Tue First Sxow.—On Friday last the first snow of the séason fell to the depth ~ of about eight inches, covering the carth . with a sheet of white at a time when her foliage still retained its green. IT may be a source of comfort to the editor of the Kendallville Standard to impute improper motives to a contemporary, vide his remarks of our retraction of the charges against Col. Williams, but we doubt whether such a course will meet the approbation of fair minded wen generally. No man can truthfully say that we ever published a line that we knetw tobe untrue, however inviting might have been the opportunity. Col. Willianis himself does not question our sincerity 9n the belief that those R}ntements Were cor-. rect, and our -retraction, after becoming convinced of the exXistence of a’regretful misufiderstanding, ‘was entirely satisfactory to him and his nearcst friends. The Standard's insinuations are, therefore, tot only unjustifiable, but suggest the necessity of cultivating a feeling approximating the courtesies due one another in editorial Yife. < g
RuNaway.—The Waterloo City Presssays that on Saturday night, the 18th inst., as a party of citizens of that place weére returning from Prof. Hubbard's Concert, at Auburn, their team became. ulipiduage‘nble _near Mr. McAntarffer's residence, south of towh, and ran away. Capt. Stevens, who ‘was driving, was' thrown out when they first started, and
others were left at intervals along the road to town: When they came to the corner of Wayne and; Railroad streets, and attempted to turn to go up to the stable, the carriage upset, throwing those who had remained in it to the ground.— Several of the party received pretty severe bruises and cuts, but we hear of no one sustaining dangerous injuries. Their escape, was almost miraculous. * .
M=s. EMMA F. Mowurnoy, the talented editress of the South Bend National Union, addressed a poem to the editorial convention.at Laporte, on the 15th, and was received in a manner that indicated the surprise and admiration of the audience —surprise that so gnod a poem had been prepared for their entertainment; and admiration of the beautiful thought and sentiment so elegantly entwined with po etic fancy. As to the manner ‘in which ‘the poem was-read, all we need say is that Mrs. Molloy is a good reader, and of ¢ourse was well acquainted with the lines she rendered. - The poem was the best production of the meeting, and was nourishment for the appreciative minds present. o

To all persons in need of spectacles we can safely recommend these spectacies as being decidedly preferable to all others. Mot ;
