' Men niay-.talk :filt business, how to manage it, -of the cash and credit system, -but to make-any business syccessful, it is absolutely necessary to. use 'printers’ ink in s6me way or otl:f,fl and the best and ' cheapest way 18 by advertising in & news‘paper. . The :newspaper is taken -home and read by the oj family, and then loaned to the neighbors, where it is read again. The merchant’s advertisement is tgzil kept before the public much longer than it is possible td' do any other way. Circulars are very seldom carried into the family circle—they-are picked up genérally by the first person’ that goes Into the yard, contents glanced at, 'sxen thrown -away. In many cases the husband or father picks it up, and lif it happeas to ‘tell of the bargains ffiered in dry goods or lady’s fancy goods, he sinksit deep Into “his pocket. With anewspaper advertise‘ment he cannot do this, for the ladies wdnt, and will read the paper, and if the pater familias fail to bring it bome, they ‘are not slow in asking for it. = After reading'the news, it is just as natural for a lady. to look over the advertiseffients as it is for her ‘to'eat,>and if she sees anything advertised that she needs and wants, she is sure to geh‘ifi some how, and pinetynine times out of a hindred she will go right to the house that advertises the arti- | cle for it.—New Albgnyt Ledger. " There is a great deal of truth embodied in the above, which entitles the suggestions contained therein to the serious considetation ot business men generally.— We desire to refer to this matter ‘more particularly by reason of the fact that six business fiems in this town recently con‘tracted each for $6 wdrth of advertising -ou the back of a patent medicine circu-, lar printed in Sandusky, Ohio. ~lf these firms had. procured the same kind of a circular at this office, the cost thereof would have amounted to just $24.75, or $11.25 less than they paid this Sandusky _ quack*medicine"ma'p, without having the value of the circular impaired by a patent medicine advertisement on one side of the sheet. “A majority of these victimized firms have never advertised in the Bax NER nor in‘any other paper, but it seemed to require very little persuasion to draw _§6 out of their pockets for the benefit ‘of Dr. Whittlesey in advertising his “Great Vegetable. Dispepsia Cure.” " In the dbove we merely allude to the cost of these” circulars, and the difference’ between Ligonier and Sandusky prices of ‘printing. Now a few words with regard 'to the value of the advertising itself. . A fajrsized business card can be inserted in the BANNER-at $6 for 6 months ; and we _contend ' that a half years’ advertising in this paper will be brought to the notice of & much larger number of readers than can possibly be expected in the case of Whittlesey’s Great Vegetable Dispepsia Cure circular, even though every copy be ‘properly and judiciously ‘distributed.— The remarks of the Ledger, above quoted, apply most admirably tothe case in point. - Let Do ong suppose that these remarks are intended as a'censure of the busjness firms who allowed thermselves to be duped by a patent medjcine druimmer, or that we begrudge the $36 which the latter took ‘from our midst. We refer toitchiefly for the purpose of demonstrating how easily someé people can be induced to expend money in causing their business cards to be printed on & sheet' of paper that will on]y be used for wrapping purposes, whilst it ~would require the persuasive eloquence of & Clay or Webster to convince these same persons that an advertisement in a news. paper can and does promote the interests of'a man engaged in business, - Our only aim is'to intimate that when you can hgve access o & legitimate advertising medium ' in your own' midst, avail yourself of its columns in ‘preference to a patent mediiciue circular ; or, if you ido eonclyde to “advertise throvgh circulars, don’t go to ‘Sandusky when you can ‘get the same | work done at home for $11.28 less.

SWITCHES AND CHIGNONS.—Tke recent revelations about §ute’—the dark, fibrous bark, resembling hemp—wherewith women endeavor cheaply to counterfeit the luxuriant heads of hair degi'éfi them by nature—have been Tegarded, no doubt, as merely sensational, or perhasps the products of some misogynist, but the doubters have no chance. The disgusting little borers that fill the fibers of the ‘“Jute’” plaut, whether used in massive chignons or long punches,' are causing a lively and by no mesns pleasant excitement in various quarters, finding their way to the heads of the harborers, they burrow until the scalp becomes raw, and inmany cases affect the whole nervous system and craze the brain. The. only remedy we know of ig to abandon the use of chignons, and svgitches altogether, and treat with “Barrett’s Vegetable Hair Restorative,” a thorough application of which according to'direction will soon supply the deficiencés of nature and give you a fine healthy, luxuriant head / of hair. Official Report of the Mansfield Trial:

The attention of the public is invit{‘ed to the’“t;ollowing exflrncts from thela OflLCinl report of the Great Ffl%‘ ;}- ‘Mans ,{ONio,/la'fie month of July, 1870, under the direction of the Ohio State o:ggtfi'ggg%&ltfigg' WeE . ' . - From the table it will be seen that the Buckeye not only bas the lightest average and the lightest extreme draft, but also that it runs with far greater steadiness and uniformity of draft, the dynamometer showing a much smaller range of vibration for it than for .Other machines ; and further that while the variation of draftin the average of all the machines .tested is SEVENTY-FIVE PER CENT. GREATER while cuttinf than: when drawn out of gear, in the BeNior Buckeye the increase of variation 7s less than twe refer cent., and that the VJ‘;zm'or Buck--eyé actually ran with greater steadiness and uniformity of drafé while cutting than when.out of gear—showing remarkable perfection of gearing and cutting apparatus, and consequent freedom from racking aud giving of parts, which i$ the secret of tbe great durability of the Buckeye. 1) Read the Following from the Official Report: ‘“ The following scale of merits had also been agreed upon by the State Board : i (%uality Of WORTR: oo g feeetoonionncaasc§ipioceccana-oronaspancnaenansassisPorfection......4o "2 Simplieity of Conglrachion. ... . i iiiiiiiiiieeiaeieeaanianinene A 0 eenn..lo | BOy g ee e e leim m ale el oo oee Pt L ees e B A esdess 1D 4 Ease oflgrafté do ......20 g Markot Priqeu.fal:pef-a8- bt fofe e dionesmegdennecionnniiniiandacvaronast i Q 0 L iloai B Faeility of Managément ... . ... .. ...l ... iiiiiiiiiininnnn... .dO DlO “In the trial with the dimamometer, the same team was used in'all of the tests, one of the committee managing the instrument, anqther‘driving the team, and a third taking the measurement.”” The results of the examination of mowers ate presented in the following table : |

A WARDS: *“Your Committee would respectfully recommend that the Premium Gold Medal for the best Mower be awarded to Aultman, Miller & Co., of .Akron, Ohio, for their machine known as the Buckeye Senior. | With the exception of the Buckeye Junior, made by the same arty, and which is the same Machine, except in size, No MacHINE EXAMINED did more perfect, worg,‘ is more simple in plan, or‘more accurate in its mechanism,;-none gave such evidence of durability; or was more managesble ; and'with the exception of‘the Junior, before mentioned, none had so light a draft or such quiet, easy, and uniform mation, In sSomé respects the Junior Buckeye would %e entitled to the preference, but your comméttee-%i‘é persuaded, from the mechanical principles involyed, and from pretty extensive observation, that machines as heavy as the Buckeye Senior are decidedly p:e&rablé as Mowers to the smaller machines.” ' R ol pmoaagies wd e Ji M.
