Pational Banner, i 1 ‘From the New York World. THE LAST HOURS OF AN INJURED S :—When a man bas steeped himself to the dregs in all that is vile in morals and disreputable in manhood ; is unworthy of truth in any shape; guilty of fraud and murder—crimes which commit a man of less shrewdness to the penitentiary—as has been shown to be the case in the portraiture given of Daniel E. Sickles, it yet seems that we bave an administration to honor this man and insult
R o A RS esß B i i gramtan . sador thereto ; and we have a public pag'ty opinion to justify thesemcts. Will not these facts be extenuation to thie sins charged against the unhappy wo~man who caled him husband, and who now sleeps forgotten in her dishonored grave? Will you not allow -a simple word- in behalf of one of her sex by one who has had opportunity to know ? I for one do not believe Mrs. Sickles guilty of the charge made against her.— I believe Sickles to have been as vile in his treatment of his wife as he was in ev‘ery vther respect ; perhaps mote vile, because he could wrong her. with impunity, snd sweep from the earth, covered with oGium, a man whose graces created envy, in his own mind, and whose manly sense of honor was a reproach to his own vileness, and whose intellect and culture _were far beyond his own reach, and whose only sin was in his sympathy for, ‘and kindness to a neglected, illused wife. T admit that it is dangerous ground, this sympathyf for a married woman ; far better be content to suffer, endure and die, than toueh the tempting cup, * Let\%l{i suffice on this head. ‘That Mrs. Sickl was lovely in person, simple and child- * like in chamacter, all admit. Such characters are hot easily degraded. Were shie the degraded creature he has led the world to believe, her sensibilities would not have remained so acute that she died in less than two years of a broken heart. She was weak and cowardly, I ajdmit. Alas! these defects would have madé her . sacred in the eyes of a manly man, and he would have done his utmost to shield her from evil. Let me depict the last few hours in the life of this injured woman. i Stung, it may be, by an irresponsible feeling of remorse, he pretends in the eyes of:the world to have restored her to fawvor. I will not discuss the propriety of this kind of clap-trap sentiment. T speak of the fact. A . She was placed in a handsome bouse, - with the ordinary appliances of v)ealth.l
Qf the secret history of the two at this time nothing need be said. She was ru- ~ ined in character, broken in health, utterly lost—left without hope, without society, and without sympathy, except from " the few who were related to her, and who loved and pitied her. She had long ‘ntervalvs of nervous prostration, when she would.be for hours like a dying person, She sat day after day with her ‘head leaning upon her wasted hand, and ‘eyes listless, seeing and caring for little in & world whose sulshine to her had been so darkly eclipsed. She sighed faintly, but said little or nothing. She was a sad wreck. She knew she was dying and expressed no thought or interest in aynthing but her absent daughter. ~ One ‘day she turned, suddenly to a young friend and asked :. “Dou.you think me a gnilty woman P and, without waitipg. for an answer, she went on: “I wish to speak now . while I can. I was so shocked and terrified at that horrible time that I did not know what I said.— " But I am not guilty of any sin. Mr. Sickles ‘was very violent—l was afraid of him—he brought me a paper, which he sald I.must sign—he said he. should be hung if I did not sign it. I mever read one word, of that paper; I did not know one word written in it. I'put my name where he. told me, and to agave his life,” She was sinking rapidly, and was carried to ber bed from a long fainting turn. ‘ As she opened her eyes, reviving slowly, “they fell upon the face of Daniel E. Sick%es, painted and tramed, hanging before her. “Lifting her pale hand, she said :— “Pake it away.” s : Those about her remonstrated ; but the second and the third time she murmered : “Pake it away.” = - Gk The picture was removed. “Now place my daughter’s face there,” she said, switb a sad amile. This was done, and . she gazed with a longing, wistfal look upon thie young face, and sighed heavily. The poer, weary eyes closed, and she bas gone to Him unto’' whom is opened the. i secrets of the heart. | ' : = o ONErWaO KNows,
‘“THIE BAND OF FAITH.” Some months since we chronicled the fact that Shartleff College, Upper Alton, Illinois, ‘contained within its scholastic jurisdiction a peculiar religious organiza. tion known ase 'the “Band of Faith.”— The members of this theologica) club pro: fessed to have discovered an entirely new principle in political economy, whereby the necessary food and raiment required to sustain and clothe their physical frames could be procured without the intervention of those common-place means generally used by the unenlightened masses who are so unfortunate as to dwell out- . side the boundaries of ;l:nrtlefi‘(}ollego. . This new pfl::g},, this charming substitute for cash a nd edit, this patent lever which was destined to move the world, and put, both ARcHiMEDES and Apam Smrra to the blush, was nothing niore or less than faith. If a-needy student wanted a pair of breeches, he did not go to o the tailor and order them, or to the clothing store und buy them—he simply -RO ey and: s & vigueoue sl quality. inary chapter dntroducing the movel scheme to the public, and giving it his official and ministerial sanction. We had supposed, msy, we had eyen hoped, that an enterprise fraught with such momentous consequences, and so admirably adapted to relieve the necessities of impecunious humanity would grow and flourish like the greenest of green bay trees, until at last all the dwellersin Christendom and heathendom might sit under tho branches thereof with folded arms, waiting with more than Micawber's confidence for “something ‘to turn up”— knowing full well that whatever did turn would surely be trumps.
the rest of mankind, aredoomed to ’disa‘ppointment. The “Band of faith,” has éxploded and vanished into chaos. No cause is assigned for this unbappy termination to an auspicious beginning. The death of the patient is announced. But the attendant physicians have neglected to specify the disease which destroyed.— Whether the pamphlet aliuded to or the preface which accompanied it, was too ‘much for, the eshereal constitution of the , “band,™ we are unable even to guess but that it is dead there seems to be no doubt,
While sympathizing with the members of the defunct body upon a calamity which has deprived them of their base of eupplies, we would quietly suggest that they fall back in good order to their or. iginal position, and, discarding faith, endeavor to live by their works.— Mo. Rep.
’ Swindling the People. Secretary Boutwell has bought, per ‘month, bon’as to the amount of twef:e ; millions of dollars, paying for them one bundred and twenty-four cents on ‘the dollar, when he could, under the law, have paid them off dollar for dollar. ‘Here is a clear loss of $2,880,000 per month to the American people, that is, about three times the whole ex- | sensq’a of carrying on the government ~during ' the administration of John Quincy Adams. Yes, although the administration of Mr. Adams was put down for allelged‘ extravagance. fir. Boutwell is allowed to give away, to. bestow as a gratuity, to donate outside of any requirement or authority ofiaw, nearly tripple the amount of all that the Adams administration sost the country. Ifany private man of business had an-agent who thus paid out his tunds without warzant of law, he ‘would instantly kick.the creature from. his service. flyhe fact that Boutwell i allowed to continue his operations is a crying shame and a how‘)ing infamy. It involves a reputation of the govern‘ment’s promise to the people as recorded in black and white upon the statute books and upon the greenbacks, and, if the presént policy be persisted in, another and a less inexcnsable kind of repudiation will follow, that will not suit the bondholdess halfso well— Cannot even Lwman moles. and bats and owls see thjis %—E=z. * |
How 0. MAKE A SIMPLE GALVANIC. BATTERY.— Procure about twenty copper pennies (if worn smooth 80, mnch the better) ; or get some sheet copper, cus cireular and of large diameter, and: fhe same number of similar ?ieces of zine, The latter may be formed by the constructor ‘himself; being very eggsily melted, it may be cast in & mold like lead, or it may be procared in a sheet, and cut similar to copper. Then provide the same number of pieces of cloth, which must be soaked in a solution of ¢ommon salt and water ; or, what' is better, a liquid ¢omposed; of ome part of sulphuric acid, two,of nitric acid, and sixty of water. Aftey this is done, place one of the pieces of zine in a tea-sau-cer, and on it place one of the pennies, or pieces of sheet copper; on this ‘place a piece of cloth, and so continue ‘making a pile—zine, copper, cloth—until they are all piled on one another; taking eare to make the atra&em’ent throughout. The piece on the top, which will be a penny, should have a ‘copper wire, which, for some experiments, should be tipped with platinam wire soldered to it, the lower piece, which will be zinc, should be treated in the same manner.
