. Old Settiers’ Meetings. Pursuant to a call made by a previous mecting, the old scttlers of this section of country assembled in Kann’s Hall on the ‘afternoon of Friday, the 16th inst. As the president of the ‘previous meeting was absent, Judge Blackman, of Noble county was calléd to the chair, upon the taking of which he made a few appropriate remarks. Mr. J:C. Stewart acted as Secretary. \ ! Col. John Jackson, Conrad Smith, Sen., and Wm. Simpson, of Elkhart county, ‘being present, theigj were invited to take seats with the presiding officer on the platform. Among those present, we noticed Ira Jackson and Conrad Smith, Jr., also of Elkbart county, and Col. William Denny, Nelson Prentiss, Ira Tibbitt, Edwin ,Randall, A. Pancake, Henry Hostetter, Allen D. Hostetter, Christian Barhan, {saac Cavin, Joseph Teal, Robert Curl, Matthias Marker, Ad. Diugman, William Crispell, Aaron Bouse, Jonas Bowman, W.IL fienny, W. N. Voris, Jacob Stage, Washington Cavin, Joel Vandertord, J. M. Cur}, Henry Engle, Lucius Bowman, Geo. Teal, J. Wolf, and many others of this county whose names we- have forgotten.
Short specches were made by A. Pancake, I. Tibbitts and Isaac Cavin, all of whom recited some pleasing incident of the olden time. Col. Jackson was then called for and came forward amidst a very varm greeting, when he presented a sketch which was read. The sketch will be published in pur next issue. After the reading, Nelsan Prentiss followed with a stirring speech to the old settlers which was enthusiastically received, and at. times brought tears to the eyes of the old settlers, and at other times many a hearty laugh greeted his humorous “ musketo ” story on his Rochester bare-footed friend,; and his sleigh-ride yarn. But the writer does not think it fair for Nelson to tell ‘his side of the Pancake story without giving the “ gal,” who happened to be pres | ent, a chance to be heard. I\irl Tibbitt followed with his courvflé%se story, and then came Judge Randall with a nice but brief speech. Henry Engle was the first Coroner of Noble county, (that was before Fred. Acus’ time) and as Deputy under’ Sheriff James Hostetter, summoned some of the first juries of this couuty.. He, among all. the, rest, complained of the scarcity of girls during the early settlement of the county and said he bad to go out of the county sparking, and right here he related a sparking story in which the writer of this failed tc sce what became of the girl-—perhaps Mrs. Engle can tell us. He closed by laying AAsomcthing at therdoor of our fricud Dave Bourie, which we hope his wife never saw. Isaac ' Cavin was recalled and made a few very satisfactory remarks. Judge Prentiss sug--gested that the old matrons have a say in _this méeting, hoping of course they would “not be personal, but as it was getting late, they all declined;. and the meeting adjourned to meet the first Saturday of June next,’in Wawaka., ; ; ' RE UNION AT GOSHEN, . .
