" CoRrPORATION TAxES,—At the regular. meeting of the Town Couneil; on August 26th, the Clerk presented the tax duplieate of the town of Ligonier for this yeas, based upon a levy of 30 cents on every $lOO valuation of taxable property, and 25 cents poll tax. . ! '

Total delinquent tax. .. ...$1,163.78 Total amount of tax on the daplicate and now due.......... 52,363.64 A warrant was issued to the Marshal, commanding him to collect the tax of 1870, together with all the delinquencies, within ninety days, and to pay the same to the Treastrer. From the above statement it will be seen that many of our citizens have not paid theiy corporation tax for jeeo and former years. Whether it is from negleet of the Marshal or oth erwise, we know not, bat ‘hope that in the future he may exercise due diligence in collecting, and ev#y citizen of Ligos nier will pay their taxes promptly and cheerfully, 'The levy this year is only 30 cents on -every $lOO, and it would seem like disloyalty to refuse to pay so small a tax for what we aro all immediately interested. We hope our Clerk will be able to give us a more commendable statement on this matter in the tuture. - e — . Tae CouNty FAIR. — The people of this county should not forget the near approach ‘of the time for holding the annual county fair, The managers are busilyat work perfecting the necessary arrangements, and will spare no labor to make every provision for the comfort and conveniencé of exhibitors and visitors.— Meanwhile, our farmers, mechanics, and citizens generally, should be at work preparing their articles for exhibition. — Stock of all kinds, machinery, products of the farm and dairy, domestic manufactures, fancy articles, etc., should be got ready.. There must be a division of the labor between the officers and the people, if we would have a fair that will be attractive and remunerative, and at the same time be an index to the growth and prosperity of the county. ——— | TaEk Circus.—lt is unnecessary for us to call attention to the advertisement of the great European Circus, to be found in another column. The Deiroit papers speak in terms of very high praise of the performances of this Company, and the strict. manner in which its busingss'is conducted This is the first visit of this troupe to this section in eight years, its time heretofore being exclusively occupied in giving exhibitions in the East.—/ There are connected with this mammoth institution 125 people and 145 Borses, — They pride themselves particularly on their street parade, giving an open exhibition that is worth going miles to see..— Two performances will be given in this place, on Monday, Sept. 12th, at 214 and 8 o'clock p. M., and also at Kendallville on the following Tuesday, at the same hours. -+ S !

'~ MR. L, ScHLoss has now got fairly settled down to business in his new commodious brick building. The front portion is occupied as a grocery and provision store, in which he keeps a general assortment of sugars, teas, coffees, spices, candies, fruits, etc., fresh from the eastern market. He has gone to considerable expense ‘and trouble in fitting up this room, as well as in partitioning off a handsome bar in the back portion, At the bar may be found a large variety of choice wines and liquors, while the brands of cigars kept on hand are always of the best. The room looks remarkably neat, and invites the attention of the public, ;

. T European war excitement is still intense. Nancy has been well fortified by the Germans, and there is danger of the French army becoming demoralized, owing to thescarcity of supplies ; all because Wm @mw, at Kendallville, 'didn’t bive the job of furnishing them with groceries and provisions. Bill has the biggest, and best grocery in that town, and sells CHeaper than the chegpest. Take your produce there. i

Trg State election thié fall comes on the 11th of October, and asto which party will succeed there is much conflict of authority, but there seems to'bé no dis puting the fact that the best place to buy groceries is at the gld_ggliable storg; of George C. Rome City, June 20th, 1870.* ———— O i Akerman on Georgina. ; Mr. Attorney General Akerman has delivered a written opinion upon the political situation in Georgia, which we venture to say is unrivaled in the productions of the department over which he presides. . ' ‘ i The point at- which Akerman would seem to be driving is to determine wheth.! eor there ought to be an election in Geor-' gia this fall. In the first two columns of his wordy harangue he argues stoutly that the Constitution and laws of the United : States, and she. Constitution and laws of Georgia; explicitly Trequire that such an election should :be held. In the next half columti Tie goes on to prove that these documents leave the matter very much in doubt. Anudiin the final balf column he gives the Democrats distiactly to understand that if the Republicans should not only refuse to hold an election, but should even passa law extending |the’ term of the present Republican Legisla- | ture two years more, and two years longer than was originally contemplated by anybody, then the Democrats might regard themselves served just 'right; for they acted very scandalously in turning the negroes out 'of the Legislature, and in carrying the State against General Grant at the Presidential election. !

~ Having got the matter into this muddle, our model Attorney General then falls back upon' his first -position, and insists that there ought to be an election this very autumn; and he winds up by recommending that onec be.held late in Db/ 14, : ‘Shedld- so great a calamity happen to Grant’s administration as the resignation or death of Akerman, there is but one man who could fill his place—of course, we mean Jack Bunsby.—New ¥ork Sun.

Jefl'erson‘ll)avls’ Hope in the Future. Jeff. Davis ‘paid a visit Tast week to Lookout Mountain, his first visit since, as President of the Confederacy, he went up with Bragg to look at Gen. Rosecrans’ army on the plain below. On returning to Chattanooga he was serenaded. When he appeared he was introduced as “ Hon. Jefferson Davis,” and spoke as. follows:

My friends, it affects me/from the bottom of my heart to receive this demonstration of your kindly feeling toward me. I had retired in a double sense, for the night and’ from public life.” Tn view of the past, no man can blame me for my deter mination to let those who have power dictate how thecountry shall be governed. But, standing here to-night upon the sa cred soil of Ténnessee, I will say to you that I wish you all the prosperity that is possible. Looking back upon the past and forward to the future, I can see noth ing that should taigt your homor. It is not the part'of brave men ta brood over the sorrows of the past, but rather to look forward with bright hopes for the future, You have as brave.and high minded a people as can be found, and as noble women as live on earth, and I wish you all the happiness and prosperity that jis in human life‘t? enjoy. Again I thank you for this marifestation of vour kindness.
