T R R B S T S e T TP AARE eaERR RO St o T MONTANA CORRESPONDENCE : Brackroor, MONTANA, Aug. 27, 2870. ‘ Ensror Baxner:—The climate of Montana is cold—we beinglegs than two degrees south: of the British line—but like all other mountai;ious countries the temperature depends much on the locality and altitude. For instance, in 'this town we had a fall of snow Lwo feet in depth in June, and twice during the present month enough has fallen.to whiten the ground, whilst down in the valleys, only a few miles distant, snow geldomilies on the ground but a few days after falling, even in mid winter. : - There are millions of acres of good prafrie lands in this Territory yet to be preempted and improved that will produce bountiful crops of wheat, barley, oats and all kinds of vegetables. And taking it all together, uplands and valleys, it is the best and most extensive grazing country I ever saw. S < s

When the Northern Pacific Railroad is completed, say three years from this time, the shipments o'»f’gmiu', flour and cattle will be heavy. Tbe're‘ are good opportunities for farmers if they will come with the intention of making this Territory their permanent home and taking advantage of its future growth and advancemenl: : - The Chinese are coming in here in large numbers, and we are earnestly praying Congress to relieve ug from the nuisance. They are no benefit to the country, but on the contrary a curse. They will never becoine citizens becausel they ‘will not renbu_nce their. habits, their religion and their fealty to. their nafive land for the prii(ri}ege of voting. It cost one of them to live about one-fourth the amount it takes to support a white man ; c'onsequenl'iy, they labor for almost nothing, and are employed tothe exclusion of white labor. They invest no money in real estate or permanent improvements, which would tend to benefit and build up the country. They have no families to support, for ninty-nine of every hundred of their females brought over here find homes in houses of ill fame, and niheteen-‘twen;ietbs’ of their males are slaves, - The rich Chinese companies that import and own them have all the benefiis

of their labor. Our own .people are not allowed to hold slaves, but i these snuff colored barbarians are permitted to own and work them too, in direct violation of the laws of the land. - Is it right ? The Placer Mines have produced m.ore gold this year than last because there has been a greater supply of water for 'mining purposes. Tlie new mines of Cedar Creek, discovered last winter, are {urning ouf well. About 2,000 men find employment there at present, building, making roads, opening and working claims, ete. etc. The shipment of gold from that place is quite large for a new camp. -+ The scarcily of women in this Territory is a thing much to be deplored. Marriagable ladies are few and command a premium. Every one, whether she be a Miss in ghort dresses, an old maid or widow, has at least a dozen m'-_dent admirers.. Theréfore, your correspondent, a bachelor, on the shady side of sixty, stands no better chance of committing matrimony than Brigham .Young’. does of going to heaven.: Send out a regiment of your rosy-cheeked Hoosier girls, and I will see that they are properly received and disposed of. o esiraly youes,. - Borr, T T R

. * A DiaßopicaL DEEp.—On Sunday night last gome unhung scoundrel broke into the stable of Mr. Wm. Blakeman, of this city, and took therefrom a valuable horse. The loss was discovered early Monday morn- . ing and it was at once supposed that the | animal had been stolen and spirited away. Steps were at. once taken: to overtake the thief, Parties were despatched to various sections of the surrounding conutry but, the most dilligent search for two days failed to discover any traces of the lost property. Finally all parties returned to thiggity and determined to advertise and . ofl’e‘l, liberal reward for the recovery of the property.. This was scarcely done be‘qu"e a gentleman came in from some two or three miles in the country and brought the intelligence that a horse had been found dead in a grove near his house.— ~Mf. Blakeman at once repaired to the spot and found to his surprise that the dead horse was surely the oné he had lost. Upon. investigation it was found that the. animal’s throat had been.cut in two places, - and that he had bled to death. It appears ' that the the villain took the horse from the stable and rode him to the woods where he , tied'him:to a tree and cut his throat, In his struggles the horse broke loose but died from the loss of blood and was found , near the place where he was hitched. This is one of the most singular and diabolical acts we have ever been called upon ~ to chronicle. ! Mr. Blakeman is a hard-working, hon- . est, and upright man, highly respected by every good citizen, and totally ignorant of having an enemy in the world. Neither ‘ himself or his family have any knowledge ~of the least enmity held toward them by any living being. The act seems to have ~ been done without any provocation. The horse was valued at about $175, and was used for draying.—Laporte Argus. - ~ e | ‘ : RAILROAD ACCIDENT.~-An accident which -~ resulted in the loss of a life, occurred on ~ the railroad at the Denslow bridge, two miles west of this place, last Thursday evening. ‘A brakesman on the freight train which passes here, going east at 7:25 | P. M., was missed from the train when it reached Elkhart, and he was known positively to havé been on the cars at South Bend. The fact was telegraphed to South - Bend, together with the supposition ‘that ~ he might have fallen from the train between that place and Mishawaks. From Emily Faithfuls London Letter, July 25. . - One working-man’s wife has just given .a signal' proof of capacity to sympathize beaily o Rerhusbond i, o 4o id him by the practical use of |speech andl pen. A strike at the Blochairn Iron Works last April paralyzed the trade for six weeks. The leading peace-maker be tween masters and men, in a dispute which had closed about four hundred fur naces, was & Mr. Robert Kane, who was fortunate enough to be most efficiently seconded in his efforts by his wife.— About a fortnight since a testimonial was presented to Mr. and Mrs. Kane by the iron-workers of the northern counties.— On this occasion Mrs. Kane remarked that she did not believe in presen‘ations or tes timonials, and that when & man has borne wrath and calumny without even -flinching from the path of duty we ought to be very careful lest wwe tempt him co be unfaithful tohis trust by spoiling him with too much kindness. I wish I had space to give you'a full account of Mrs. Kane's eloquent speech, in which she describes how the spirit of Ged seemed to enter the heart of the nation, and. the dark and stormy days arose which brought desolation into their own home; and because Mr. Kane had sought to settle the dirference between masbers and workmen he was accused of being a fire-brand, and passed through a season of great tribulation, whichis recounted by his wife in strong, forcible language. Nor is she less pathetic when she tells of the passing away of the storm, and the position herhusband has gained for his advocacy of reconcili;\tion and arbitration. And she concludes by telling her hearers to try and respect each other more, and to be true to each other, and yet to remember that masters have claims and rights also. — Why should their class, she asks, be leck oned the lowest in the ranksof workmen? Not hecause it is the poorest, but because more of the iron-workers' mosey - goes for 'strong “drink than fromi any other branch of industry. But,” she adds, “we have the power to do better, if we will it.” What man. could wish for a better helpmeet, and what woman has better deserved a testimonial ? | e ——— -W—--4 . Lomng Branch Miseries. The miseries endured by pleasure seekers at the sea-side this hot weather are graphically set forth by a correspondent of the Hiening Post, writing from Long Branch. Hesays! The poor wretehes, for five dollars a day, occupied 4. miserable little room with beds like those in & hospital ward, and a great scarcity of water to wash in. They had pleniy of towels and an overpowering display of gaslight. At the table, after waiting, they obtained good food, but only through a stratagein unworthy of upright men; for they beforehand found out the name of the waiter and accosted him familiarly, asking him it ke did not remember them at Saratoga; whereat he \grin‘ned, and with fond hope: of fees ministered unto them. But that night! If it had been allowable to sleep on the sea sands, slumber might have visited their eyelids ; but being miserable conventional creatures, they thought they must needs sleep in a bed. The room had been thoroughly heated during the recent hot days, and with its tiny little .peep-hole of a window could not get cool. They tossed miserably about, and as they were thrust two or three in a room they held hot converse. I think I have already remarked that it had been a hot day. ' “I,” said one, “live in New York.— Alas! Would I were in my native gut-

ters.” onipo “I, murmered another, ".\ivi[éi'ng his brow with his pillow case, “I havé a home & big, spacious room with three great Win’dnwé and a door epening on & cool entry. Why am I not there now?” . “I,” teebly gasped a third, “I, too, in the city have a treasure in a comierlm_use overlooking a park. I bave ice-water to drink. I have ice-cream before going to bed. . I do not sleep next to the roof at home.” Then he fell back fainting. ~ “Hark I” ejaculated another, who was evidently | delirious, “methinks I- liea‘rd the cool Croton dashing into my bathtab. And ah! how refreshing the patter of the sbhower-bath 1” : g

So they each babbled of home ; and after many turnings they arose at daylight fluffy and hot, and tyok the first train for the first New York boat. THERE are forty persons in South Bend worth .over $50,000, ten worth over $BO,000 and four worth $lOO,OOO or more.—. The wealthiest family (man and wife) figures up $lBO,OOO. _ Uil ——— e — Ix consequence of low water many of the factories at South Bend ‘and Mishawaka have had to suspend work. | ie - : A company at Benton Harbor has been putting up 5,000 cans of green corn per day. - j :
