They bhave some right to expect this, since the pardon of Beattie and the 125 others. Just prior to the last State 2lection, Major W. A. Smith, the present Johnson county candidate for the Scnate from ‘Alamance, ufi& co proprietor of the Standard establisimént, visited the jails along the line of thi& N. C. Railroad, and bailed out the lelnn}nf the leagues to give them a chanee to vote. The recent murder ofStephens in Uasx‘_cll, we verily believe, was perpetrated by members of the league, dnd, we predict that it will be so found, should the facts in regard to that horrid aftair ever be developed. We do net make the prediction vaguely, dr without what we believe to be good gréunds. ; There is a moral’ conviction on the mind of the public that the thousand actsof arson and burglary that have startled the various sections of the State, the burning at Henderson, in Wake, larnett, Casweil, and other connties ' —the meditated burning of Washington, and many other similar outrages, which have been committed on (uiet, peaceable and inoffensive citizens; are the work of members of that. secret, oath-bound association: known as Jthe League, of which the Governor is.r was the President. - But the Leagues, bad as they are, have not been the authors of all the outrages that have blackened the records of our State. - The organization of the ‘Leagues, and the mischief performed by the members, naturally led to the or:: ganization, or, at least, to the local combinations of parties of another but equally illegal character, and these organizations have stained the chronicles of our good old State with an/almost daily record of some crime or outrage. These things have gone on until no man fecls that he ‘has any security for his life or property. ‘The Leaguers commit an outrage and the Ku-Klux retaliate; or the Ku-Klux commit an outrage and the Leaguers retaliate; and so we progress towards;that accursed climax of from bad to worse, untik no one c¢an see what the end will be. _

The Reauction. i The House of Representatives has mag- | nanimously voted to reduce the income tax from five to threc per cent. and ex- | empt $2,000 instead of $l,OOO, as hereto-. fore, . There was a proposition before the’ | Housé to abolish the tax entirely, .and was supported by such Radicals as Morrell and Kelley, who are large incom payers? but the proposition failed by a (iecidegd majority, The working man would!like to understand how it is that (fongress reduces the tax on a class of persons more able to pay taxation, and at the same time make no deduction upen such articles of necessity as sugar, tea, coffee and every article used in family consumption. Those who areable to pay are relieved from their obligaticns to pay, but those who are compelled to labor for . their daily bread are not the subjects for “ legislative consideration. There id no let . up in the greed and avarice of the government in its dishonest and discriminating system of taxation, and that class which'is almost unrepresented in Congress, is made to bear the burthens of direct taxation; The monied power of New England shapes and controls our Congressional legislation, and ‘until the power of that influence is broken and destroyed, no other condition of affairs. can be’ expected.~Why reduce the tax on incomes and at the same time continue tlie tax on every ar ticle of economical consumptions? Whytax the manufacture and exempt the mon: ey lender{; Why tax the wholesale or retail dealer and exempt the professional man? Why discriminate between conditions aud- classes? The people who pay _our internal revenue taxation, but too well ‘know its burthensome and onerous character, and if exemption is to come let it come to their relief ‘and not the relief ofa class especially able to pay taxation. ~-Logansport Pharos.
