Horrible Occurrence—Child Burned | to Death, Our community was startled last Saturday by the report that the eldest daughter of Geo. H. Kime, aged five years, was 80 badly burned as to render her recov-* ery beyond hope. The particulars of this sad occurrence are substantially as follows: About three o’clock in the after noon of said day, Mrs. Kime went down Btairs to assist her husband in his restanrant, leaving ber infant child securely tied in a small, armed chair, with a strict injunction fo the elder not to go uear the stove. Bad fo relate; this admonition was uot heeded. It appears that the lit. tle girl had gathered - some shavings in her apron, and. in attempting to place them in the stove fire,/was. communicated to her clothing. .In an instant the unfortuaate child was enveloped in flames. Her agonizing screams soon attracted the attention of neighbors who rushed to the scene, and, wrapping a blanket around her body, su(}ceeded in savingiber from being burned to & crisp. But her injaries were atonce discovered. to be of a fatal character, the flames having destroyed the skin upon all-the surface from waist to neck. Dr. Denny “being called in, remedial applications were at once made, and the intense pajn of the sufferer relieved. fTbe devouring element had advanced tog far, however, to justify the hope of sa.vibg the yictim’s life, and despite all medical skill, littie ADA breathed her lastabout one o’clock Sunday morn8. | ’ The remains were interred in the Ligonier Cemetery, Sunday afternoon, Rev. It being froze solid that depth; be built a fire around the pipe for the pur-
pose of thawing it odt. The ice melted colllected steam between the ice and pipe, causing the ice to be blown outof the pipe. Mr. W. was close by waen the explosion took place, blowing ice. and water into bis face hurting him badly but not fatally. The explosion shook his house, and also a houose two hundred yards from the place lof explosion. He informed me that had his head been direct1y over the pipe it would have been blown off. : : el

it T e ; i Our Fire Department. ; Through the columns of the BANNER [ wish tosay a few words concerning thy fire department of Ligonier, ‘which' I consider a failore. There are but very few towns in the State the size of Ligonier bat that have a regularly organized Fire Department.. The Town Council should adopt some measures that will turnish means for purchasing a wagon for sur hooks and ladders, which are almost ;vwo'rtliless without. It would be an easy matter to organize s company that would be & credit to the'place. . . | ° One great fault with our business men’ is, they never do anything but talk, and | but very little of that, until after a canfla gration. The old aduge; “Prepare for war in times of peflég,” holds goud in re=
gurd to fire. We know not the day or the hour it will be upon us. - Although not a property-holder, I will use my best ¢fforts in helping organ ize a company.” Some of the best citizens of our neighboring towns, belong to the fire department. e | Some wiil be ready to say, “what is the use of a wagon? -If a fire breaks out we can carry the hooks, ladders, &2, as easy & to draw a "wagon” Hear reason: Sbhould a fire break out sicross the river, or in some distant part of the town, the chspceé are there would not be a ladder there until tbe whole structure was consumed. But with a well organized com’ peny of forty or fifty members, and a wagon with the books, ladders, buckets &c., ready to start at the sound of an alarm, they would be ready for;business in a short time., = : . :
I consider a good hook and ladder company a more formidable fire extinguisher than an engine. It would tfae well enough to have both, but I _pret‘er't‘hc former as a choice. - - (e ; . There should be a bell on top of the Fire Bailding on the square, accessible )y &DY person, as Lhe'dt;lay in finding the key to the churches would ~'_prnve disas-. trous in many cases. - We will have a fire one of these "days that will make our town look sick, and no possiblé means of extinguishing it. o e Hoping the Council will take hold of this matter I will ecase for the time beibg ° ' WATCHFUL JOE.,

Died Suaddenly of Heart Disease. How common-18 the anoouncement.-— Thousands are suddenly swept into eternity by this futal malady. This Jisease generally bas its origin in.-impure blood filled with irritating, poisonous materials, which, circulating through the heart, irri tate its delicate tissues. Though the irritation may at first be slight, producing a little palpitation or irregular action, yet by and by the disease becomes seated, and inflammation, hypertrophy, or thickening of the lining membrane or of the valves, is prodaced. How wise to give early at tention to a case of this kind., Uuanatural throbbing. or pain in the regicn of the heart should admonish one that all is not right, and if you would presérve it from further disease, you must help it to beat rightly by the use of such a remedy as shall remove the cause ot the trouble. Use Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery before the disease has become too. seated, and it will, by its great: purifying and wonderful regulating properties, effect a pertect cure. It contains medicinal properties which act specifically upon the tissues of the beart, bringing about a healthy action. Bold by all first-class druggists. ) $34
