Hational Banner, If we, through our Senators, instruct you to sell gold (as T|think has been ordered under certain restrictions,) well and good, 1 “but till we so instruet you, you have 'ho} ‘authority to sell'it. Now, take the late Alurry, or cornér, iln' gold. It 's's_.purely‘ and wholly speculative. The community (or the itelligent portion of it, at . least), loeked upon it as simply a flight between two gambling' parties (the “bulls” and the ‘“bears”), and were perfectly contented to look on and let them fight itfot knowing that the masses would not be hurt, no matter which party might win. Had the fight not been interfered with, it could not have lasted ‘over ten or twelve days at the outside, as by that time immense amounts of gold would bave been on. their way to New -quk from all parts of the cemmercial world. Thus our stock of gold would haye been so largely increased as to lower the. premium by the natural cause of supply: exceeding demsnd. But, as if to prevent this, you throw our propérty on the market to break it, and thussave a few. gold-gambling “bears” from loss. Supposed the case revived, that the market had gone against “bulls,” &nd they bad come begging on their knees for Secretary Boutwell to go in and buy a few millions so as to pat up the market and save them from loss.- - Would Secretary Boutwell have acquiesced ? I think not ; and yet there wo;g)ld be as much reason and justice in the one course as in the other. |

Let me ask youthe following : If you were a morchast in Groton (or anywhere else) and had in your employ.a head finagcial clerk (a cashier, who had control of your cash), what would you think of that cashier taking some of your cash and handing it over to a few gamblers to pay their losses? This—no more and no less— is just what has been done with our (the people’s) Bold. Once before a certain secretary did a similar thing to save the Bank of England from suspension, and the injury capsed at home by that act - wasg_well nigh irreparable; yet you, honorable sir, commit the same error to save: a few gamblers ' from loss, and we (the ‘ people) will suffer for it by being denied the large influx of specie that would have come to us had the gamblers been let alone. : .+ Now, honorable sir, if you, as our cashier, can see your way claer for a few months ahead, and find you have a sur- + plus of gold, just say sq to us tbrough qur Congress, and we, through the same channel, will instruct you how and when to dispose’ of the surplus. We (the people) will take care of the gold gamblers, and we want you to take care of our cash : but -we do not want you to sell or buy gold for the benefit of any party, be they “pulls’or bears.” ; S We can never bé forced to specie payments' by artificiall means. That will come: gradually’ and ina natural way, Jjust as soon as we get a Secretary of the Treasury who will stick closely to the line of his duty and pay no attention to threats or persuasions, be they. from President, loyal-leaguers, buMs, or bears. - You, honorable. sir, have it'in your pcwer to leave a noble record, and the people hope you will henccforth léave the gamblers to fight out their battles without any help from our money. The sooner these cliques of gold gamblers ard wiped completely out the better the pe‘k}plé will: like it. With assurances of my respect and. best wishes tor prosperity, I am yours very truly, Pl B, @8

Tur tomato season has not yet closed, and hence we thigk the following, clipped from the |N. Y. Mercury, of considerable interest to the gatherer of: this most valuble product : ‘ . — It is said that the tomato-worm is inca‘pable of stinging ; its dangerousness "consigts in its ability to eject from its mouth, when irritated, a green, poisonous sub‘stance, to a distance of from three to fifteen inches, directly at the apm or hand picking the fruit. This substance is.of so caustic a poison that if there should be thn slightest abrasion of the skin, or if a thin or delicate skinned person, it will onuse a sensation similar to the sting of a bee, and produce violent sickness, and perhaps death. Although we eannot vouch for the accuracy of this information, yet we throw it out as a means of putting our readers ou their guard. It would be well, when picking tomatoes, to wear longwristed gloves. . ¢

A little girl of Christopher Smith, of thig place, was severely, and very extensively mutilated on Friday last. She was ‘playing with a bottle which was about half full of .powder, and oonolud_ing to have an explosion, she procured a lighted paper, ‘thinking that she could touch the powder off without injury to herself. The bottle was of very thick glass, and when the explosion took place, it was shivered into innumerdble fragments, many of them lodging into the body, hands and face of the little girl. She is very badly cut up, and fears’ are entertained that she may lose one of her eyes. We hope' this may be a warning to ohildren, not to play with powder in an any manner.— Warsaw Indianian.

_ KING OF HORSE BOOKS

A SSTEWARTS AMERICAN FAR- % } MER’S HORSE BOOK bus beev Justly ternied, comprising 600 octavo ‘pages, with a large number of appropriate illustrations and embellishments. During the two and a half years since its first appeararce, this great work has been consulted in the treatment of nearly every ailment to which the horse, ‘‘man’s noblest servitor,” issubject, and always with entire satisfaction. . Thousands of cases, in the aggregate, bavé been reported to the publisher and his agents, with the result: of a perfect cure in at least nineteen cases out of every twenty. Agents all say thatthe strongest pownt they haye ever made in selling books is one they can always make with the HORSE BQOK, viz. : b ; b | EVERY TEST To which it can reasonably be subjected. Fist‘u)ga, Big Head, Spavin, Blind Staggers, Swino, Distemper, Lockjaw, and even Glanders (in ) its first and second stages), with scores of other diseases, have been constantly treated with perfect success by the thousands of Farmers, and others, who bave become the fortunate possessors of this noble volume. We could easily fill two pages of the BanNer with extracts from letters giving the history of the cases above referred to, and expressing the highest appreciation of he American Farmer's Horse Boolk for its clearness of style (especially in iti descriptions -of diseases and treatment), the simplicity and efficacy of the remedies prescribed, its great comprehené“w:epess, etc.—in a word, its ; ; R 7 PRACTICAL VALUE - In every respect. But suffice it to say, the lerge number of recommendations which the publisher has had printed for the information of the public are merely soecimens of hundreds of a similar character~which he has received, and continues still to reccive by almost every mail, - This list of PRACTICAL TESTS will be: sent, post paid, to any farmer, or other person, who will forward his address for that purpose. " But this norivalled work is something mere ‘than a mere * horse doctorbook.” Itis : AN A COMPLETE GUIDE . And at a price so reasonable as'to e within the reach of all. There is scarcely a single county in which from 400 to 2,000 copies can not be sold between ‘now and the ‘first of next May, by means of an intelligent and ' systematic canvass. Unlike a large class of merely -sensational books—deservedly short-lived and rapidly falling into disrepute —this work grows in popular ‘favor continually, and is now selling with increased rapidity everywhere, From its great and obvious practical value, and its non-political character, agents are doing splendidly with itin many "localities where other books are a mere drug in. the market, and can hardly be given away.. 4 ; Tla® WW, When people génerally are in funds; and have leisure to examine the book when the agent &omes_{ around, and fo read it after they purchase, rand when also the roads are in good condition—now is the harvest fiflm whole year for the agent with The American Farmer’s Horse Book. . = §3" Farmers, farmers’ sons, intelligent mechaunics, school teachers, and other young men out of employment, clergymen and physicians whose time is-only partially occupied, sad others, will find in_the'sale of this hook (almost, equally with professional canvassers) exactly the occupation they want to employ, either the whole or a part of their time in an agreeable manner, f::‘the same time that they are making money for themselves, and doing a Commissions most liberal, and territory to suit, from » township mmm-hm-mmfi‘ ty, or more.
