- CONDUCTED BY JONATHAN SIMMONS. | NN NN AP AN PP AN S '\""\”?g i | Bee Culture, W\NL P At the late meeting of the Ve! mo’ntg State Board of Agriculture & paper on Bee Culture was read by 0. C, Wait, Esq., of Georgia, according to the report, which’ we find in the St. Albans Mfl%-‘ “Mr. ‘Wait said that even the most timidnimighg learn tohll:?n$ gee‘twith im ty. Honey sells’ er than sugar ns:onts'lm. n?én’ gootf cnlonig vfl‘h earn more than ten good men. ientific care will tell favorably. Bee-k?eping may become as comnion hére as ifl Prussia, and not only be a great source of revenuve, but a common loxury. Mr. W, gave many particulars of the management and habits of bees, not only of curious interest, but of great importance to any who may choose to engage in the business, ‘Amonf the statements was this: ‘One queen may be and often is the mather of 560,000 bees.” Queens owe to each other great hostility. For 3,800 years the history of the bee has been intimately associated with that of the human race. He | referred to the use of honey as food in the Bcripture records. Though the bee is not made in God’s image, yet many of | their habits—neatness, ingustrg, economy ; and dgovemment—may profitably be-imi- | tated by men. It has been supposed that | their government is an absolute moarchy, { but, on the contrary, it is a more perfect republic than the world has ever seeni among men, and the females have their equal share. Mr, Wait here drew an amusing comparison between their government. and our own, not only in a political, but in a social sense. ‘ “Every fruit-grewer and farmer should keep'a few colonies of bees for the more perfect growth of his crops. They carry the pollen from flower to flower, and ‘thus, while gathering honey, they spread the seeds of growth and multiply the fruit. Thisisa refatation 'of the com. mon idea. j : “Bee keeping pays—not only six per cent,, but a handsome profit, according ‘to management, BStatistics were given, by which it appeared that colonies would ! produce from five to two hundred and | sixty pounds a season, which would aver- | age about 29 cents. He thatight that an{ average would be about forty-eighti pounds. An investment of $6OO would yield about $OOO, or 150 per cent, Beekeeping ought not to be considered insig; nificant under these circumstances. It ig easy, fascinating and philosophical bet sides. Mr. Wait extended his figures, and uhow§d by low estimates that it may be made tore profitable than any other branch of our industry, | “Mr. Fisher, of Fairfield, being calle out,-testified from experience in favor of bee keeping, though he had discard patent hives. i - “Dr. Hoskins, of the Vermont FarM, referred to the experience of Mr. J. E. Crane, whose father objected to his foqling away his time in keeping bees, bit which, after & little while, producedia greater income than all the rest of the farm besides.” i 1
& ; Cultare of Sage. f Bage is best grown on rich, sandy loam, It ‘is necessary. that the soil be naturally dry or artificially drained, especially if the plantation is intended to be permanent, since this herb, although hardy, does not winter well on wet or moist soiis. For garden culture the plants should|be set one foot apart, in rows eighteen inches asunder; but for field culture, two feet apart by nine or ten inches in the row -would be more economical in the cultiva. tion thereof, | About seven .thousand seeds are ‘c(t; tained in an ounce ; therefore, four ount of seed should be smple for an acrein field culture, It is tisual to sow the s¢ed in a carefully prépared bed in April, and transplant into their permanent situation| in June, or when the plants are twoj or three inches high; but if the land is not weedy, they may be sown where they iare to stand, at the rate of one pound and a half of seed to the acre. Cover three quarters of* an inch deep, and sow a few radish seeds along the rows to mark the lines for convenience in weeding. ’l;hin eventually to the proper distance as before directed.. The profits on sage culture will depend upon the local demand, as %ou canuot expect to compete with large growers unless you have facilities for drying and packing. You may get the seed of any of the seedmen.— Western Rural. -
¥ Bleeding of Grape Vines. | A correspondent of the Garderer's Chronicle. recommends as preferable to the method of putting a potatd on the treshly-cut end of a grape vine, to stop bleeding, to use flexible collodion, which has been found so thoro,fi%h a styptic for wounds of the human body. Two dressings were given with theend of a feazgner, " thoroughly covering the wound twice in | the course of & few minutes, the third or final coat being put on about half an Hour afterwards, when the cut was completely sealed up, and in the conrse of a few minutes became quite hard, so that there was; - mot the least sign of any bleeding. |ln the course, of ten ;days the vines| grew away strongly and vigorously, and gl;’ave since continued to do so. Some choice ! gehrgoniums were also cut down and ressed twice ; this was guite sufficient to heéal the wound, and in the cour's: of three or.four days the eyes were starfing - again, showing great vigor. It was found equally efficient with Aphelandra Leofol' dit, Buphorbia jacquiniaflora, and Luculia gratissima. In the treatment of the fu- ' phorbia, and all the tribe of plants that bleed at the same rapid rate, it was found necessary to have a small piece of sponge to wipe off the milky juice, so as toget the colodion to adhere, and they require to be gone over as' many -times as jthe vines, - : aior B | P o 5
Lima Boans Without Poles. | Poles or stakes in many places are hard to get, and thus many are deprived of this delicious ;vegetable for waht of meang to raise them, Some years ago it was %oposed, in order to do away with the . Decessity for poles, to lay brushwood |on the ground and let the vines run over it. This plan, though reported favorably|on at the time, bas never become popular. Now we see that a Michigan gent{)emun hu,dileov?ed that by cutting &fl' all the vines, or slender twining branches, the plant soon loses the disposition to climb up poles, and remains a thick-set bush, bearing as abundantly as if trained in the usual way. ¢ { It seems scarcely probable thatt ely would bear quite so ireely. Perhaps this is tinged a little with the enthusiasm of success, for it is indeed a greatjaueoeé if this great trouble of vegetable \growd{a, " the bean pole, can be dispensed with. One can spare a few beans willingly, if the facts are even nearly as represented. — Weekly Press. e 4

Advertising alone does not produce success The thing which is advertised must have intrinsic merit, or else large advertising will eventually do it more harm than good. If you havganything which you know to be good, advertise 4t thoroughly, and you will be sure to succeed ; if it is poor, don’t praise it, for people will soon discover you are lying.
