T N e .+ . EmspALLVILLE, Augustl2. © Mr. Epmor :—Over a dozen of ourcit“izens left here on the early morning train to attend the Congressional Convention, which was held at Columbia City on the ’ 6th inst. We arrived at the crossing of -the Eel River railroad in good time for the train on the other road, which carried us to our destination. We met on that train quite & large delegation from the counties of DeKalband Steuben, together with the Angola band which ‘enlivened the occasion with good music. - And herz I must not forget to say that drum major ‘ John Miller accompanied the delegation - with his Greeley band of martial music, from this place. The train stopped about twenty minutes at Chernbusco, and, looking about this growing little place,we saw bills announcing that Hon. John B. Stoll wonld address their citizens on the political issues of the day, on the next evening, . August 7th. We met at the convention many of the prominent men of the Tenth District, among whom were many Republicans who cannot endorse Grantism, and who took a lively interest in the business of the convention. The candidates nominated at that convention will prove to be strong men, E. Van Long, of Warsaw, is an able lawyer and will not disappoint his friends in tbe present political battle. General Hascall, four years ago, cast the electoral vote of the District tor Grant, but he will this year cast it for Greeley. L. E. Goodwin is a good lawyer and will poll a large vote.” His election, though be has a .large majority to overcome, is quite probable. We arrived home about 7 o’clock in the evening feeling considerably fatigued ‘with our journey, but well pleased with the results. . : Senator Henry Wilson, candidate for 'Vice President cn the Grant ticket, spoke to a large'audience, at this place, on the 19th inst. His voice almost failed him, and it was with the greatest difficulty that be could speak loud enough to be heard, even by those quité near him. Ile is a large, muscular man, and I should think was in the enjoyment.ot good health. His complexion is quite dark, and nothing very expressive in his coantenance.. His teeth are very irregular and, to some extent, affects his articulation. His speech is the same one.that e delivered in South Carolina, and, in fact, wherever he gocs.'j He put in many apologies for Grant and owns up very mildly to his faults. He raised his hands. heavenward and gaid : “There are sfl)ots on yonder sun, yet it is the source of all light and heat,” thereby l inferring that Grant, though there are ‘ many dark spots on his character, is the great source of light and all that is good of the republican party. That is pure Grantism, and just the kind of light that has driven the best'men out of that party, and from the support of Grant. e denicd making some of the s"péecbes with which he is charged, but be did not deny ‘that e bad been a member of the know - nothing party; and to day Henry Wilson would not be ‘& member of the United States Senate but for his former opposition to the interests of.the foreign elements of the country. Those times developed him, and he bas been able to hold on to position through adroitness and skill, learned and practiced by him in those dark lantern lodges. Mr. Wilson stopped at the hotel until near noon, when he was taken to the elegant residence of Mr. Jas. Golgrove, Esq., for dinner. By the way, Mr. Colgrove is a Greeley man, and has been quite active in his defense. Rumor has it now that he has deserted the Old White Hat. The Grant office.iolders set a trap for bim,but T hardly think he was caught by that kind of bait. We shall see, The Senator%left on Saturday morning for Ft. Wayne, where he was to speak that day. A fair estimate of the crowd in attendance wenld be about four thousand, of whom nearly one-half were citizens of this place. The “turn out” trom the country was not what had been expected from the great cfforts made by the “faithful.” One of the sharpest political meetings we have had in our city during the campaign, was held in Gappinger’s hall,/under the auspices of the Greeley and Brown club, last Saturday evening. Notwithstanding the rain, a large crowd filled the hall to hear Hon. John C.Conner, member ; of Congress from the State of Texas. He is the youngest member in that body, and was elected by the largest majority, hav‘ing been elected to his second term by a majority of some 19,000. The speaker discussed: the political issues of the day with much ability. He paid particular attention-to the questions of pensions for rebel soldiers and payment of the rebel ~debt, about which the Grantites harp so ‘ much, and showed the impracticability of i ‘the whole thing. It would take & twothirds vote in congress to propose it, then, it would have to be ratified by three fourths of all the States to annul the present amendment which now prohibits it. 'He met, and so successfully refuted, the base charges made against him by the Standard of last week, that Dr. Myers came forward | after-the speech and réquested an idtro - duction and congratulated the Captain on hig#fine speech. " His remarks upon “Stand by the Old Flag,” as the Grantites have it, were rich, and, in conclusion, he advised those seeking new homes to go to Texas, believing that it presents advanta. ges to settlers not. to be found elsewhere. Permit me to say that Mr, Conner made many warm friends while here, and that his speech was highly appreciated. We shall long remember him as a strongad - vocate of the cause of good government. " My friend, Bill Groh, was happy last Saturday, from the fact that one of his old republican friends had told him that he, too, would vote for Greeley, after hearing the speeches on Friday. That is right; ‘investigate and you will all vote for Gree“"fi..E:G?fodvaifi will address the Greeley Bnd Brown club next Friday evening, st f@"f!gfir'%?*s hall. Lt us have a fall atBl . AR e

As a citizen of Whitley county, we feel 4 due amount of Interest in selecting one of the best men to make the race for joint Senator from the counties of Kosciusko and Whitley. The district bas always gone republican—the large : republican majority of Kosciusko overbalancing the democratic majority of Whitley—btt the great political revolution, now going on all over the country, will give the Democrats and Liberals a chance to secure the joint Senator from those counties, if they are careful to select a proper person. Among all the good men in the two counties, we know of no one,who would ‘probably make a better. race for the poéi- | tion than Dr. D. M. Marshall, of Pierce-, ton. He isa man of /unimpeachable char acter, a live, active worker, a pleasant and fluent speaker. For years we have been intimately acquainted with the doctor, and know whereof we’' speak, and cheerfully ask that his claims be carefully considered by the convention which is to meet at Pierceton, on' the -24th inst., to nominate a candidate for that important position. We want a man who will be true to his convictions, and who will act from principle in every instance. If there is one thing morecontemptibly mean than another, it jsa wishy-washy public servant who is willing to do anything for selfaggrandisement, regardless of the wishes of his constituents, Dr. Marshall isa man of honor in this matter, besides he is not an office seeker, nor never, has been. A man who is eternally seeking office, and who is always ready to bolt when he does not get it, should be very carefully thrust aside ; and kn’owing that Dr. M. is not an office seeker, a bolter, nor a disorganizer under anycircninstances, we feel confident that he would make a most desirable man in the place for which we are asking that his claims be considered.
