To Tak PoiNt.— Whilst conversing on politieal topics a few weeks ago, a yoang Republican who risked his life in defense of his country’s flag, remarked that “by having cast his vote for tl}(%, republican ticket, he was to a certain extent responsible for the ‘enfranchisement of the ne gro, but,” added the betrayed soldier with patriotic indignation, ‘“‘so help me God, I will' not be guilty of voting ‘that way again.” These are noble words fitly spoken. No class of men feel the degradation of negro equality more keenly than the gallant soldiers. They fought tomaintain the government of our fathers, and now the radical leaders have shed a dark cloud upon these illustrious deeds by subverting that government and reducing our country’s heroic defenders to'an equality with a degraded and inferior race.

SENTIMENTS OF A SoLplEß.—*] would give one month’s wages”, remarked an in dustrious mechanic and herctofore zealous Republican to a leading Radieal the other day, “if every nigger in the land would vote the democratic ticket 2nd thus inflict a merited punishment on the republican party for forcing the fifteenth amendment on the people.” The man who gave utterance to this sentiment served his country four years in the late war,and never voted anything but a republican ticket. His.idea is not a bad one, but the same object might better be accomplished by all the white men voting the democratic ticket at the next election. . oy ek i

Tie Kendallville Journal came t» us lnst Saturday with & new “head”— quite an‘improvement over the one just discarded. The publisher announces that he has adopted thecash-in-advance s; stem; which all right-thinking mer concede to be correct. It affords us pleasure to note the progress made by Bro. Teal in the im provement of the Journal, and we feel assured he will pardon a suggestion that we desire to make in this connection, viz: to drop its ninth column. As at present constituted, the length of the paper is not in proportion with its width, and consegquently presents an awkward appearance.

It keeps Steph. Lockhart very busy to stiffen the back-bone of many who have heretofore been among his most trustworthy party asscciates. The fifteenth amendment creates a great deal of trouble for Steph. All the sophistries advanced in favor of that obnoxious doctrine fall upon deaf ears, | Life-long Republicans, but ‘more ;Partigularly the soldiers, express their emphatic condempation of the inauguration of negro suffrage. They denounce it as the most outrageous fraud ever perpétrated on u free people. iLI A P i

Tue vENDUE of Mr. Joseph Gerber, in the Hawpatch, on Monday last, is said to have been one more largely attended than ever before witnessed in this locality.— About $2,200 worth of goods, chattels, &c., were disposed of. Those 100 large sale bills printed at this office for the occasion had the desired effect of bringing together an unprecedented number of anxious purchasers. 4

Our young dental friend, M. W. Fisher, started for Garduoer, lil,, this morning. He is going ot there to relipve the Suckers of worth'ess teeth. May success -attend him. Like a sensible young man, he subscribed for the BANNER, thereby securing the news from his old home and :the world at large, i

~ For the National Banner. v WOMAN’'S RIGHTS, | The question of “temale suffrage” is as suming magnificent proportions—iv fact 1t is the all-absorbing . all-engrossing top- ' ic—among the atrorg-minded-—it is tlwii question which is agitating the public, mind of tha “shrieking sisterhood.” | It is furnishinrg a delightful, finely fla vored dish for those ambitious women, whe heretofore have been forced by a chain of unpropitions circumstances-—to let their lights shine under a bushel—or 1 the tea pot. : a 2 We are, however, glad to see and know that & volcano is about to throw its molten lava from the bowels of the unpretendiing, modest tea-pot upon the heads of the “lords ‘of creation”—the hitherto acknowledged champions of the political arena E

We need a revolution—in politics. The' American mind is so organized that inactivity produces a fatal, mortal, stagration. With us, #s Americans, the want of enthusiasm works a forfeiture ot patriotism. . ‘

We are also a speech making people—and since the adoption of the Fifteenth Amendment we have been robbed of a favorite, délightful political theme. Upon the decease of slavery, and the enfranchisement of the negro, the American eagle—that great and glorious quadruped, emblematic of freedom, liberty and strength —-has ceased to scream. * : .

With what shall we spice’ Fourth of July orations and eampaign harangues in the future ¢ ] et

To dilate in future upon the f.eroici struggles of our forefathers in their ef-i forts to plant the tree of liberty upon American soil, would be to set before us’ a dish as stale as boarding howse hash.— To make political capital out of the _“iatel nopleusantné:bs" would be to revive “dead | issues.” We have done a “big thing” for | the negro, now let him alone, to take gare! of himself, and like the white trash: “r%not,‘g

hog, or die.” ‘ g - Worhan: what a delightinl soul —inspiring, angelic theme? When I think of her wrongs, contemplate her injuries at the hands of the American people, and reflect that since the foundation of' this governiment she has by hér patriotism, her heroism, her works of “labor and of love” contributed so essentially and materially to our success—l blush for shame and am ready to shriek from-the depths of an overflowing bosom—Oh ! e

A terrible conflict rages within me.--A mighty Vesuvius groans and pleads for utterance. ~ You hard hearted, brazenfaced, full cheeked, maseculine demi-gods, stand and tremble, for your ‘hour of dis-, solation draws nigh. She, to whom we o:wc ‘or very existence, stands on the thieshold of the political arepa and demands an entrance within the charmed circle.: Shall we as Americans — we who accord to women those social, domestic, religious privileges, in a degree eminently higher than any other nation on God’s foot-stool--shall we, I say, deprive ber of that mighty weapon—that great Magna Charta—that bulwark of American indepeundence and lib-. erty, with all its concomitants and corol laries—the ballot® In. my minds cye I see a host innumerable —a band without mumber, of every shade and of every clime, from the black Ethiop to the pig-tailed Chinaman, rise, as if filled with one im-. pulse, one desire, from the ’,l‘o'r_rjd Zone to the North Pole, from the shores of the! Atlantic to tfie waves of .the Pucific-——i “whose sands are amber and whose waves are gold”-—and proclaim in glad acclaim,‘ with a universal shout, the ushering in of the joyful millenium, and the proclamal tion of the sixteenth amendment —the great desideratuin of the age. .

With the ballot in th 2 hands of the] fair, the beautiful, the good, corruption in | high places will’ cease to exist. Péma‘! gogues and political tricksters will be sup- | pressed; corruptionists pulverized and unscrupulous lobbyists vanquished. A complete revolution will be effected. Where now is darkness, light will shine. Lwopurity,. immerality. 'corruption and treasop will give way to honor, virtue, integrity, and untarnished loyalty. Woman, with all the rights and privi leges of man, will cheerfully bear his burdens. She will share with him the hon ors and emoluments of public stations—with Lim share the pserils of the sea, the dangers of the “tented field,” the fatigues of the march. 'Hand in hand they will go forth 'in “seed-time and harvest."-—. Side by side work upon the public high~i ways-—and in return thie fond and tender husband will pail the cows, wash the 1 dishes, officiate at the wash tub and ironing table, the dougbtray and cradie. . 1‘ Everything will rapidly grow “brighter and brighter unto the perfect day;” and in the beautiful language of Micawber, “*All will be "parts of one stupendous whole, Whose right the ballot is, and politics the sole.” ‘i S _Tox. 3 MY G- re o v ' AviLLa, April 11, 1870. It is with pimmc ‘that we are now enabled to announce to our readers that the School Beard, consisting of Messrs. Gerber, Seott and Vail, have set hands to work incplanting trees on the school grounds, paioting the new fence, and improving the appearance of things about the school-house generally.— If mischievons boys can be prevented from destroying the newly-planted trees and committicg other nuisances, Ligonier will ‘ere long bave reason to feel proud of her temple of learning and its surroundings. It is a great pity, however, that the grounds sctapart for a public park, in close proximity to the School House, should have beer converted into a hitch-ing-place, reeking with stench and filling the atmosphere with a sickening odor.
