"' . KENDALLVILLE, April'24. | Eprroß BANNER:—Our, city has’ not been written up for about two months, or, if it has, I have not scen it; therefore, I | have concluded, as news litems are very scarce, to branch out a little in that direction; and, as I am a new beginner, your readers’ must not expect any very. heavy Ty . { | descriptions or a very smoothly varnished bistory of our youmg Ccity, but, on the tontrary, a simple narrative of a few facts. ‘First, we have six dry goods stores, all of 4wh§ch are doing a prosperous business.—- | Mr. 8, J. M. Loomis has been in the busi ness the longest of any of those now here, and has on hand the secopd largest stock. "Jaco'b Keller, who recently succeeded Jacobs & Keller, has ‘on hand the largest stock, and is the principal produce buyer. The annual sales of the six establishments, in the aggregate, amonnt to over $125,000. i In groéei’s we have the familiar names of Geo. C. Glatte, Wm. Groh, Reub. Miller, and a number of others who .have more recently started. = Glatte, Miller, and Ringle have been in the business the longest. In point of amount of goods "sold they would (in my humble opinion) rank as foll,c_)w,s ¥ "Glatte; Groh, :A. C. F.;Wich_man & Co., Waltman & Bro., Schwartz, Ringle, Wolf, Lovett, and others, in all cleven, .whose combinged annugl sales, including everything they sell, would reach $200,000.: We havettwq buot and shoe storcs, where can be tound every variety of goods in that'line,j viz: Jacob Reyher -and Harry Ward, Jake is the oldest hand at this, business and understacds it from “ A to ‘izard,” and ig selling piles of goods “cLeap for cash” On the other hand, Hdrry “knows how to sell goods,” being one of _the very best salesmen in, the city, and is having a good trade. Their annual sales reach about $60,000. Besides these there aré two otber boot and shoe shops, for _repairing and. Qn._ak‘;ng goods to order.— ‘We are supplied with puinine by four large and well ordered drug stores, the oldest 'of which are Bunyan Bro’s and L. F.Abell. Mr. Abell has the best arranged and pretticst drug store in thg north part of the State. ~ All.are doing a good business, but, as drugs are not w}e_x"y plesa';ur,, I shall pass to what they have suggested to my mind, and that is our tomb stone men, of which we have two, Geo. Aichele and Mr. Willett, both carrying on exten: sive shops. Mr. W. has been here since last summer and has, in this short time, | put up a number of very fine stones; he is agent for the celebrated Scotch Granite stone. ' But this is more gloomy than drugs, and I pass to -notice the furniture rooms of H. W. Schmter,, who has the finest stock ever brought to this city.— . Rossbacher, and Berhalter & Hirsch, also manufacture and keep on'hand all kinds of furniture; in all threé good establishments of this kind. - I.did not intend to get this far away from the hardware stores, ot which we have two very fine ones. Foremost stands A. B. Park & Bro,, who have been in business a long, time, are well known and bave alarge trade.— J. Weston, successor to Gregg: & Schulze, has a fine room and is also doing a good business; their aggregate eales annually reach $85,000. : - J. R. Baker, the inventive geniusof the city, turns out tin ware and new inventions generally ; but this Aeavy Legisla‘ture béat him. He had juast invented a fish lamp—Dbest one ever made, and $3OO worth engaged — when heigot notice of the new fish law ;of course he quit. It was “fun for the fish but bad luck to gilmpag” o 0 e - o Banks, machine shops, and some other interests, I will leave for another time. ~ In the proféssions we have ten doctors, seven la\,wyérs, a dozen minigters, one dentist, ‘one professor, one postmaster, three politicians, two editors, and some insurance agents. ' - Rain . (IfT do not get “ whaled " for writjng this “description” of our city I may finish itsome time. ' . AMOS. P. 8.—1 omitted, not intentionally, the large and popular clething house of Engel & Co,, whoare doing a large business, also three jewelry stores, the news room, where presides the-inimitable Jeff ; also two large Agricultural depots, -and six mitliner shops. HOOFLAND'S GREEK OIL,

. © Hoofland’s German Bitters, 3 . A Bitters without i Alcoelol or Spirits of any kind, Is different from all others. It is composed of the pure juice or VITAL PRINCIPLE_ QF ROOTS, HERBS a\gl BARKS (or as medicins"y termed, extracts), the worthless or inert portions of ‘the ingredients not being used. Therefore, in one bottle of this Bitters there is contained as much medicinal virtue as will be found in several gallons of ordinary mixtures.— The Roots, &c., used in this Bitters are grown in Germany,-their vital principles extracted in that country by a scientific-Chemist and forwarded to the manufactery in this city, where they are coinpounded andbottled. Containing no spirituous ingredients, this Bitters is-free trom the objections urged against all others ; no desire for stimunlants can be induced from their use, they cannot make drunkaids, and cannot, under any circumstances, have any but | beneficial effect. . i

Was compounded for those not inelined to extreme bitters, and is. intended for use in cases when some alooholie stimulant is required in conneetion with the Tonio properties of the Bitters. The price of the Tonic is $1.50 per bottle, which many persens think toohigh. ‘They must take into gonsideration that the stimulant used is guaranteed to'be of a pure quality.
