‘Ounr venerable friend, Meclntire Sey‘more, gladdened the hearts of our entire houschold, last week, by the presentation of & basket of the largest and most delicious apples, and a like quantity of monster potatoes, thas we ever laid: our eyes upen or inserted our teeth into. VoLrtsioN.—On Sunday afternoon as Mr. Connef, the section hoss, made his usual - trip oyer the road on a hand car, the gravel train, corsisting of a locomotive and two carg, came suddenly and unexpectedly whirling along from the West, at an alleged speed of 40 miles an hour. There being a lngh wind at the time, and the whistle of the locomotive giving but a very weak shrill; Mr. Conner did not discover his perilous condition until the. train was rapidly approaching the hand car, when beand his five companions hastily jumped from the car, and made a. desperate effort to remove the same from the track. Theg had about half succeed¢d, when the locomotive struck the hand car, which, asa matter of course, was coinpletely wrecked. '

. BarN BurNED.—We arc informed that on Saturday night last, abous 12 o'clock, the large Harn of Mr. David Stukey, about three miles south-cast of Goshen, was totally destroyed by fire—supposed to be the work of an incendiary. The entire contents were consumed, the principal items being the following : Fifteen hundred bushels of avheat, three buggies, an entirely new carriage, three horses and two mules ; also two mules belonging to Adam"rryer, who stayed at Mr. Stukey's that night, and a valuable horse owned by Mr. Samuel Stutzman. It required every excrtion to save the dwelling house, as the flames had made great head-way before the fire in:the barn was discovcred. Mr. Stfikefiosa amounts to between $5,000 and $6,000 ; insured in the Farmer's Home Insurance Assuciation to the amount of $2,400. Mr. Tryer feels the loss of his mules quite severcly, as he is a poor man, and was just on his way to his new home in Marshall eounty. One hundred dollars were ‘collected on the spot and presented to- Mr, Tryer.

A SuvaarsTive INCIDENT,—In his des. “cription of the “doings” at® Warsaw on ‘ | the 8d inst., Bro. CoiRGRg e R R R L e Kesparivivie, Sept. 13th, '69. ‘MR Eprron:—Another week has gone by, and Eil Tam on hand_rendy to give you the latest news from our precious little city. I know you visit our place very frequently, but still, there are a great many things transpiring every day of which you have no iden. Business did not open very brisk on Tuesday morning on account of theegol weather, which made it very unpleasant, and I am sure that an overcoat would have come in very handy. By ‘the way, I have Leard sever‘al of ‘the boys in town say that Engel ‘& Co., have a splendid assortment of them, besides they keep on hand a large stock of piece goods, such as Chinchillas, ‘Beavers, Doeskins, Meltons &ec., which they make to order in the latest styles, and then you can find Abe Herts always ready to wait on you and give you bargaios in their line. ,Ftiend Loomis has moved, and his new store looks as neat as a pin. Bill Crow says that advertising pays, as he told me thie other day that his advertisement in your paper (the BANNER) pays itself double, every one’ knows Bill is a clever fellow, and in the way of , groceries, fie can’t be undersold. Nearly every one in town has got the ague, but Krueger says it won't last long if they will try his Hoosier Bitters. Have you tried them, Mr, Stoll? If not, I will tell you they are good. I see the Silver Band have | some two or three new instruments, and were out on the street with them last Thursday night. I tell you the boys mean busigess. I mustsay that Mr, Cox of the Journal is a lucky man, for whenever the boys go out serenadicg they never forget him, I think it is because he thanks them through his columns every week, " If/C. O. was to do the same thing, they would uadoubtedly call on him occasionally, Our public school opened last week, and in addition to the English and Latin branches, they have a German teacher, but from where he hails T - know, not. Every thing in the dancing linc is quict at present. DBut we are all waiting patiently for that grand Masquerade Ball: in the Lightning Express Qity of Ligonier. A fire broke:out here in the frame build ing of Mr. T. B. Black, occupicd by;John Bigler, as a clothing store, on Friday afternoon apbout. three olclock; but was |

‘Jup. PALMITER gives our “departed” friend, Kimsey, a parting kick in the following blunt style: e Kimsey' sold himself cheaper than Judas Iscariot did:to a low, infamous, blackleg clique, and he was a perfect sneak and filth-squirter in their hands. ‘Only that and nothing more’ He has now something of his reward. DBut salegble garbage as he was, and a wreck of manly honor, yet he had not thief, vngupond and every other attribute ot total depravity exemplified and written upon every lineament of his countenance as another tool has which the same clique have been using.” ‘ o C. 0. is never overlooked when Judson speaks. ; B %

Pius VERSUS Poririos.—A remarkable feature in the local ‘politics of Warren county, Ohio, is reported in the Cincinnati Guazette. The Republican party is split in twain between an allopathic faction anfd a homoeopathio faction. The physicians of the older school have 4 secret combination, by means of which they have defeated the nomination or election of ¢very man in the county who has had the temerity to employ & homoepathic physician. The party lines are now rigidly drawn between the physician and the followers of the two syptems, giving the Demobmcy & fair chance of carrying ‘the county. This is probably the first instance in the history of the country of administering politics ~on allopathic or homoeepathic principles.

A MgeriTorious ARTICLE.—We are tired of this idea of “puffing” humbug medicines that are constantly thrown into drug stores, and are merely an imposition apon a community.! But when an article comes into the market that is really worthy of comment, we arve happy to make the public acknowledgement, trusting that some benefit may arise therefrom. Dr. R. V. Pierce, of Buffalo, N. Y., is the proprietor of Dr. fage’s Catarrh Remedy, end we take:pleasure /in calling attention "to it because we know it to be a good article, and a sure cure for that loathsome disease, Catarrh. KING OF HORSE BOOKS

A SSTEWART'S AMERICAN FARCTMER’S HORSE BOOK has bléeq justly termed, comprising 600 octavo pages, with a large number of appropriate illustratfons aod embellishments. . During the two and a ‘ half years since its first appearance, this great work has been consulted in the treatment of rearly every silment to which the horse, ‘‘@an’s I noblest servitor,” is subject, and always/ with entire satisfaction, Thousands of cases, in the aggregate, have been reported to the publisher ard his agents, with the result of a perfe¢t cure in at least nineteen cases out of every twenty. Agents all. say thatthe strongest point they haye ever made in selling books is oge they caa always make with the HORSE BOOK, viz. :

To which it can reasonably be subjected. Fistuls, Big Head, Spavin, Blind ‘Staggers, Bwinny, Distemper, Lockjaw, and even Glanders (in its first and second stages), with scores “of other diseases, have been constantly treated 'with perfect success by the thousands of Farm-’ ers, and others, who have become the fortunate possessors of this'noble volume. We could easily “fill two pages of the BaxNer with extracts from letters giving the history of the cases ‘above reterred to, and expressing: the. highest appreciation of The American Farmer’s Horse Boolk for its «clearness “of style (especially in its descriptions of diseases and treatmént), the:simplicity-and: ef?) ficacy of the remedies prescribed, its great comprehensiveness, etc.—in a word, its
