kel CGorrespendence of the Laporte Argus. - . _Letter from California, | . JizAspspußG, ©ar., Mareh 13, '7l. Dear Editor :—Since the publication in the Arcus of my letter of January 20th, I have been nearly overwhelmed with all sorts of questions,.in regard to this State _generally, and (o this locality particularly. I have come to the conclusion that ‘the Amaus is enjoying a pretty, extensive “circulation, and that this great thirst for "knowledge can be quenched .through its columris, better than in any other way ; indeed it would be & severe tax on the constitution and powers of, endurance of & modern member of Coqg;ens, tb answer the letters that I have received, all refefring to “your letter in the Laporte Araus.” ‘Mr. A., of Saco, away down'in the State of Maine, wishes to know whether “winter wheat can be grown where there is no winter 2 Wheat of better quality than any I had seen elsewhere is raised in abundancethere, yielding as high as eighty bushels per acre. Such cropsdo niot depend upon chance, but on the fertility of the soil and the industry and skill o’f_"iifi farmer. The crop is put in at any time from the first of September to the first of April—the earlier the wbetter the yield; in .quality there is little or no diffefence, it is all the same whether it be spring wheat sowed in the fall, or fall wheat sowed in the spring. Mr. 8., of Black Swamp, 0., after inform-

ing me that hiél_oéa)fty isunder water near{ly half the year, and not a drop'isto be had 4 blh_} rain-water stored in'cisterns, the other half, asks : “how is water with you? Do the people maké much age of it 2 Water is very plenty here,.in the rivers and lakes: in wells at an average depth of sixteen feet, all the time, and laying around loose _during the rainy season. Some people use it “for drinking purposes, diluted with whisky. The old forty-niners use it for medicine, and under‘: the direction f'ofi a

. physician “it is said to be-an excellent alterative. It hag beenm usec'l_in"s'ome in- . stances for washing the feet, instead of whisky, but is considered extra hazardous “and works a forfeiture of life insurance policy, unless recommended by a Qouncifl .of physicians. L | Mr. M., of Rolling Prairie, Ind., in“quites &g to “price of land, agricultural " products, cost of farming implements, la-

bor, ete., ete.’”? The best improved lands

in.the valley are held at .$lOO per acre and within eight or ter:l. miles, at about $6O. -' The desirable farming lands in this ‘vicinity are all improved. Farmg in the foothills and on the mountaing, suitable only foristock, fruit and vineyard purposes, rangg all the way from 'two to twenty dollars per acre. Wheat is worth '51,50, ‘corn 75 cents, barley 80 cents, oats 60 oents _an% potatoes $l,OO per bushel.— Girain ig raised here withont irrigation—not so in most localities. Farm hands com: ‘mand about twenty-five dollara per monb{x in winter, and thirty in summer, -in gold .or ‘silver coinm,. Aside from the advantages of climate, there is very little inducenient for any tne leave to Laporte county and get-

tle hers, or in any other place on the

earth. - This last sentence is intended to convey my' opinio‘n,_und I hope the rea&ors of the Araus will at least refrain froxh writing to me, in a very confidential manner, “asking for my honest opinion on that subject.: - o o il

~ Mr. F. Mo, of Pittsburg,’ Pa., inquires “what would be the probable effect of that ‘climate on an él(ierly _pérson - generally feeble in health, etc.,-ete. It would in all probability nenew his age:about 15 yenrsi; give him 4 strong inclination tq run, jump, 'gather bofiuet{b, -escort school: girl parties on' mountain climbing expeditions, gealogical and botani¢al researches. Y., asks, “what diseases do people, die of most ?”’ . There are no climatic diseases, unless the emigrant brings the germ of some disease already donsiderably developed. He will generally start in on the “high pressure,” ““‘broad gauge” two-forty mode of living -and working, without rest or recreation, following out his early notions of the necessity of ‘“making hay while the sun shi'n‘es,\u{t’[il at.the age of forty or ffty " years, he will go to his lodgings some " evening a little indisposed, apd next information of him will:be a funeral notice to

Wont you please tell me abotit those earthquakes? How do they make you feel? When are you to have another?, Where is the safest place to get? What are they like, apyhow ?”’— Eatrthquakes may be regarded as an excellent institution to kecp the State!from filling up too fast.> I would not adyise any oie' to come here just for the sake: of en-

They are notas much to be -“flgated as your thun_d%r storms, or a tornado of :such character as the. one that recently swept over St. Louis, neither of which are ever known here. The people get into the street pretty lively during the shaking, I suppose to see the ‘“stars fall,” a 8 they all declare they are not scared.— The sensation,l?r a very peculiar one, and .ot likely to be forgotten, They jostle a person aroud about a 8 my old friend Dr. Teegarden does when' he shakes hands.— .You get him to shake hands with you -when he:fils’&o‘, Bd ‘you will gel—‘-’u-; ter be able to recognize an earthquake

They are ‘different from the ‘ague, as the fever al: ways comes on during the shake. The vi'brntibng are governed by, certain laws, but I bhave never found any one ‘who ‘knows what those laws are. The motitn is per‘pendicular, horizontal, - diagonal, ‘crosswise and the vibrating way of the thing shaken. I havé spent a good deal of time ‘in calculating the. month, week and exact minute of the next shake in the latitude of California and Salt Lake City, ‘and have settled beyond the possibility of & doubt that the next one will occur just at the time that:no one is expecting it I£lam mot correct, “the money will be refunded at the door.” "As the immortal: Samuel Weller saidin the trial of Bardel vs. Pickwick, “Would any ‘gentleman like to ask ,&nym&ore questioné 9 “Yours truly,

Immortality of the Soul.

An eminent divine was once trying to teach a number. of clildrén that the soul would. live after they were dead.. They listened butevidently did not understand it; he was too abstract. Snatching his watch from his pocket, he said : o

- “James, what is that I -hold in my hand 9" ¢ :

“ A watch, Bir,‘;l “ A little clock,” says another. ;

Do youl all see it ?” S % Yeg, sir.” e 1L . “Very well; can any of you hear it tick 2 - All listen now.” . After'a pause, “ Yes, sizy we hear it.”

- He then took off the cise, an held the case 'in oné -hand and the watch in the other. ' 4 : ! # Now, -¢hildren, ivfllich‘is the watch ? You see there’ are two ‘which look like watches 27 B )

“ The little one, in your right_hand, Si‘l‘?” AR

“Very well; but how do you know that this'is the watch " ' . “ Because if ticks.”. : ; “Very well, again. Now I willlay the case aside — put it away, ‘there — down, down in my hat. Now let us sce if you can hear the watch tick” =

“Yes, gir, wehiear it,” exclaimed several ¢ ¥ v ! voices. | 4 3

“ Well, the watch can tick, and go, and keep time, you see, when the case is taken off and put away in my hat. Soitis with you, children ; your body is nothing but the case, the soul is inside. The cdse, the body, may be taken off and buried in the' ground, dnd the soul will live and thagk, just as well as the watch will go, :fia see, whei\_the case i off.” g

This niade it plain, and even the youngest went: home and told his mother that “his thoughts would tick after he was dead.” | |

We, who cherish with especial love associations of Catholic youth, because nothing can be more acceptable and agreeable to us, amid the great confnsion of the times and the snares of impious men, thah that youth, particularly should walk jealously in the way ofthe Lord and firmly adhere to christian: discipline. 'We could not, I say, beloved ehildren, read the noble declaration of your sentiments expressed in your letter of the Bth day of December last, without. being moved toward you with special sentiments of love. . For both your unshaken devotion . toward s and this Apostolic See, as you express it, altogether requires this of us, as well as the exalted feelings of faith and religion by which you express your abhorrence of the sacriligious crimes committed by the’ enemies of truth and Jjustice against-our rights and the rights of the 'Apostolic. See, and against the Holy Church, condemning with merited retrobation the impious deeds ot the tyrannieal rule of those who, by algned force and by all sort of deceit and fraud, have trampled upon our ciyil power and libetty. But, bzloved children, what especially gives us a great esteem for your virtue, and gains our special praise, is your eloquent declaration that you and all the -members of your sodality place your honor and glory in upholding and preserving firmly the ‘principles of religion.and justice which you. have received by inheritance. | This noble resolution, beloved children, keep' faithfully and steadfastly ; for, since the foundation of social order and prosperity in every form of government, but espceially ‘in that which exists among you, are to be based evidently on these principles, you know that the whole stability, happiness and honor of your country depend upon the same; "and that no others .deserve better of it than they who strive to preserve and promotc reverently the love of justice, pure merality and religion. Alcohol or Spirits-of any kind, & ) : B : 4 Is différent from all others. It is composed of the pure juice or VITAL PRINCIPLE OF ROOTS, HERBS and BARKS (or as medicinally termed, extracts), the worthless or inert portions of the ingredients not, being used. Therefore, in one bottle of this Bitters thers is contained as much medicinal virtue as will be found in several gallons of ordinary mixtures,— The Roots, &c., used in this Bitters are grown in Germany, their vital princifles extracted in- that country by-a scientific Chemist and forwarded to the manufactery in this city, where they are compound‘ed andbottled. Containing no spiritnous ingredients, this Bitters is free trom the objections urged against all others ; no ‘desire for stimnlantg can be induced from their use, they cannot make!drunka:ds,’ and cannot, under any circumstances, bave any but beneficial effect.

Hoofland’s German Tonic.

Was compounded for those not inclined to extreme bitters, and is intended for use in cases when some alcoholie stimulant is required in connection with the Tonic properties of the Bitters. : Each bottle of the Tonic contains one bottle of the Bitters, combined with pure SANTA CRUZ RUM, and flavored in such a manner that the extreme bitterness of the Bitters is overcome forming a preparation that is highty agreeable and Plemnt to.the palate, and containing the medicinal virtue of the Bitters. The price of the Tonic is $1.50 per bottle, which many persons think too h‘igh. They must take into consideration that the -stimulant used is guaranteed to be of a pure quality. A poor article could be furnished at a cheaper price, but is it not betterto pay a little more and have & good article? A medjginal preparation should contain none but the best ingredients, and they who expect to obtain a cheap compound will most certainly be cheated.,
