Cromwell COrm’oiae-ge} ' : CroMWELL, IND., October 21. DeAr Baxser:—The citizens of this vicinity were paaticipants of a rich feast on. last Wednesday evening. Mr. G. W, Hughbes has ‘been among vs for some weeks as a teacher of music, and at the concert on the evening aforesaid he showed how capable he was of taking raw material and making good singers of them in'an incredibly short space of time. Old and young' were there in concert, producing those harmonious, heavenly strains of music, such as not only soothes the savage breast, but begets a harmonious feeling in the hearts of all listeners. The scenic effect was good, the music was delighttul, yet we are sorry to say that Cromwell ‘boasts of some would be young men who are diligently cultivating a dawny moustache, and who so far forget the common civilities of life as to get drunk on almost —yes, on every occasion when they can get mean whisky or sour cider to drink, only to make fools of themselves at all gatherings and meetings of whatever description. They want an example very much. We are now trying to take up another school, and, no doubit, new laurels will crown the energy of Mr. Hughes. . ' NED.

According to previous arrangements, the members of the Institute held a special session in the schoolhouse of District No. 1, in Perry township, on Friday evering, the 18th inst., for the purpose of electing officers and completing a permanent organization, and of listening to a lecture, with illustrations, on Theory and Practice of Teaching, by .Prof. Hartzler, of Ohio. The Institute was called to order by the President, B. F. Boller. The Secretary’s report of the previous meeting was read and adopted, after which a number of names were added to the membership of the saciety. g A committee of three was appointed to make nomibations for officers, which committee reported the following, who were elected to fill the respective positions: For President, B. F. Boller ; Vice President, D. H. Wenger; Secretary, A.J. Yoder; Tieasurer, S. Hartzler, A. J. Yoder, Nellie Coutz and Simeon Lantz were appointed an Executive Com. mittee, - f o . Mr. H. isa live teacher, and his lecture was highly entertaining and, we trust, will be produc tive of good results, S The executive committee then aunounc: ed a programme for the next meeting and the ipstitute adjourned, to meet again ob Saturday, November 10th, at 10 o’clock, Ao A..J. Buy your oysters at Ben Barnhart’s. Cheap and delicious. . 2 e — The Stanley=-Livingstone Expedition. We notice in press of the Union Pib lishing Gompany; ot Chicago, a volume to he sold by subscription, which will, with out doubt, give the real facts of the New York Herald expedition to Africa in search of Dr. Livingstone, under.tbe com mand of Henry M. Stanley. This volume will produce as great a sensation:as Dr. ‘Livingstone'’s first volume, or the first pews in the Herald of the finding of Dr. Livingstone. We see it 18 intended to give an account of the Ancient Civiliza tion and Modern Situation of Africa, its many distinguished explorers, including their accounts of lion clephant and zebra hunting. Those who bave read Dr. Liv ingstonc’s work on the explorations of Atrica will, undoubtedly, be eager to see this, Many remember Gordon Cumming’s wonderful tales of bunting in South Afri—ea, We should judge from the advance sheets that this book would equal, if not excel, anything previously written on this subject. At least everything from tbis -most, ihteresting part of the globe will be read with interest. Books on these subjects are good, wholesome, instructive reading. Would that there were many more printed on the comparatively unknown parts of the world. _

JETHRO ANDERSON, (barber,) says that a man whocan publish such a paper as Mr.Stoll’s, and then try to get colored men to vote for him, has more cheek than a govercment mule.— W. W. Skillen's Local. We beg to inform Mr. Skillen’s ebony~ colored chum ‘that ‘we intend to continue publishing just such a paper as suits us, and that it would be more becoming for an individual of his capacity to wait until he is asked to vote for us or any one on our ticket, before rushing into print with his valuable opinion. Mr. Skillen will confer a favor by reading and explaining this paragraph to his somewhat over-zeal-ous co-laborer and devoted crony.
