KNEPPER, 4gent, Ligonier. : - Excellent Advice. - Hon, Lewis D! Campbell, formerly a prominent leader of the Republican party, was elected permanent chairman of the Ohio Democratic/State Convention which met at Columbus on thef Ist inst. In his admirable address to that body, he gave the following most excellent advice to'the Democracy : i If you would carry your congress, and your next pregidential election, you must begin to.day, and begin, not in tke spirit of envy, or jealousy, butinthe spirit of harmony and fraternal feeling, cach man determined to 'yield something of his individual opinions,to act and .co operate, each man with his brother, for the purpose of ,;&romoting the common cause,— That is what you have all:to do, and if you do&?t doit, all the time you spend, all the money you spend, will be in vain, because as I have before told you, you have a powerful party in the field, which has all the advantages which its position ‘gives it—all the patronage of the govern. ‘ment at it command and under its control.

PLANT A FEW HILLS 0F CORN LATE — A writer in axf exchiange paper advocates planting an occasional hill in every corn * field late, or taking pains to re-plant the “wnissing hills, and gives the following reason for it : If the weather becomes dry during the filling time, the silk and tassel both become dry and dead. In this condition, if it should become seasonable, the silk revives and renews its growth, but the tassel does ,not recover. Then, for want of pollen, the new silk is unable to fill the office for which if Avas designed. The pollen from the replanted corn is then ready to supply the silk, and the filling is completed. = He sgiys nearly all the abortive ears, so. common in all corn crops, is caused by want of pdllen, and that he has known ears to dotible their gize this second filling.c \

Mr. Grant's private sccreturpv, a party 7of the name of Porter—a suggestive name, ®y ‘the way—is building a $30,000 cottage at Long Branch beside Grant’s. These little extravagances appear to be catch- . ing. Where does the money come from ? Porter had nothing when he was origi- ~ nally invested with the honors of the _ White House. IHis jsalary, we beligve, is © $3,500 per annum. How does he manage to build that splendid edifice? _ e ettty e i 3 Summer Care For Hogs., The Prairie Farmer-says: One of the reasons why many fail in realizing what they might from their swine, is that they devote too much attention. to the corn fietd and too little to the hog pasture.— In their eagerness to produce an abundance of feed for their hogs in autuma and . winter, they are negligent/in| providing them with sufficient food during the carlier portions of* the year. Hogs that are stinted during the summer will not take on fat readily on the approach of the cold weather. Algood healthy growth should be kept up all the season. : If you have not already made provisions for supplying your hogs with food during the summer season give attention to it now. A crop of peas, if sown even at this late' day, will be ripe in the month of August. Two bushels sown broadeast on an acre of well prepared land, should pro- * duce at least thirty bushels of shelled _ peas, to say nothing of pods and vines. * For growing swine in the warm season of the year there are few kinds of food that will compare with peas. They do - pot need to be harvedted— the hous will eat them, if they are not too dry, stalks, leaves and all. If peas will form less'fFut than corn, they will produce more flesh ; and that is what is wanted at the period i that precedes the fattening. They fare easy to raise where the soil and climate are suitable for them ; do not exhaust the soil like most crops ; and come infat?justc the time they are most needed. In fngland, where it is impossible to raise ¢orn, * " farmers rely la[rgely on peas to fatten #heir . hogs; while in Canada, where ,;thezncan + raise very fair‘corn, they hold that more hog food can be/ raised from an a¢re of peas than from an acre of corn. | |

e "~ Watering Horses, S Horses should be watered from a brook, pond, or river, and -not from wells or

springs, asthe well water 1s barder aad colder, while fhe running stream is soft and rather warm. The preference ¢f horses is for the soft, even though it be muddy water, to that which is ‘hard. Horses should be allowed in summer time at least four waterings a day, and a half a buck. - etful at a time, and in Winter a pailful . may be allowed morning and evening, which is sufficient to assuage their thirst without causing them to bloat cr puff up. Care, however, should be taken that the horse is not put to work immedidtely after drinking a full bucket of water, especially if required to go fast, because digestion and severe exertion can never go on together, and moreover purging is apt to ensue. In some.cases, broken wind or heaves is thus' produced. Avoid giving warm or tepid water to horses that are often driven from home, because/cold or " well water will then be given them which will then be liable to produce-a congestive chill, followed by lunE fever, and in some cases colic, ' When horses are thus carefully watered, if one or more of them. should refuse their accustomed food, something is wrong, and they should| not be ~ taken-out of the stable to work, or driven further that' day; but an examination should be made as to the cause! with a guide‘ to its removal. — McC'lure’'s New Stale Guide. : e ey A ——eesa s 1 It is said that Beecher saves up all his champagne bottles to throw out ;518 back window nights at cats that come into the yard..
