Carleton’s entertaigment at Kendallville, that “it was the richest literary treat the citizens have enjoyed for many a day.” ; L ~—Dr. Allen, of the Canada Southern Railway, was in town last night, the guest of Hon. Air Line Railroad. —There is'not a whit more danger, as. one of our exchanges understands it, in - bringing a well horse in contact with one having. the epizootic, than there is in using him at home. The (lisease is epidemic and not contagious, | ; —The horee disease, thaks to ingenui ty of journalists, already hhs nine highsounding ‘names, as follows: Epizootic, Hippomelaria, Epihippic, Hippozymosis, Ecbroquodronchiatic, Hippogrip, Eppigooty, Eppizooty and Hipphic. : —That official positions re not always of the most lucrative charagter, is attested by the fact that ‘Squire Green, one of the High Joints in the Iddings Prickett Stan. ley contest, is out three dollars for neces BATY eXDenses over andf'obo e his fees. - —The Goshen parfzacrat says :—“Sev - ernl more handsome brick blocks will be erected on Main street mext summer; and then, with our beautiffil streets and fine private residences, Goshien will be the handsomest city in the State.” : -—The fire buckets, and all the accouterments of the fire department, have been moved to the new building on the.publib square. In case of fire the key will be found at Mr. Silas Shobe'd’residence, just north of the building. Nqw is the time for our young men to organize their praposed Hook and Ladder company. —Concerning the Canada Southern Railway, we are only able to state that the Wolcottyille-Ligonier line has béen found to be a very excellent ond, and that the engineers are now making a final survey. They are expected to arriye here by next Saturday when we will doubtless receive additional information as to the practica—bility of the contemplated| route. | . =—A most remarkable rciilroad accident is reported by the Lagrange Independent a 8 having occurred at Lima last Friday. An “extra” going down tle track at full speed, struck the wagon of Mr. Joseph Btead, breaking it to pieces, and throwing Mr. 8. a distance of 40 or 50 feet. MF. It was a most cheerful assembly. -

—The epizootic is still among us, although it is not regarded with such serious apprehensions as it fwas on its first appearance. We.have Heard of no deaths in this place from the dilease, and do not believe there have been any. Many of the horges first attuck‘edf with it are now at work, and great care |should be exercised in their driving, ag too great exertion, and want of prop’er care, may bring about fatal results. L —The North~Easterd Indiana Medical Yociety met in this placd yesterday. About .wenty physicians wer;f in attendance. A number of persons appdared and were examined, and many inté}eéfing cases were reported and discusged.| Dr. G. The proceedings were of the utmost - interest throughout.. The next meeting UG IS A Anpcts 00 the second.

Avilla Loecal. . AviLnas, November 30. Eprror BANNER:— The engineers of the Baltimore, *P)‘ttsburgh and Chicago Railroad ére in town at present. They are not surveying a new line, a 2 some have falsely reported, but they are correcting ‘and straightening up curves, and are setting the centre stakes as they go, on the last surveyed line, which runs south of this town and intersects with the Detroit & Eel River and the Jackson & Saginaw Railroads, at Auburn., The indications at present are, that the railroad company will select this route, and as they are receiving many offers from sub contractors to do the grading, they doubtless will commence to work early in the spring. The right of way through this township is about secured, and even the depot grounds are offered as a donation, by Messrs. Speccer and Wheeler, the present owners of the old- “ Tenant Farm,” which they recently purchased of Mr. K. B. Miller, and through which the railroad will run. i

The report, started at Kendallville, that a branch of the B, P. & C. Railroad was to run from Defiance via Auburp and Kendallville, is untrue, as I am assured by good railroad authority. It istrue the company is desirous of having a branch leading into Michigan, which is to Tun from Defiance via Bryan to Coldwater. So you see Kendallville is left “out in the cold” again and must be content with two roads for the preéent.' - A brakeman on the Grand Rapids & Indiana v'rs'xilroad,' who lived at Sturgis, but whose name I have not learned, was killed near Huntertown, while sitting in the caboose, by the falling of a plank from a lumber car which was attached to the caboose. The deceased lived but a short time after the accident. i Last Thursday while Rev. Mr. Moore, of Swan township, was out riding with his wife he accidentally drove over a stump, upsetting the wagon box and throwing Mrs. Moore under the wheels of .the wagon which ran over her body, causing death within twenty-four hours. The deceased was widely known and universally respected. She leaves a large circle of friends to mourn over her death.

The epizootic-has made its appearance in this and adjoining townships, but as yet it is confined to a few cases, . There are numerous buildings to be erected in this town next spring, among them a two story brick store house will be erected by Messrs. Baum, Walter & Co. Our town possesses a first-class livery stable now. Any one wishing to go into the country from this place can be accommodated. i : ‘Messrs. Baum, Walter & Co: are, and have been, shipping regularly every week from one to two car loads of live hogs. Our town is as good a live stock market as any 1n this part of the counftry. There are two firms dealing in Poultry ; one firin alone shipped within three weeks 150 barrels. _ I am grieved to note the departure of our esteemed fellow citizen and townsman, Mr. Am. Suyder, to Ligonier, as he is an intelligent and industriotis young man. I wish him abundant success in whatever business he may engage in. ~ Itis due to Mr, R. 8. Haines, the late Trustee of our township, to credit Him with the fine, two story brick schoolhouse referred to in last week’s issue of the BANNER, as he proposed the building. Our town pobsesses a Masonic Lodge since the Ist of November. Its principal officers are Joel Isbell, W. M.; S.K.Ran} dall, 8. W., and G. H. Fairbanks, J. W. Its prospects are very flattering. _ The Catholics intend to erect a new brick church next spring. This step is very necessary, as their congregation is large and is growing stronger every day. . ; . REPORTER.

Cromwell Items. | DEAR BANNER:—AImost all the own- ] ers of horses in this vicinity are afraid of the epizootic. It has not made any great prevalence among us'as yet. A case or two at Indian Village and the samz toward Sparta, is about ‘all. None are seriously ill; and as yet' we have no deaths to record. Scarcely a man can be persuaded to take bis team to Ligonier for fear of the disease, and yet we have it among us and on all sides. I have a theory that if horses are used properly and well cared for the danger is not great, but tast driving and warming a team of horses and then leaying them stand for hours in the cold without a blanket or shelter, would produce the disease were it not ever in the country. I thiok, too, that the account of the disease at your place has been won derfully magnified among us, and many persons have been deterred from going there to trade, when really-there was but little danger. And so it is, a molehill soon becomes a mountain ; and I do verily believe that if the proper care was taken, with an eye open to prevention, there is dt present no more real danger of losing horse flesh than in seasons of ordinary distemper. As it is, a great deal is lost to all parties in trade which really need not be. Let all of 'us resolve to try to I understand our own interests. NED. -

Our excellent friend, Senator Beggs, of Franklin county, recently offered-a resolution directing an inquiryinto the charges that William R. Holloway, Samuel M. Douglass and A. H. - The Horse Disease, It will be wel! if the owners of horses will cut the following instructions, issued by the United States quartermaster to all government employees having in charge horses belonging to the government, and preserve the same for future reference in case the malady should make its appearance in this county: / . On the first appearance of the disease give the horse a thorough ateaming with boiled oats placed in a bag and so fastened to the head that the steam from the oats will be inhaled. Repeat this until the discharge from the nostrils is free and of a natural color. Then take leather, or what is petter, carbolic disinfectant, in grains like large sized cannon powder, placelt in a shallow pan and burn it - where the horse will be obliged to breathe it. If the throat is sore (which generally is the case) apply frequently hot vinegar, rubbing it well in with the hand, and - wrap the throat in flannel dipped in vine ‘gar.” Sponge out the nostrils frequently with warm vinegar. Blanket well night and day, bu‘ not enough to produce sweating, and give plenty of fresh clean bedding. Give several bran mashes, with from one halt to one ounce of powdered nitre in each, and ‘use linseed meal or flaxseed in the oats. Use tepid water in the mash. The hay and oats should be moistened with water—preferably tar water. ' Most cases, if taken in time, will yield to the above treatment, ; but should the attack be very severe, accompanied with' considerable fever and very sore throat, instead of vinegar, an embrocation of equal parts of linseed oil, turpentine, tincture of cantharides and hartshorn should be rubbed in, night and morning. Giye as a drench, night and morning, the following : Spirits of nitre .ether, 1 ounce ; laudanum, 4 drachms ; nitrate of potassa, 3 drachms, water, 1 pint. Mix, Should the horse refuse his feed, offer him frequently thin gruel with a hand. ful of pulverized-slippery elm bark and licorice root stirred in it. Sl , - When convalescing exercise gently. daily and stimulate the appetite with the following ball : Extract of gentian, 6 drachms ; powdered ginger, 2 drachms. Mix. A handfull of ashes mixed with a little salt thtown into the feed trough for the horse to lick up, will be relished by him and will be beneficial; ;
