LIeoNIER, for the past two weeks, has been the scene of much excitement. First, we had a big show, then the base-ball tournament, the fair, withall its attendant side-shows, dances, fights, &e., Schuyler! Coltax, Vice President of the United States, making a radical stump speech for Billy Williams, and last, though not least-—judging from the erowds of people it attracted — Dr. Hamlin’s Wizard Oil Chiariot and nocturnal open air concerts. On‘ Monday night Dr.. Farrand, an old companion of the famous Kit Carson, was posted to lecture in the town hall. The Dr./has been with Mr. Carson in most of hig' mountain exploits tor 21 years, and was himself scalped by the Indjans, and only escaped 'with his life by the timely intercession of his friends. . DBut, on account of the Wizard oil, the Dr. had no audience. The historical lecture, even upon the exeiting and interesting subject had no attraction for people of Ligonier 80 long as there was a humbug to attract them. -

Our PupLic Scuoor, commenced’on Monday last, with an entire new corps of teachers, except in the Primary department, which flock is still herded by Miss M. A: Beach, who gave general satisfaction last term. - The Principal department i 3 taught by Miss Ida Loomis, of Mich. ; the Grammar department by Mr. John H, Hoffman ; the Intermediate, by Miss Dora Bates, and the school north of thic river by Miss Selby. The new arfangement, in part, is an experiment, but if the several teachers will maintain the rigid discipline and thorough manner of instruction that was exercised by our teachers of last term, they will succed well. Weare informed that they all come well reccommended: as teachers of experiencé and ability, and we hope that the school trustees and all the patrons of . the school will do their duty, which, with the judicious efforts of the teachers, never tails of success. We will, at our earliest convenience, visit the school and give such a report as it merits,

~ Tuere are two lawyers aspiring to the same Judgeship in the southern.portion of this State. Both are Republicans, though one is running on a ‘reform ticket. The other day. a friend to the ‘ieform’ met a former Rushvilliaa in Indianapolis, and asked him if hé knew anything against C., the simon-pure Republican candidate. “Why don’t you dig up that indictment against him at Rashville for perjury?” said the gentleman applied to. “ Ob, that wouldn’t do,” was the reply, “because there is an indictment against our man at Greensburg for perjury.” And so it was concluded to let the two candidates fight i 5 out on a high-toned level, withont descending to personalities. i

'DEMOCRATIC PAPERS SHOULD BE CIRCULATED, : From the Ft. Wayne Democrat, ; Since the day that the Government was organized there never has been a period of time when it was more imperious1y necessary¥hat Democratic papers sho'ld be widely circulated than at present ; and were it not for the fact that we are somewhat inferested in their general dissemination, in a p‘ecum'arg( point of view, at present, we should certainly insist upon’ it, that no expense should be spared to place a good, sound, and consistent Democratic sheet in the hands of every voter in every county within thie limits ot this and other States, previous to the ensuing election. As it is we ‘will only venture to advise that it shall be done in our own distriet and State so far as ‘practicable. The ensning Presidential contest will certainly 'be the most important one, to the people, that has ever yet taken place gince the formation of the Federal Union, and every yoter should be prepared to meet the issues that will be presented between this and the election day in a proper manner. It is an imperative duty that every voter shall be posted as to the facts involved, and that sound, constitutional doctrines shall be placed before them, in a form to be understodd ; and this can be done in no manner or at less expense than thirdugh the columns of a sound and reliable Democratic newspaper.

There are but few men of usual discernment, who cannot see that in almost every political campaign, it is Printer’s Ink,and not talk, that does the work. One good newspaper in each family ina county, district, or Btate, will do more towards enlightening the minds of the people and disseminating corrcct principles, than all the stump oratorsand political declaimers in Cliristeridom. -7 00k

If the money- that is yearly expended in getting up mass meetings and paying speakers, horse hire, &e., was appropriated to paying for good papers for distribution among the people, more good would be done than most people suppose ; ‘and, our belief is, that a change in this respect would be altogether proper and advisable. "Indee'd',/'the conclusive proofs that we have had in years past, of the truth. of what we have above sdid, are such asto confirnrus in the belief that one good Democratic paper will do more to disseminate Democratic principles and fix the: importance of maintaining them firmly in the minds'of the people, than can be done by any orator, however eloquent he may be. - If this be true, as we believe it is, how very necessary it is that good Democratic papers shall be circulated in every county, from center to circum-. ference! Ts it, then, not.altogether important that Democrats, in every locality, shall sce to it that good papers are in the hands of every voter in’due season ? | May we not hope that the st‘quifigi Democracy of this county, district and State (in view of the important issues now pending) will take counsel 1n scason ?— Will they not follow the example set by their Rc;iublicpn adversaries— give a lideral patronage to such presses as sustain, advocate, and defend” their rights and interests? If they conclude to do 80, now is the time when they should be at work. They should be up and doing from this time until the election; and their good work will be rewarded in this life, and the life to come.

The work of redemption may be slow, but it is cortainrfi; nn‘d;' sconer or later, it will be finished. The great work will be done. Democracy, like “truth, crashed to earth, will rise again.” It is as fixed and eternal as Deity, and can no more be destroyed, crushed out, 6r annihilated than the mighty riversof the earth can be dried up, or the great luminaries of the heavens blotted out. Take courage, friends, everywhere; push on the great Democratic column, and our beloved coun: try will again prosper and yourselves be made to rejoice in your salvation from tyranuy and exorbitant taxation. Spread the documents ; give the people light and knowledge, and all will yet be well. ;
