.. : ¥ Agricultural Department. A S A lAU P AP el N NTN SN ORS CONDUCTED BY JONATHAN SIMMONS. e e e e e e . How 1o Preserve a Carriage. A prominent carriage manufacturer of —-Nottingham, England, publistics a series of “Useful Hints for the, Proper Préserva- . tion of a Carriage,” from which we take the following: '~ | - - A carriage should be kept in an airy, dry coach-house, with a moderate amount of light ; otherwise the colors will be destroyed. : . e ‘ There should be no communicatior be- _ tween the stables and the coachihouse. "The manute heap or pit should be kept ~ as far away as possible. Ammonia jcracks varnish and fades the colors both of painting and lining. : A carriage should never, under gny circumstances, be put away dirty. i In washing a carriage, keep ont of the ¢un, and have the léver end of the|“setts” “ covered with leather. Use plenty of wa. _ ter, which apply, where practicable, with "> a hose or syringe, taking great care that “ the water is not driven into the body, to the injury.of the lining. When forced water is not attainable, use for'tlie body a large, soft spénge. This, when{saturated, eqneeze oyer the panels, and by tbe flow down of the water the dirt will soften and harmlessly run off; then finish ujith a soft- chamois leather and| an old silk bandkerchief., The same remarks apply to tlie underwork -and wh els, ex cept that when the mud 1s well spaked a ‘gnft, mop, free {rom any hard substance in the head, may be used. Never use a spoke’ brush, which in conjunction with the grit from the road acts like sand-paper on tte varnish, scratching It, and, of course, ef-. * fectually rémoving all gloss. Never allow -water to dry itself on the earriage, asit invariably leaves etains. | Be careful to grease the bearings of the fore carriage o as to allow it to thrn free. ly. Ifit turns with difficalty, the shafts or pole will probably strain or break. . Examine a carriage occasionally, and whenever 4 bolt or slip appears t 6 be getting loose, tighten it up-with ajwrench, and always have little repairs| done at * _onhce. ; Never draw out o’ bick a carrjage into a coich house with the horses pttached, as niore accidents occur from this than any other cause; Headed carriages should neper stand ‘with the head down, and aprong of every kind should be frequently unfolded or they will soon spoil.” : 1 ‘<
About Digging Potatods, ~ In harvesting potatoes, different plans are observed by diffgrent persns. By some tliey are dug quite early, ds soon as the tops are partially Becayed, apd imme diately _taken to the cellar. By others they are left until there is danger of the freezing of the ground, L In our youth we' assisted ig digging from 300 to 700 bushels of potatoes annu ally, and the practice was fo thirow them into baskets as fust as they wer¢ dug, and from the baskets into: tlhie camt. When the cart was full, they were immediately taken’to the cellar. These potatoes, of various kinds, were usunally excellent in quallity, Ueing mealy, and ofjagreeable flavor, They were grown on nefw ground, which would partly account for their good quality. || . ; Which is the most approprigte time to lit them, early or late ok ‘ On looking over i’mfcssur Goadby's work on “Vegetable and Animal Physiology,” we find a table which’may throw. light upon the above question, [IFe says that “it was fo;]md by experimept that 240 pounds of potatoes left in the ground contained of starch: In augadt, 23 to 25 pounds ; in September, 82 to 88 pounds; in Ontober, 32 to 40 pounds; fin Novem ber, 38 to 45 pounds; in Apr]l, 38 to 28 pouads; in May, 28 to 20 pounds.” The gquantity of starch remained the same during the dormant state in winter, but decréased as soon as the piant began to grow. | _From our own observation] we are in .clined to think that the pothto ig better off 10 dry ground in its native bed until ‘some time in October, if not endangered by worms or floods, and that they are better not to be exposed much to the sun or wind,— Ee. = : ‘
© | ‘Sheep on Low Ground. It is gefier:ally believed that low, wet land is very unfavorable for sheep. I have kept a flock for four years inja pasture of this description—for the firgt two years with unfavorable results, My sheep were, unhealthy, and many of theny died. T ascribe it to ‘the wetness of:} my. pasture. Upon the recommendation of an old tarmer, I gave the sheep charcoa} mixed with - salt. The beneficial effects of [this mixture were soon apparent. - My sbaep presented a more healthful appearance, I have con tinued the treatment and itbe animals have continued to thrive. I suppose the medicinal qualities of the mixture consists in the disintecting propertyTof the charcoal,” And in. the invaluable tonic and alterative properties of thelrsnlt., we may add ; for, like many other remedial agents, ‘this article, when given in| small doses, augments the digestive functions.
