: sty Communicated. = : Hiail! Daniel Voorheen! ; MR. EpiTor :—ln a late number of the BANNER [ notice an outline of a bill, re ferred to the committee on Public Lands, by Mr. Voorhees, for the ben«fit of disabled roldiers and sailors, which will be hailed with joy and gladness on its pass#ge by-a large number of our country’s veterans. = And why should uot this act of simple j stice be done to these brave “boys, the defendere of our country? ~ While Radicalism in its present power is' plundering the people's treasury, it seems that in Lheir greed they have tor -gotten already how ani by what means they were placed in their present pesition, | These Radicals entirely cverlock’or fuil to see haw by a simple act of justice such‘ . a one a 8 proposed by Mr. Voorhees would be a blesging to these poor fellows. . T an: aware that many promises were made to them, and ten years is full time enough to reveal the perfortance of ‘at least a pnrti‘f»n of what was to be done| for the l soldier, : !
I cannot discern what possible objec tion canybe brought to bear against this provision or foresight of Mr. Voorhees.— The disabled soldicr cannot avail himself of the homebtead act (with its additional grant of those alternate sectiuns of $2.50 land) or any other in fact, and he remnins, 80 far as the avails'are concerned, on a par with the citizen. But Mr. Voorhees pro poses to help him out. And we are not to forget thet this aid comes from g man of the opposite party. '
It does really sppear to me that the Republican party have forgotten not only their pramises’ in many instances to the soldier, but their duty as well. ' So'in tently are they grasping and quarreling for the gpoils of «ffice tfiat they are leaving all thuse who by any means are una ble to help themselves in the hands of the enemy to care for, and [ have no doubt thut thousands are thus dropping out of the Republican ranks yearly. ‘ I bave but one objection to these resnlutions -of Mr. Voorhees, i. e, that they don't open quite wide enough to admit all the soldiers who ought to bave such benefit. . There are many.outside of those disabled in actual service who are just as needy and probably deserving enough.— Look over‘the broad land, and jnu will see) gcores of soldiers who have served faithfully their term of eulistment, but have come back to find their homes brok en up; in a manner bechme desolate by «fl ction and ln‘gl in their families ; and have met with pecuniary losses also They have hadtp refit as it were, and. comrménce life anew.” Now they are working and toiling to maintain a large family as best they can. "Many are suffering with dis ease contracted by exposure in the army and not in a macner ahle to make a claim | sufficiently clear (technically) to procu e‘ # pension, and too poor in- pocket to fir up and move their families to where they 1 can enter ‘their homestead. Thus they must go \.nrvqui's’ed, and the homestead with its $2.80 preference to the soldier, is to. them a blank.! While it would be no robbery to the government, it would 'w‘ no more than just -tl;'nt some plan should be devised by which they would receive the price of such~lands, at least in some other form: L Should Mr. Voorhees succeed in rendering such aid to poor, crippled and disabled soldiers, whose prospects in life have beem thus blasted by the late cinel rebellion, “the . blessings of ten thousand swelling hearta of men, women and chil I dren will be his reward. A SOLDIER.
