Eprron:—No doubt the readers of your valuable paper would be pleased to hear from our City, and’ for their bencfit I enelose the following: Our City was visited last week by the Rev. R. D. ' McCarthy, who delivered a very eloquent temperance address, Our Post Office is still in the same place, but looks very lonely “without Jim, who is ‘at present carrying on the insurance business, with headquarters in Mitchell’s block. Wheat is coming in very freely, but farmers seem down-cast on account of the low rates.— All of our merchants have been east and bought very heavy-—more especially the firms of Engel & Co., and Jacobs & Keller, who have a large stock of clothing, picce goods, notions, &c. I would also mention that the above named firms will close their stores on the 6th and 15th of next month, on account of the Jewish Holidays. Bill Crow.is still alive and has a largestock of groceries. The Thespian’ Socicty are going to play several new pieces on the 26th, 27th, and 28th of this month, dramatized especially for the oceasion, Loomis intends moving his mammoth stock across the street, in Z. C. Thomas & Co.’s'old stand. The Rev. Mr. Harzison] of Bloomington, lilinois, formerly of ‘this place, delivered a very interesting scrmon on spiritualism, at the Disciple Church, yesterday afternoon.— Very little building going on at present and things in that line look rather dull. Jim - Kelley has got patent right on the brain and is going to visit New York next momth with his turn-table. Having written you all the ncws I can think of at present, and hoping to be able to give more next week, ' I am yours truly, &c., H.

Allen Mostetter is appointed appraiser, and subsequently made tax-col-lector. How many votes could %e. get by submitting his" “claims” to a vote of the people ? j o 4. Is it right that he should, therefore, allow his gall of revenge to flow ceaselessly upon the head of his more successfulycompet itor ? v Gl o An early reply to these questions is respectfully solicited by -~ INQUIRER.
A WONDERFUL TRANSFIGURATION.— For the, benefit of negro lovers, ratifiers of the 15th amendment, and sable worshipers, we relate the following wonderful, but very consistent change of color, from the pure white lineament of the Anglo Saxon to the ebony hue of the tho-rough-bred African: We have in our midst a man of integrity and learningJ. 8. Lockbart, Esq,—one whose judgment and knowledge of the moral and political attributes should bave pointed out to him a path wherein to tread entirely opposite to the one he has blindly chosen, and thus saved himself from thq degrading change that has recently comeover him,. But, contrary to his own convictions, and the earnest advice of his many warm friends, he sneered at and cast aside the principles of liberal democracy, ?d chained himself to the debasing inuences of radicalism. For yeurs he has suppo ted that “moral” party, used every intrigue to enhance party interest and radical rule. * Now mark the result. Not many mornings since, on arising, he proceeded to his mirror to humor an old habit—that of viewing his personnel—and was, no doubt, somewhat surprised and humiliated to se¢ the complete change that had taken place if: one single night. Instead of the pure and much envied -white, he looked upon the “gimon pure” -shade of the African. Even the lips had ’ “turned to the sun,” ‘and the nose assumed the flattened and clubbed shape—an indisputable characteristic of the “loved race.”” -We saw him this morning and. but for his carnest protests that this was he, we' should have localized a new barber in our midst. If such be the result of abolitionism—and we are compelled to -accept it as such—how many in our midst will still cling to its doctrines?; < 3
- Burrosk, Reub., the challenged party should consent to the desired “comparison of notes,” how about a competent committée to render the decision? . You must remember that Bro: Cox ‘is somewhat advanced in years, and might perhaps labor under some disadvantages in producing hig.argument in that formidable, poign:. ant shape that usually characterizes like efforts on part of younger heads. For. the purpose of insuring a fair and im‘partial trial, would it not be well to leave the decision to a committee selected from the editorial staff of the Revolution? You could tell the minute she ' entered the room; no luk%bf‘ topics after her advent. No one ever bfir' ied s “skeleton” so deep that her penet ting eye did not resurrect it. Why‘x; can tell you everything. No lluhuc.pljde, of boyish years does she ever forget, but there she stands ready to hurl in- your face, years after all others have forgad,on or remembers it only as the out-burst of s mischief-loving heart. How see msnages to store so ‘much in one head' has ever been a mystery, but certain it is that mot one single item, however unimportant, fiu ever been known to escape her remarkable memory. She can tell, (and she dolpe) the very day that Deacon Spriggs proposed to the Widow Nettleby, and almpost before the bewildered Deacon has time to collect hie scattered senses, the wh:ol_p town has been informed and euryi.;? g ‘setiled even to the color of the window - shutters. Then the pompous old judge ‘must be reminded that his great-grand-father was a tailor; and so thé Gircuit is ~made. The wisest, the oldest, the most respectable are not secure from -her malicious and annoying sttacks. We live side by side with a neighbor for half a life time knowing msught but good of hi’hx; yet, in & few hours we se¢ him lrzu‘ | formed into a hideous monster. And is it not true, that the great mass listen far too often to the idle tattle? How very few stand ready to give a helping hand or a kind word to the unfortunate; with what eagerness do the many listen to the idle tale of the scandal-monger, and by so doing lend disgraceful encouragement. Friend, the poke-bonnet has nearly ‘passed away, but the species it adorned is not yet extinet. Somebody gives the idlle word that helps to drive the erring éne from confidence; estranges them from their friends, and ultimately they are lost—hopelessly passed beyond the pale of redemption. Suppose we each examine our heart and see how much of this evil we find therein. Let us see if the poke-bonnet would not sit well on frizzed hair or a huge chignon. * % kR
