This reprehengible practice should be stopped, and we know of no more effectual method of accomplishing that object than by imprisoning the offenders in the calaboose. = = s s il A e ’

No Ting/10 Reap.—How often do we find men who excuse themselves from subscribing to a paper or a library by saying they have “no time to read.” When we hear a man thus excuse himself, we conclude he has never found time to confer any shb&aflthgl- gflwkhi;pge,é}ei?er upon’ his~fatnily, §ifs '¢ountry: or'himself. To hear a man thus express himself, is truly humiliating ; and we ean forin. no/other opinion than that such a man is of little importance to socicty. Cromwelt Ttems. DEAR BANNER :—Last week we forgot to mention our building fraternity ; Luke Hill, George Hontz and Thomas Taylor. The former is known for. miles around as a man well prepared to raise'yp and move buildings ‘to ;%m‘ost ‘any distance; whils all of them are engaged in contracting and building throughout the county.— Encs* Messmore will neatly plaster the walls thereof, and N. H..Laverdy will lay up the foundation, upon which the whole structure can securely rest. Sensational items are scarce, but the bugs! “shoofly.” Within "the last few days the ten lined beetle or Colorado potato bug has: made its appearance on the early potatoes.— They are very numerous; one sees them covering the ground even where potatoes have just been planted, waiting for them to come up. Our aéricultural savans tell us that Paris Green, mixed with three times its weight (not bulk) of hard wood ashes, dusted on the patato tops so soon as the larva i batched,.’s sure poison.——J We tried it last year and know it to be so.
Just nm\'se"ir’ery family is busy in the garden, h()civng, weeding and setting out plants. A few useful hints in relation thereto may not come amiss. Have the ground preparéd and marked out, if it is dry weather the spot which contains the plants should be tl)brnilg)xly wet. Use'n table-fork (a knife will g:r’,ut the fine roots) to press down by and héfW(xon the plants to raise them out of the ground, one at a titne as near as possible ; more or less soil will adhere to the roots. Lay them seperately on 4 pan and. thus remove them where they are to be transplanted, after which water them a little. Do pot pour the water,in the place made to put the plant before setting it-out; it makes the ground to become hard and clofiqy when it dri s. Cabbage and tomatodSetreated thus will hold up their heads and grow right along, even in dry weather. Many persons pull up the plant with their fin gers and thus strip off the fine side roots from the main or tap root, and the plant when set will remain sickly until they grow again. Theevening is the best time for trarsplanting in wet or dry weather. For tematocs dig the soil deep and raise it well; they do not require so gaod ol as cabbages, but a deep subsoil: Tomato plants are better and become more stalky to transplant once or twice before setting out in the place, where they are designed to grow. This can be done in some nice warm borders, early, or.in " boxes in the hqhsé Wait until ,tlae weather 1s fully settled and warm before the final transplanting. : " . The weather is warm, and the tarmers atc busy planting. We have scen some corn up, and it looks green, not” yellow as it does some later springs. . There are quite a number of persons sick i this ne’ghborhood. This warm, dry weather we ‘trust will not be the cause of ill health so_early in the season I . NED. Grl e :
IMPROVEMENTS, —lt affords us pleasure to anuounce that vast improvements are to be made in, this town during the present suammer. Among the most prominent of these may be mentjoned a three story brick hotel by Messrs Tumbleson, the erection of which will be commenced next month';b all the contracts for brick, stone, &c., being consummated. J. C. Zimu@rman & Co. will erect a brick, 40x 80, on the lot now occupied by their store building. Hardenbrook & Wolf have purchased a lot north of the Dodge House, with a view of putting up a brick - either by fall or next spring. The work on Schloss' building is making rapid progress, and will doubtless be completed within two months. Henry Engel will immediately ‘commence the erection of a brick dwelling south of the Di ciple Church.— The Ligonier Flouring Millg are to un - dergo thorough repairs, and be supplied with entire new machinery, the: cost of which will exceed $5,000, . = .
It cannot be otherwise than gratifying that our citizens are at last emerging from their lethargy, and that we will soon, be enabled to repel the chaige of fogyism.— With as good a country to sustain ‘a goodsized town as can *be found anywhere, who can doubt that there is a bright future for Ligonier? ;
Normiye can be more grateful to persons who, when they leave comfortable homes and go abroad, than to find something thal compensates for home comforts, such as good rooms and; good landlords that will make the traveler feel contented and happy. All these can be found at the Tremont House, in. our neighboring town of Kendallville. We notice many improvements about this house that reflect great credit upon the proprietor, ‘though there is not wanting evidence to prove that Mr. Kelley knows how to keep a hotel. We congider the Tremont House inferior to none anywhere for comfort and enjoyment | .
