- THE last week’s issue ‘of the Kendallville Standard makes mention that a ‘paragraph is going the rounds of the papers ! that an old settlers’ meeting will be held at Ligonier, on the 18th of September, and . asks by what authority? For the information of all interested we will.say that the day appointed for the meeting is the 16tk day of September, and that the authority is Gideon Schlotterback, presi dent, and Jas. C. Stewart, secretary, officers of a meeting of old settlers held at ‘Ligonier, on June 11th. It is earnestly _hoped that the papers of Noble, Steuben, DeKalb, Elkbart, LaGrange, and Whitley counties will give it a conspicuous notice. r : : T e Orp SeETTLERS MEETING.—AIII persons, and especially all old settlers, arc requested to bear in mind that Friday September 16th is the day appointed for a grand re-union of all old settlers of Noble, Steuben, DeKalb, Whitley, Elkhart, and LaGrange counties. A grand basket din ner will be preparcd, after which interesting reminisconces of the old time will be the order of exercises. All are cordially invited to be present and participate.— The papers of the above named. counties are requested to again give notice. " ————r— Tur Kendallville Standard says that a little girl, six years of age, daughter of Mr. Phelps, of that eity, was burned to death on Friday, August 26th. She and her little brother were at home alone, and: in imitation of her mother, started a fire in the stove with kerosene, but left the- - sitting on the stove. It soon became heated and burst, scattering the oil over the little girl, which immediately ignited and burned her so severely before assistance was rendered, that she dicd in two or three hours. it \ - ee —— ; Tue LaGrange Standard and other radical papers, in order to reconcile their po - litical followers to the high tariff policy’ of Billy Williams, labor to show that his sentiments are nearly in accord with tlic resolutions on that subject adopted by the _Eindallvi'llc convention. If these papers can make the people believe that Williams endorses the democratic policy of a revenue tariff, it will be the only inducement they could hold out for true western men to support him.

THe success of advertising depends to a very great degree upon the skill of the advertiser in presenting the subject in such style and space as cannot fail to attract attention, which is the first object to be attained, but 1t depends in & much greater degree upon the selection of the best medium toaeach those whom it is desired to influence. i 't The Demeoerncy of Ohio. g . The Ohio Democracy are making prearations for a brilliant canvass for the approaching fall election. The papers in that State are full ot confidence, and they have good’ reaspn for entertaining high hopes. The nominations for Congress thus far embrace men of the %decided talent, and in many cases men who have heretofore achieved a wide reputation.— The Ohio Statesman says that General Denver will redeem the Sixth District from Radieal ism, as wiil Lewis D. Campbell the Third, McKiuncy the Fourth, Jewett the Seventh, Hubbell the Eighth, and Critchficld “the Fourteenth, and, if we mistake not, Cartwright the Fifteenth. In the Fifth District Lamison will in“-‘ crease the majority of Mungen (4,846), great as it was two years since. Dic}{cn son, in the Ninth, will fully sustan his majority of 1,645, which he received over Gibson. Van Trump in the Twelfth, will beat his old” majority, which two years since, was 4,913, while Morgan, in the Thirteenth, will increase Lis. majority to nearly three thousand. It was 1,634 two years ago. < o The excellence of the nominations—the dctef;mination of the people to introduce reform and lessen taxation, and to punish thé men whose disregard of the people prompted them to donate to railroad directors the lands of the people, will ena. ble the Democracy to send a decided ma jority of honest men from Ohio fo Congress. o , :

We regret to learn that James C. Stewart, Esq., received and accepted a nomina tion from the Démocratic Convention at Albion, on Saturday last, for the office of County Auditor. Mr. S. has always been a sound and reliable Republican.— He has at different times been a candidate before Republican Conventions for a position on the county ticket,,but was crowded off to give place to thi?"soldier clement. IHe was a candidate for Auditor before “the Republican Convention and failed ; then in one week after,. became the nominee of the Democratic party for the same office. This is simply a trick of the enemy to destroy a respectable and useful Republican, and to distract and destroy the Republican party in Noble county. We: are truly sorry that so good a man as 'Squire Stewart should be caught in such a trap.— Kendallville Standard. ; :
"'When it is known that before ‘the day of the Convention, Mr. Stewart had determined to forsake the court-house clique and support the nominees of the Demo: cratic County poxlvcntion, the above re-
marks in lgelntiéu to his nomination being a “trick of the enemy,” fall to the ground without effect. :

Should there be no Democratic paper established in this place, during the present campaign, we trust both wings of that party will feelatliberty to avail themselves of such favors as it may ‘be in our power to confer upon them in the way of making local appointments for speaking, &c,, &e. -We do not understand that our principles, or the interest of our party, demand churlish-‘conduct on"our part in such matters. If there was more real principle exhibited by political parties, and less selfishness, it would be better for the people and of advantage to the eoun: try.— Lagrange -‘Standard. : i

The Demoeracy of New England and the High Tariff. ;
~The democracy of New En land, although located within the circFe of influence of the great mill owners and manufacturers,do' not hesitate to denounce the robbery of the people in the shape of a high protective tariff. At the democratic convention in Maine they adopted, among others, these resolutions : ey * “Resolved, That the tariff for protection is mainly for the benefit of the wealthy and the monopolists ; that free trade is the right of the people. : o “Resolved, That we invite the thoughtful consideration of ‘tlie people of Maine, ‘with whom ship-building and freighting have heretofore ‘been successful pursuits, to the fact that 'the seaboard of Maine languishes' and daily “grows poorer, because of vexations and the refusal of the Republican Administration to afford adequate legislation.” I 2 ; 2 e . 825.00 Reward.
