beech, . . -65 Whiteßirch, ..| .43 "Black Walnut, . . 63 White Pine, -+l. 40 Blaek Bitch, . . (02 | . The above table, we presunie, will be instantly assailed by most of "our pepple. It will be noted that hard maple, which -8 regarded by most of our city folks as the choicest timber for fuel, is put|low down on the list,—below all the oaks, be low ash; beech. and. walnut. You can never make La Porteans agree to that; and the idea that White Oak is about 80 per cent. more valuable than hard ‘maple, - will etrike them as preposterous. . ‘lndeed, the latter is the favorite timber here; hickory, while throwing out an intenser heat, being ‘very hard en the metal of stoves. . But the truth is, the value of wood for fuel depends upon several conditions, aside from the tree out of which 1t is taken. It is a well known fact that there is a very considerable-difference in woods of the same species, according to the manner and the soil on which they grow. A maple that matures slowly on an upland pasture, standing alone or_apart from other trees, will last much longer. and give out a greater degree of heat, than one nurtured in & swamp, or in the midst of a dense forest. A tree that shoots up. in a forest, or on wet, low, rich ground, will be less solid, and less durable for fuel, and conseéquently less valuable, than a tree of the same kind grown on a dry and poorer soil. Then again, the yuality of the wood of the same tree, is greatly modified by the age of the trees. Seasoned White Oak saplings (*second quality,” for instance) are about as gocd for fuel as any timber this country affords; but the aged White Oak, which is porous and brittle, and breaks like ice un der the ax, is very poor, especially the limbs. The younger the growth, the closer and denser the fibre, and the better for your use if you wanta hot, steady, tenacious fire. And this suggests that, lastly, the value of wood also depends vpon the purpose for which you desire it. There are two distinct stages.in the burning of wood. In the first, the heat given off arisea chiefly from the flame. In the second, it arises from the live and reds hot coals. In mild or warm weather, the soft woods—the - pines, poplars, bass woods—are preferable, as they are active in the first stages, kindle easily, burn with a quick, large flame, leave but little coal and go out promptly —just as a ‘fire ought to behave in Summer. But in Winter we want the hard, heavy timber which, with slower combustion and less, flame, yields large beds of glowing longliving coals. - ! ; ~ Of course it is understood that, other things being equal, dry wosd is always to bq,e;‘eferred to green.— LaPorte Herald. i ————— JupeE Test, of the Indianapolis crim - inal court recently fined and imprisoned a colored man for marrying «a white wos man, and ‘an eftort is now being made to have the law repealed under which the negro was convicted. - :
