Tam consolidation of the Lake Shore roads from DBuffalo to Chicago, with a branch to St. Louis from Toledo, has been virtually completed. The financial terms of the consolidation are that the Michigan Southern stock will be put in at an advance of tweniy per vent., and that of the other roads at par. This gives a continuons‘);liné of 1,600 miles under ono management, The marked feature of Izge' consolidation is the way in which the stoek has been ‘‘watered” "to effect it. All of the stocks have been heavily watered since 1865, and now there is% furlher addition ‘of seven millions, on which dividends must be declared. The total debt and capital of the consolidated companiés aggregates $85,000,000, when it ought not to exceeed $25,000,000. The present earnings of the roads do mot promise any margin after paying running expenses and the interest. on the, bonded debt; 8o thabt whatever money is made out of the oconsolidation ‘will be the result of sharp practice in \gnll street. —Fz. - :

SropriNG A NewsPAPER.—An exchange has the following allegory, which we cotnmend to careful consideration: %A certain man hit his toe against a pebble and fell headlong to the ground. He was vexed, and under: the igfluence of anger and self-sufficiency ho kicked old mother earth right saucily. With imperturbable gravity he looked to see the earth itself dissolve and come to naught. But the earth remained, and only his poor foot was injured in the encounter. This is the way of man. An article in'a newspaper touches him' in a weak spot, and forthwith he sends to stop his paper. - With great complacency he looks to sge the crash, when he finds he only hit his-own toe against s world that does not perceptibly feel'the shoek, and injures no one but himself.” : —?——4.o—-——.——- " BueAR, sugar, sugar ; coffee, coffee, coffee; tea, tea, tea, cheap, at Glatte’s. * Croruixna for the fall season, durable and cheap, at L.
