lendallville Correspondence. ' - KEnpALLVILLE, IND., Sept. 3. . EpiTors BANKER :—Hon. John Sarnighausen spoke at Gappinger’s hall, on last Wednesday evening, to alarge audience of our German fellow citizens, in their native language. It will be remembered by many that at the last meeting of our legislature this gentleman was deposed from his seat in the Indiana Senate sand another put in his place by the vote of every republican member save gne and of four democratic members. -Like an hon. -orable gentleman, he returned home, believing that his political principles were correct, and again submitted hig claims to the convention and was nomipated for ‘that office, and will be elected to the Senate by the largest majority given to any member of that body. - The speéech I am told was a very able one and was highlyappreciated by those who were|so fortunate as to be able to understand the German language. “ ; It baving been announced in the afternoon that Hon. George W. Julian would address the people after Mr. Sarnighaus - en had closed his remarks, the hall remained crowded until the cloge of that gentleman’s speech. About half past nine o’clock Mr. Julian appeared and made a short address, which was received with rapturous applause. But few present had ever heard Mr. Julian, and none, I pre. sume, who were there, will sopn forget the scathing denunciations of GTant, Morton, Cameron and others, as it fell from the lips of the speaker. Mr. Juljan is one of those men who has tought for principle, regardless of popularity. He is not one
who i 8 compeiled to deny hig past record or denounce any measures which he has once advocated. If the principles which he advocated and believed to |be rifght. were popular enough to elect him to office, well and good, but if they were not, he nevertheless ceased to advocate them, and will therefore be admired even by those who may once have differed with him. Mr. Julian expressed himself well pleased with the audience on that occasign. If he should ever again be announced to speak 1n this place he will be greeted by such an audience as will make him feel proud. The county convention, last Baturday, was well attended by the people of Wayne township. We had several candidates who manfully withdrew their names when they saw that others would:be selected by the people, which will add much to their strength in future copventions in this county, if their names should ever be presented again. As far as thel location of our candidates is concerned, they are similarly located with those of ths oppo site party, and I judge no advn{;tagc can be taken in that respect. The nominees who have been selected by the Grantites,: are weak men and time will dfvelop, if it has not already developed, that fact, while our candidates are strdng"‘men, and if they are not elected, it will be owing to the apathy .of some of their friends. Mr. Sarnighausen was ententained™at the residence of John Gappinger while here on last Wedncsday. . The gentlemen who came here to represent the county in the interests of the Louisville “side show” stecred straight for the postoffice first, but not finding their man there, they next made tracks for Bunyang’, but “Hi” was not there. They then held a consultation, the result ot which I am unable to give. : Mr. Julian stopped at the redidence of George C. Glatte, while in town on last Wednesday. The Grant office holders were pretty thick at our convention last Saturday. - - HoRAcE.
. KENDALLVILLE, IND, Sept. 9. The Standard seems to be considerably exercised over the statement that the people have saved on two items alone in the Auditor’s office $250, and dards any one to explain it. The matter is iry plain, and an explanation will reflect very much upon the editor of that paper, who had things pretty much his own way with regard to prices paid for county printing, until Mr, Stewart came in possession of that office. The saving of this amount to ‘ the county, was brought about by Mr. Btoll, who published the Delinquent Tax List at 30 cents a description, while Myers had always received 60 cents for the same. On Assessor’s blanks‘tuite anamount was saved by the exercige of good judgment as to the quantity nceded, and which were purchased at a lower price than had been paid before, - Another very important matter, which I propose to explain to the péople of this county, is the publication of ceftain land descriptions, for which he received 60 cents, contrary to law. It is well known that if a man hLas personal property, the ‘taxes must be made out of that, not out of his real property. But prior toer. Stewart's coming into office, all such descriptions were published in ordeli that this man Myers might draw from the people of Noble county a large amount| of money illegally. Now I propose that the com missioners commence a suit and recoyer from this “Wm. M. Tweed,” ot Noble county, the moncy which he has so unjustly obtained. As Isaid before, the people want men to manage their affairs at Al bion, not boys, so that the “I}weeds" of this ccunty may be kept a safe distance from our treasury. If these matters had been closely watched,Noble county would be several hundred dollars riclier to day. Now if he dares me to explain some other ‘things, I sball do it. The records show that he has not only filched money from the county in this way, but L’rom men, also. : | . Those who attended the Louisville convention from this place are not very well pleased with what they saw there. They bave concluded that. it was a very poor investment, and that it is not going to conduce much to the success of the Grant ticket afterall, The Grant party will have less money to use in corrupting voters at the coming election, they having spent o largely in this Louisville movement,: for which we may be thankful, : During the ringing of the church bells, while the people were hurrging to their respective places of worship, oh last Sunday morning, two individuals might have been seen on Mitchell street, terribly enraged, using much profanity, and bent on doing each otber personal hdrm. How often do. we see an Illustration of the old saying : By the side of the church stands the brothel.” j b . Wayne township will give a majority - for the county and State ‘tickets and do better for Greeley and Brown. | ~ A strange womdn was seen perambulating the streets one day last|week talking just as Jim Walker did when he first came up here from the South, | After she had made her speech and comamitted some depredatiors a ticket was furnished her and she went on east. ORACH.
Counry FAlr.— Only two weeks inter'-»'] veue between now and the time for holding the County Fair. Itss high time that our farmers, mechanics, and all others who are interested in the welfare of the So-. ciety were making-haste to bring some: ‘ thiog that will add to its interest. Are ‘ you doing it? Do you intend to give the ‘ officers the support due them? If you will, the coming exhibition will be far superior to any we ever had. ' The prem. jum list is liberal, .and embraces 'all branches of industry. The officers of the gociety are working hard to| insure the earnest co-operation of all, bt their efforts will prove abortive unlees all take hold and assist them. Regolve now to give them your earnest support, by con: tributing some articles to the coming Qqfin;y%‘oir. AR TS U U o We Jearn that there is but bne German ip Columbus who will not support Stoll.
v .. For the National Banner, - . A Letter from the Pastor. Corunna, DEKALs Co, IND., | - September 2nd, 1872. { Eprrors BANNER:—On the. 24th of August the good people of the Albion and Mount Pleasant congregations (Lutheran) surprised their pastor by giving to him liberally of such “good things of this life” as God had prospered them with. I said they surprised him, and a surprise it really was. Just think, gentlemen, when people, at this busy sedson of tbe year, will leave their fields and their kitchens and spend more than half a day at the church, administering to the wants of their pastor, it is a matter of surprise. When the pastor made his appearance at the church and saw the sacks and bundles ‘that had been brought in he felt sill more surprised, and when sacks and bundles
continued to comg he was surprised beyond measure, In the first instance, he said within himself, “good!” in the next be could say, “better!” and when it was ascertained that the Albion congregation had contributed thirteen dollars worth ot wheat and other necessaries, and that the Mount Pleasant congregation had contributed eighty-two dollars and sixty-two cents worth of a like kind, making a total of ninety five dollars and sixty-two cents, he could not help saying “best!” and after examining the contents of each sack, bundle and crock, his language was, “best of all!” But what shall we say now? On last Saturday morning three young ladies, of the Mt. Pleasant congregation, made their appearance at tbe pastor’s residence, scized the fine dress which was presented to Mrs. Keller by the.young people of that congregation, cut, fitted, and nearly completed the making of it, and then—not being satisfied with what they had already done—they took it bome with them and finished it. Now, after all that has been done, we must say that: “Truly, the lines have fallen unto us in pleasant places.” | . The kind donors have our best wishes in return, and also the assurance that they -will not be forgotten at the throne of grace. In haste, PAsTOR.
