Sational Banner, BRAIN fi \'VES_A NOVEL THEORY. The New York Sun ny}h: We | mentioned a few days ago, that, , writer in, Logdon Spectator hegq propounded a theory of r“bni“g‘& waves,” to account for the appesyanee of petsons at the point of eath t 6 their dis- “: ‘:‘:flfld;?' He claims thit there is | a kind of braiv atmosphere, which ex‘tends 0"‘"%“3]?0. amfim which the brain has power of impressing undula}lom.‘j‘nst as a bell sets the air in motlon, or an electric battery the electric fluid ina telegm'p? wire,— These waves, when they meéet with a sympathetic organ, produce ideas and images more or less’ distin?:t, aceor-! | ding to circumstances. The subject _is | undergoing discussion, And some facts confirmatory of the theory are advanced. - One is the case g‘f a person whose image was seen by his wife to enter his house and go up stairs some two hours before his actual farrival.— | _ On inquiry, it was found that at that " ‘moment he was mentally imagining himself as doing the ‘precise thing which his apparation @id. Another story is, gerhaia. .not pexo many of our readers, but it is sufficient interisting to be repeated: / . “Admiral Sir T'homas Williams, a stfhightforvvar’ ‘and excellent man, was in command of a uhi£ crossing the Auanuic Uceall. I 8 churse bavughe him within sight of the islahd of Ascension, at that fime uninhabited, and never visited by any ship except for . the purpose of collecting turtles, which . abound on the coast. 'lile‘islagd was barely deseried on the horizon, and was not to be noticed at all ; but as Sir Thomas looked at it, ‘;he was seized by -au unaccountable desire to steer toward it. He felt how strange such a wish would appear to his crew, and tried to disregar(P it, but in vain. His | ; desire became more and more urgent --and distressing, and foreseeing that '+ it would soon Ee more digcult to grat~ify it, he told his lieutenant to prepare to ‘put about ship,’ and steer for Ascengion. The officer to whom he spoke ventured respectfully to represent, that changing (heir course would greatly delay them-—that just at that moment the mén were going to their ~diuner<—that, af least some delay ~might be allowed. But these 'arguments seemed to increase Capt. Williams’ anxiety, and the Zhip was steered toward the uninteresting little island. All eyes and spy-glasses were now fixed upon it, and soon some_thing was perceived on the shore. ‘lt is white—it is a flag—it must be a signal!” and when thes7 neared the shore, it was ascertained that sixteen | men, wrecked on that coast many days before, and sufferring the extrem ity of hunger, had aét.up a signals though almost without a hope of relief,” P COMPUTING INTE;EST.—Here i a new_rule for computing interest, ahd it is so simple and so true that every - person should paste it up for reference. - By no other arithmetical process can ! }he desired information be obtained by 80 few figures : i Six per cent.—Multiply any given ‘number of dollars by| the namber of days of intereatidesir?d,.ae arate- the right-hand figure and divufla by six ; the result is the true interest-on guch sum for such number of days at six | per cent. o Eight per cent.—Maultiply any given amount by the number of days upon which it is desired to ascertain the interest, and divide by|forty-five,, and | -the result will be the itherest of such fo? the time requireq. at eight per cent. ; uh ' Ten per cent.—Multiply the same as above and divide by thirty-six, and | the result will show tie interest at ‘ten per cent, e
| Cheerful People, 4 God bless the. chserful person |— man, woman or child, old or young, illiterate or educated, handsome or homely. Over and above every other gocial trait stands cheerfulness. What the sun is to nature—what God is to the stricken heart which knows how to lean upon him, hre%}cheertul persons to the house and wayside. They go unobtrusively about' their silent mission, brightening up| society around them with the happiness beaming from their faces. We love to sit near them ; we love the glance Ff their eye, the tone of their voice. Little children find them . out, oh! 8o quickly, amid the densest crowd, and, passing by the knotted-brow and compressed lip, glide near, and laying a little confiding hand on their knee, lift their clear young eyes Lo their loving faces.
To' MAKE ?PENfi;IL MARKS INDELIBLE.=——A great many ' valuable letters and other wjitinge are in pencil. The following simple process will make peuncil writing jor drawing as indelible as if done with ink; Lay the writing in a shallow dish and pour skimmed milk upon it. Very idle is all curiosity concerning other people’s estil;;:tes of us and all fear otP remaining unknown is not less so. It a'man knows he can do anything—knows thazfe‘ean do it better than any one else—he has a pledge of .acknow{;adgment of that fact by all persons.
