Joseph G/a ‘zelle, having a spare ‘niche’ in his columne, got off, the other day, the following story: ‘A prominent boot and shoe man of our city came home from the East, over the Hannibal and Bt. On a ohair near the stove, he noticed a trian. gular piece of white goods hanging. He seized it-and, applying it to his ceuntenance, tried in vain to produce a ‘‘dry polish.” At length, disgusted, he dashed the article down, exclaiming: ¢lt's devilish ssinguiar they ean’t keep a dry towel on this#rain!” They didn’t call 'em towels where we came from: hut, astha entire transaction was o the square. we'll -say nothing about it. ;
How 10 Go To INDIANAPOLIS. -— People living in the northern counties of Indiana, desiring to visit Indisnapolis or the seuth_etn part of the State, will find that the | trip vie Laporte and Peru, over the Chieago, Cincinnati & T.onigville Railroad, is the shortest, quickest and most agreeable route’to their destination. . The delegates to the Bth of January conventions who live along the line of the M. 8. Road have been _in the habit of going to Salem Crossing, and from thence to Indianapolis via Lafayette. Jlf these delegates will take the morning train from the east, on the M. 8. Road, they will arrive in this city in time for the departing irain for Indianapolis, and will reach that city several hours quigker thgn by the old route. Steps are heing taken to secure half fare over this rotite, and there is but little doubt that the matter will be accomplished. The C. C. & T.. R. R. is managed by gentlemen who are ‘uédring in their attentions to the travelifié'public ; their new cars are elegant and commodious, and the track isin excellent - condition.—Laporte Argus. i : i ety e e Tur Ft. Wayne Democrat has the following: V. ;
A printer by the name of Robertson, ‘“‘on hbe tnamp,” working a few daysinthis city, left last evening, withont settling his board bill. He is inexcusable in'committing so rascally a trick, as he bad euffici:m funds paid him at this office, where heé last worked, to settle his bills. He isg rather a slim man. of medium siz>, dark complexion, talkative, and about twentyfour years of age. ‘We advise printers to give him a wide berth. ' We 'ave of the cpinion that if priniersin general wonld give a little less encouragement to strolling vagabonds who perambulate from one part ®f the country to andther, living and traveling on the charity of hard working uewspaper men, it would ‘be better for all parties. We know of no good reason why printers should be supported in laziness any more than farmers, and the habit of giving “‘strapped’ typos woney to aid them in their travels and oavousaly, js fav more “honored in the breach than in {he gbservance.” Any man can find -work if ‘he wishes to, land if these tramps”’ eannot gel work in 8 printing office, they can always find other fields for labor.” They ehonld be forced to seek them, aud thus the profession would. rid itself of an evil that is rapidly becoming an intblerable nuisance. ‘
1 el 4 BB ; . ; From the Argus. A #ull D ess tor Church. b Proubably, all persons, frequenting places ‘of public worship, have observed the excesgive display of elegant and stylish dressing, exhibited on such occasions. This is more noti¢eable in the larger cilies, than in - a town like ours: but, to the extent of their “ability, small ‘towns imitate larger ones; as younger ¢hildren, their elders, in matiérs of dress. A faghionable congregstiu‘n of the present 'day presents as gay and brilliant an appearance as'thé au.dience at an opara or a theatre. Costly silks and velvet sweep nlong the aisles; birds of ‘evary plumage, and butterflies of every hue, it daintily, saucily, or fiercely, upon the ladizs’ heads: bright colors flash from every pew; and over ail, innumerable ribhons stresm in every direction. Altogether, thé scs e in onough to completely bewilller/ the sonses of any iunosent rustic, bappening’ to be present, and -effectually prevent eavneet attention to the words of the preacher. 2Ae Seriously, however, this practiee of making the church a place for the exhibition of fine dlother, is pot a good one. Gray Edcre. KM—M& st of: the week, Mr. John H. "e;;!!lging" near Mooresburg, noticed several Eagles in the vicinity of where a steer had been killed. Taking his gun he started for the place, and when within about a hundred yards of the spot, the Eagles raised. The largest one flew off, and the other, taking the leg of the steer, with considerable meat on it, upwards of thirty pounds, flew to the j:l(:p of a tree, where, holding the meat with one 'z’w?r‘ tnigng himl?" with the Og he ro{xdod-' o regale bimself with the savory morsel. Mr. Wheatley approached as near as he thought he dared, about one hundred yards, and taking an off hand aim, brought the bird of liberty to the ground. Mr. Wheatley, by the way, is a dead shot with a rifle.— Suppesing the bird was killed, Mr. W. advanced, when the Eagle raised up agd showed fight. Not wishing to risk breaking bis gun by : triking at if, he backed out, until he could gather a club, and was followed closely by the Eagle. Mr. Wheatley tells us it would bound after him upon one foot, holding: the other in front of it to claw him, and that it jumped four and fire feet at a bound. He also. says it jumped over atix ra 1 fence without using its wings, and not touching. the fence at all, Its wings were rendéred useless to it by the bullet it had received. Mr. Wheatley having got all the amusement cut of it He desired, stretched Mr. Eagle on the ground by a well directed stroke with a club. Taking it home he measured and weighed it, and these are the dimensions: From tip 10 tip of wing, seven and a half . feet, from tjp of bill to rip of tail, three fe-t eight inches: its claw nails measured four inches, ita weight was eleven pounds. That is what we call considerable of a bird. and if any one has killed a larger one in these neck of wocds, we would like to hear /of (it. Mr. Wheatley says | there are two more in his neighborhood, | one larger, he thiuks, than the; one he killed. -He is watching for them, and if they ever come within range of his rifle. will be dead Eagles. — Winamac Republican.
