i ickcaitn A iy #epon of the Department of Ag 1-4‘ ‘ - - ecultmre, | | LWe gather the following agricultural items from the report of the Commissidn--3‘ of Agricultvre for the months of Noember and December: _ i The ave:age yield of corn per acre, list ear, was: lowa, 40.8 bushels; Illin is,| 9.6; lodiana, 398, and Ohio, 395; ‘gennsylvania and Nebraska, 39 busbels; New Jersey, 89 5; New York, 375. T¢xas u}:’ukes the bighest Southern averajze, 8.5! : L ' ? ‘The highest wheat returns are frpm innesota, California and Texas; (he owest, South Carolina, the range being rom 6.4 to 18.7 bushels per acre. i | The highest average for oats is 40 bushels for Nebraska; the lowest {s 8 “Tbushels for South Carolina. . 1 Average for hay range from 710 ¢[ a {ton in Maryland to 1-45 tons in Illinois. ~ Prices of cereals rule comparatiyely low, corn especially, bearing prices that can scarcely repay the expense of cujitivation in many of the Western Std‘es. | Where fuel is scarce and dear, thejold practice of burning corn has been reviyed. In some instances it has been economical ly used in manufactories, There isa wide | range of prices in the several countids in | & State, those upon through lines of rail- | roads showing higher rates; but wider | differences 'are caused by disparities be ' sween local supply and demand. Thergare new counties in frontier. regions, with | small production and incieasing popula- | tion from immigration, in which prices - are almost as high as in eastern cities. | Averaging the local prices of corn, the lowest is 18 cents per bushel in Nebgaska and lowa, while that of Kansas is 23 and Illinois 4. Going eastward it rises to 29 in Indiana, 34 in Ohin, 60 in Pennsjylva: nia,and 62 in New Jergey. The range in New England is from 84 in Vermont to 95 in New Hampshire. The avgrage for New York .is 70 cents. One bushel
of corn in Massachusetts appears [to be worth five in lowa. In the Sotith the rate is highest in Florida at $1.20 per ‘bushel, and lowest in Texas at 48 pents. The price increases- from Deleware to South Carolina, the rates being in their order, respectively, 55, 57, 58, 62, and 66 cents; in Alabama 78, Georgia, 86, and 88 in Missiseippi and Louisiana. ' The averages of wheat range between $1 95 in Massachusetts'and 74 cdnts in Oregon, the next lower being, respective ly, 78 cents for Nebraska, 83 for Minne* sota, and 85 for lowa. The crop|being poor in Kansas and Missouri, local [prices aversge in those States, respectively, $1.42 and $1.41, about the samé asin Tennessee and West Virginia. i The returns point to a decrease of s.per cent. in the potato crop from the product of last year, amounting to about six mil: lions of bushels. The Western States, in which tbis crop has suffered for peveral years from the ravagesof the Cqlorado beetle, report diminishing losses from this cause, and are the only States,| North Carolina and Texas excepted, reporting increased production, L
| e— s Winter-Fattening Sheep. ! In commenting on this subject, Jhe,Ru- ‘ ral Press remarks: 0 The feeder takes in hand a flock of sheep in medium condition, and the problem for himto selve is, how to put them in condition for the market during the latter part of winter, or in the fore part of the spring. This we believe jhe can accomplish with the best ccom“my by feeding them high during the tvfi) latter autumn months, and then carrying them along on medium feed during t-hfrest of | the time he keeps them, v ' Every farmer who has handled this class of stock ought to know thit there is a great difference in the cost of] fatten: ing sheep which are put in winten quart - ers in low condition, in comparison with those which go into the yards %n good order. If a sheep has been losihg flesh daring the latter part of the iaF, it requires congiderable effort to tuprp. him round when cold weather sets in,land set him on the road to a good market; good shelter must be had, and an abundance of the most nutricious food. On the other hand, if be has been steadily gaining during thie same period, it requir¢s much less food through the winter to pnut him in good wmarketable condition| in the spring. : | This fact is so well understood by ekilltul feeders that they refusp to buy stock sheep which are in low condition in the early part of winter. . They deem it better to buy flesh and fat than to put it on a poor carcass in cold weather. In vie\Tv of these facts, it is ecoucmy to begin feeding grain to wethers as soon as the first of October. If the pastures are good, 'so much the better, but feed grain nevertheless, The rate at which the sheep will fatten will be quite satisfactory. The feed need not be heayy, bat it will be found, if the scales are triad, that more weight will be gained from a bush el of corn, fed in the fall on grass, than if fed in the winter in the yards, and in conjunction with hay and straw; . A supply of salt should be k¢pt in the -~ pasture in a covered trough, so |that the sheep can have access to it at all times ; and, of course, there should be | abund - ance -of good water. Corn cq4n be fed very conveniently in the ear, cracking it in pieces, and scattering it on tHe ground in a dry place, or it may be shelled and fed 1 troughs. The feeding places should be changed frequently, sp as to be sweet, and the poorer pastures of the field should be selected for this purppse.
To Make Great Laying #ens. It is claimed that there is as much advantage gained in paying strict attention in selecting hens with prolific tendencies from any breed, as in selecting good milk: ers to. improve the dairy stock} and the hypothesis—perkiaps establishe& fact—is one that stands to reason. Ever}zone who keeps fowls is well aware certain ones are greater egg producers than|others of .the flock, au§ the eggs of only snch as - these should be saved for the ;erpose-of .increase. ‘ . " One writer Von this subject says that he .is perfectly certain that the dumber of .two hundred eggs per annum hay be attained in a few years' time with perfect ease should the object be sysbimatically sought. Itisa matter within the reach of all who feel interested in it, and one that can be easily tested, without any knowledge whatever as to fancy points. If the poultry flock of & farmer can be made to produce double the eggs usually obtained from{a certain number of hens, the improvement will be-a paying one.
Churning, Hs During the process of churning a certain uniformity ot temperature must be observed, or the butter will be [soft and spongy instead of being firm and compact. The agitation, also, of the cream must be regular, neither too quidk nor too slow. If the sgitation be too quick the butter will make and unmake itself before the churner is aware of iit, as too rapid motion induaces fermentation, which, when it has reached a certain point,is entirely destructive of anything like the possibility of making even mjoderately good or well tasting butter. [Ff, on the other hand, the motion be too islow, the agitators in the churn fail to produce the desired separation of the component i;:artl of the cream, and the consequence , that after a good deal of time epent in laly action the churner is tj)m;@ ag tar from his butter as he was at the be nning of his labors, The best temperature for the oream in churning is from fifty to sixty degrees. e Mussrs, LockriDGE & Bfiibfikfl,» of Greencastle, recently sold a lot of short~ horn steers at 8 cents per pound: Anothot argoment in favor of pure bred. | it i ‘ I
"“"——'—"‘——-—-—"‘—'—_"—‘—"—"‘—r“‘_—'——_——_—"' THE WHITEWASH OF OgAKES AMES, It is impossible to contfive anything weaker than this testimony of Oakes Ames | before the Congressional fnvestiga“fing Committee in reference to lzlis distribution —that is, the use of the rP(f.cific Railroad Credit Mobilier stock—amang members of Congress. He says he befin by soliciting - his intimate friends and men in-Congress })ossessed of means, and| capitalists inarge cities, to take stock. | He don’t state that he had the leastidea tfimt there would be any impropriety in members of Congress being interested in railroad stock, which their action could|enhance or diminish in value a 8 they pleased, The members whom he wished‘ to purchase he now says ‘‘ wére members of means,” but, unfortunately he, in his letter to MecComb, .of January 30, 1868, he stated they were poor. He says he had 250 shares to distribute, and that he strove to use them in such a way as to ‘ spread our influence everywhere.” What influence could it be except official favor and votes for the road ? He tells us that Vice Presi-
dent Colfax ‘‘wanted'some stock; that he paid for it, though it was never transferred to him, nor does he remember . ever ‘having paid him any dividends.” If it was paid for, why was it not transferred on ‘the books? Why were no transfers made in any ease? 1S there any reason than ‘that the members knew, and Ames knew, that it was illegitimate transaction? The account that he gives of Senator Wilson’s ( now Vice President elect ) connection with it is amusing. He says : : “There was a fund given Mrs. Wilson the twenty-fifth anniversary of her wedding, and I was consulted about investing it. I recommended twenty shares of this stock for $2,000 and the money was paid to -me some months afterward. She objected to the investment, and I felt bound, from what hadioceurred, to take it off her hands and return the money, which I did. Patterson, of New Hampshire, agreed to buy thirty shares of stock, and received dividends upon it, but the stock was neyer trar, lsferred to him, although he paid for it.’
What a clever fellow Mr. Ames was, to be sure, to take unsatisfactory money ventures off the hands of his friends! We rather guess that sort of kindness was confined to the members of Congress. He likewise advised. Dawes to buy the stock. He would guarantee him ten per cent., and also re-purchase it any time he wanted it dane. . J The fmost remarkable evidence of kindness was in the case of Kelley, of Penn_sylvania. In regardto him we must quote Ames’ own words: “I recommended him to buy, and he said he would like to, but said he had not the money to spare;to pay for it. He never took stock. My recollection is very indistinet as to this case of his. I made a loan to him of $l,OOO, I think, which he has never settled. He regards the stock as belonging to me. It being a transaction of long standing and of small amount to me, I have never given it special tho’t.” Isl't that a very business way of doing things? So great were Mr. Ames’ enterprises that such little things as a loan of %1,000 to a brother mmeber he can hardly recollcet. He took Scofield’s stock back, after he had it awhile. The new/Senator (Allison) of Towa, and Mr. Wilson of the same State, took ten shares each from the great distributor. . Now, in the light of these very poor efforts at whitewashing himself and others, we ask attention to the following letters, which he wrote four years ago, and which expese, without gloss, the whole transaction : 5
<“WASHINGTON, Jan, 25, 1868. “H. S. McComs, Esq..— Decar Sir: Yours of the 23d is at hand, in which you say Senators Bayard and Fowler have written you in relation te their stock. I have spoken to Fowler, but not t§ Bayard, but will see him soon. You say I must. not put too much in one locality. = I'have assigned, so far as I have done, four for or (from Massachusetts, one for or from New Hampshire, one Delaware, one Tennessee, one Ohio, two Pennsylvania, one Indiana, one Maine, and I have three to place, which I shall .put where they will domost good to us.” I am here on the spot, and can better judge where tliey should go. I think after this dividend is paid we should make our capital $4,000,000, and distribute the new stock where it will protect us. Let them have the stock at par and profits made in the future. The fifty per cent, increase on the olestock I want for distribution here. Wd. allow Durant to. place $58,000 to some three or four of his friends, or keep it himself. [ have used this where it will produce the most good for us, I think. In view of King’s letter and Washburn’s amove here, I go in for making our bond ‘dividend in full. We can do it with perfect safety. I understand the opposition to it comes from Alley. He is on the Finance Commiittee, and can raise money easy if we come short, which I don’t believe we shall ; and if we do, we can loan our bonds toe the Company, or loan them the money we get from the bonds. The contract calls for the division, and I say have it. When shall I see you in Wash- | ington ? Yours, traly, | : : ““OARES AMES.”
‘“WASHINGTON, January 30, 1868. “H. S. McComß—Dear Sir: Yours of the 28th is at hand, inclosing a letter from, or rather to Mr. King. - I den’t fear any investigation here; what some of-Durant’s friends may do in New York Courts can’t be counted on with any certainty. You do not understand, by your letter, what I have done and am to do with my sale of stocks. You say more to New York. I have placed some with New York, or haye agreed to. You must remember thatit was nearly all placed as you saw, on the list in New York, and there was but six or eight M for me to place. I could not give all the world they wanted or they might want; and of that you would not want me to offer less than one thousand M to any one. Allfly is opposed to the division of the bonds, says we will need them, ete. I should think that we ought to be able to spare them, with Alley and Cisco as the Finance Committee. We used to be able to borrow when we had no credit and debts increasing. We are now out of debt and in geod credit. - What say you of the bond dividend? A partof the purchasers here are poor, and want their bonds to sell to enable them to meet their payment on the stock in the C. M, I haye told them what they could get as dividend, and theg expect it.. 1 think where the bonds the- parties receive are ‘the eighty per cent. dividend, we better give them the bonds; it will not amount to any thing with us. Seme of the large holders will not care” whether they have the bonds or certificates, or they will lend their bonds to the Company, as they have done before, or lend the money. Quigley has been here, and we have I§Ot that one and one-tenth that was Underwood’s. I have taken half, Quigley one-fourth, and you one-fourth, J. Carter wants a part of it; - at some future day we are to send a part to him, Yeurs truly, : | i “OARES AMES,”
