5 Lessons on Single Crops, : If anything could teach the impolicy of depending largely on one crop, the cel ebrated potato disease in Ireland, some twenty flve years ago, ought to be that lesson. Here we find people whp had staked their existence on one crop, the potato, and when that failed them| they were left dependent on the world’s [cbarity; and notably that of the United States. They were exactly in the position which those who clamor for free trade would have this country. All they raised went tothe Ebglish market, and the English manufacturers sent back to them all their clothing, and nearly everything| they used. When their potatoes failed they bad pothing to buy with, and England lost a.cgstomer. - She.was, howevet, pre‘pared to sell. She did not want fo buy anything but food enough to-supply ber manufacturing population, which her own soil wag unable to do. It is, therefore, her interest, if possible, to keep|down manufactures here, to make our people buy all their goods there, and to kgep us at the one thing—raising food for ber ‘mechuanics, a 8 Ireland of old did. | If all men - were politically brothers, it might not make so much difference; but junfortunately for this it 18 of no consequence to us what the interests of other countries are. Our interests are not the interests of England, and what is good policy for hem is not for us. It should be gur efifort not to make our country dep¢nd on any other country for the things we can in any possible way raise for ourselves. We have been Jled into these rémarks because what is true as a unation is true‘of an indiyidual. The greater the yariety we can raige, the greater is the chance of our doing well. If we pin ourselves down to one thing, we may find ourselves in the condition of Treland with her po tatoes, and one bad rot willspail gll -our prospects. India suffered once térribly through. growing nothing but ri¢e, and the Bouth from cotton. Mixed industries and mixed crops—these are our policies.

] ' g ¢ When to Apply Fertilizers, Prof. Voelcker, of the English| Royal Agricultural Society, reports as follows on recent experiments: | A considerable percentage of thejnitrate of soda was carried off in the drainage, ~ when applied as a fertilizer. - The poil did not retain the whole of the salt, nar of the assimilable nitrogen. Being readjly dissolved in the soil, it should not be pplied till late in the spring, according to the climate and season. The sulphate|of am: monia stays in the grourd better than the nitrate of soda, and should be sdwn two weeks earlier. Potash salt and|soluble phosphates at the same time. All stable and yard manure is best applied in the fall or winter. Lime, marl, and ypsum may be applied in January, Februpry, and ‘March—the earlier the better, | Mr. J. B. Lawes, of England, hhs.a plct © of experimental meadows that has had | fourteen tons of stable manure ev ry since 1843. Plants grown on this surfhce have @ absorbed all the rain- water, so that little or none has been discharged By under drains. Similar dia'ns vader a part of the meadow not manured “ have run freely several times a year.” An acer of long manared land holde within 86 inches ot “the surface 1,610 tonms of watdr; while -the same area and depth of sumildr ground - unmanured holds only 591 tond. These facts show how largely mabouring from 1843 to 1871 changes the charficter and constitusion of & soil. An industrious, . reading and scientific farmer n?ay make his tarm what he pleases, , '

: Sheep Manmrement.! , - A correspondent of a Montoe paper says: “The inquiry is often made of me how I manage my sheep to obtain so large a yield of wool from year to year. Some say, ‘You must feed a large gmount of grain ;’ and when I tell them that I fed no grain to my sheep in the last three or four years, they seem surprised ; but such is the fact. It grain is- fed, corn is best, and should be fed in the months of November and December, assistilg nature (the animal) in its efforts to clgthe itgelf with a heavy, warm coat preparatory fir winter. It is in these months that wool grows the fastest, for the reabon above stated. My sheep are pure bred Spanish Merinos,,and I raise no ticks. A shdep that is infested with ticks cannot produce a heavy ‘fleece of wool, A sure and cheap preventive is to feed once in two weeks one-twentieth part of sulphur, with their salt ; it not only prevents tick , but also the various skin diseases. Lime amnd Salt Mixtuye. . Prof. Johnson recommends for fertilizing purposes to mix one bushel of salt and two bushels of dry lime under cover, and allow the mixture to lecompose gradually, thus forming an intimate chemical union of the two materials/ For this purpose the mixture should He made at least six weeks before use, or, dtill better, two or three months, the heap mentioned being turned over occasiona ly. This salt and lime mixture, when | pplied at the rate of twenty or thirty bushels per acre, forms an excellent top-dressing for many crops. It acts powerfully on the vegetable matter of sdils ; fifty -Bix bushels applied to a turnip crop bave produced as large a crop 4s barnyard manure. It ie also very destructive to grubs and inzects inthesoil. Like salt, it attracts moisture from the air, and is useful again(s drought, Its decomposing power is remafkable, and if three or four bushels of it|are mixed with a load of swamp mu:ck,‘lthe latter will be reduced to a powder. | <

L WAWAKA. | i (Deferred from last week.) ~ Mr. Epitor :—With a sigh, and a tear, \ and a bappy New Year, I.feel not a fear to write locals if I tell the truth, for truth is stranger than fiction in this little town at least. We look upon this bright new year, 13, as ominous perhaps of joy, perhaps ‘of sorrow—that is known only to the great Architect of heaven and earth. " The Rev. Meredith gave us a splendid address last Sunday evening. The subjéct, “old Year, how old art thowf in sin ? Secondly, How old art thou in §visdnm, goodness, ctc.” The address wasgwritten ‘and delivered with an earnestness characteristic of the gentleinan, : ’ Our Sibbath School concert passed off with credit to all engaged in it. A song entitled “I am His lamb,” was applauded amidet tears. :

Mr. Striff has resumed his school duties after a vacation for holidays. Our artist, Mr. Shocmaker, is very busy when the sun shines taking people’s shadows. His artistic zeal ig so great he tried to take the man in the moon a few evenings since, but nearly failed, because the man refused to'come down to his terms. His types, however, can’t be beat. | . The great emporium of trade here is at Jobn F, Knepper's. He keeps a good stock of dry-goods, groceries, hard: ware, and’ crockery. John isa good, Methodjst Republican, and, of course, an honorable dealer. :

Mis. M. M. Dodge, and Mrs, Dr. Nimon, the next day after New Year's, weat “Uver the hille to the poor-house,” and spoke a tew kind words to those old imbecile women who have seen better days. Our coupty may well be proud of thé Paupers’ Palace. It is well warmed by registers, well ventilated, and plenty of well cooked food by the lady matron who presides over the imndoor comforts of ‘the house. : ~ Aload of Wawakiars were invited on New Year's to Mr, Mike Kiser's, near Kendallvilie. They enjoyed themgelves hugely. Tleir appetites were appeased’ by a world of good things, such as roast turkey, and a large dish of nuts to crack, which, by the way, was cracked by the host himself. -We did not ask any ques tions for conscience sake, but, I think he is a- Democrat, for our experienced eyes saw a few copies of the Bansur lying carelessly around. i A pretty severe quarrel took place not far from here this week, but we forbear chronicling such events and leave the bat tle field to brave soldiers, PRroGRrESs.

Gov. Baker’s Last Message. Gov.: Conrad BaKer delivered his last message to-the General Assembly of Indiana, on Friday, Jan. 11th. The most Important points of the document are em: bodied in the following : : - The foreign debt of the State is reported as follows : : ! Amount of 5 per cent State stock under : the adjustment of 1867 .. Theseiai v B 832.860.00 Amount of 214 percents. .. ............ 4,060.13 Amount of war loan bonds issued uuder ks -the legislation of 1861 still outstandCgULL L R B 130.000.00

The interest of this being pledged to the school, it is really no debt atall, in the ordinary acceptance of the term, buta bond that the State shall pay so much into the gchool fund. There is in the bands of the Treasurer of ‘the State the sum of $607,743 84, anc the uncollected proceeds of the State tax for 18172 iy estimated at $350,000. Fhe estimated expenses of the present year ere for the present session of the General Assembly $lOO,OOO, and for the ordinary expenses of Government, be nevolent institutions, reformatories, pPris - ons, interest on domestic debt and on war loan bonds, $785,388. Thisis qn the ground that the expenses of these institutions are thc same as in 1872, but there 18 an imperative demand for the increase of the accommodations for 'the insane, and he thinks the levy for the years 1873 and 1874 for State purposes should be 15 cents on ‘the hundred dollars, and also that sume of the revenue of 1873 will bave to be anticipated for the extra ex penses on this account this year. He calls attentioa to the necessity ot enlarging the duties and responsibilities of the Attorney General, and recommends the law to be changed accordingly, and that that officer be compelled to live at the Capital a 8 the other State officers, and keep an office.

The neeessity of a Burean of Statistics ‘and the establishment of a school of fee—ble minded and idiotic children is point ed out, and recommendations are made in regard to the same. The submission of the amendment to the Constitution forbidding the resumption of the control of the Wabash and Erie Canal, with the as sumption of its debt, and of a vote in regard to the holding of a Constitutional Convention, are recommended for an elec. tion on the second Tuesday in October, at which election also delegates to the said Convention shall be elected, to meet it the people decide to have such Conven tion held. © Liberal appropriations are recommended for the State Geological Department. The Philadelphia Centen. nial Celebration and the Washington Monument are commended to the consid eration of the Legislature without recom mendation, The joint resolution of the Ohio Legislature; and a letter of Gov. Hayes trans mitting the same, complaining of a breach of faith on the part of Indiana ix regard to & compact to keep up the Wabash and Erie Canal, is presented, with the recom mendation that the Legislature pass a Jjoint resdlution denying that such cistract ‘ever existed between the two Stnt:«

By way of kicking the South, sor. one fishes up out ot the census certais statements to the effect that in ArLABAMA 63 per cent. of the voters are wholly illiterate ; in Mississiprr, GEORGIIA, and FrorIDA, 51 per cent, ; 1n KENTUCKY. 28 per cent.; in MARYLAND, 22; in DELa 'WARE, 24; and so on. The deduction from, all this is that & population so grossly ignorant needs paternal restrais, force laws, and the like. g Worse Yet, 7 1 ' We were in errcr, in stating a few days | ago that Governor Banker had signed the ‘ infamous redistricting bill, passed by the Legislatuie. The Governor did even worse ' than we gave him credit for, He exhibiu%a degree of moral cowardice that re. | fleéts much more severely on his character ‘ a 9 the chief magistrate of Indiana. He did not, believe the bill just, or, of course, | he wqurd havesigned it promptly. Know ing it 'to be an outrage, he declined to give it his positive endorsement, but had ‘not the moral courage to veto it, The bill was laid aside by Governor Baker, and allowed to become a law uader u pro. vision of the Constitution, which confines the Governor’s power -to veto a bill to a certain specified numbér of days. Had the Governor signed the bill, some excuse might have been made for him, on -the ground that be believed it to be just. But by allowing it to become a law while ke was, in effect, declaring it unjuast, he has ‘proved himself a greater slave to partisan’ prejudice, than we gave him credit for being. Had that same bill been passed by the Liberals, there is no doubt | that the ‘Governor would have promptly vetoed it, on accouut of its manifest unjustness; but as it was passed by his ownparty, he allowed it to become a law, andthought t» shield himself from blame, by simply refusing to exercise his duty, and veto it. — Hoansville Courier.
