The blind wrath that followed thé erime defeated its own ends, ‘and was ‘productive of very small results. Tt left the murder shrouded in mystery, by sweeping down the innocent and.the guilty, and thereby shutting the door to evidence by hanging or intimidating witnesses. No ‘man dared say what he knew, for his knowledge was considered guilt, ‘with a swift, ready punishment in its wake, ; An intelligent - gtm&lgman, living in the neighborhoo fa(’)f Dr. Mudd, tolg me ‘thiat % fok ‘faets 'are” whigpered about the %fiy side ?‘,flrzwould have been of ihe gravest importance on the trial, but the witnesses were frightened py the indit;c;imh;:dte man--nerdn'w tc;(&@ Wz re alike cpndemmued. He told me with great hesitation and confidentially, that after Booth and . his;young cqmss.\iqw.hfl Dr. Mudd’s they wakened np alad living ina m:iaeruée huton the:-roadside, and _offered 'him: ten ' ‘dollars if he would ~guide.them to'gome ‘point on the Poto-' mac where' they eould find means to cross into Virginia. Whenever - their talk referred to their flight and escape, the more [silent one cursed - somebody for a coward and traitor,'in not putting out the lights.— “Had that beew-done, we might now be comfortalila in Washington,” he said sevieral timed ; to which his ecompanion rejilied with words of comfort and encouragement. et 17 In this way, then, the thiee pushed ton, climbing hills, crds‘ss'ing brooks, “l»ulsing farm honses hushed in ‘sleepy “until the broad Potomae was reached; and the guide received his pay and lofd them. g L O
5 When one considers the shattered condition of Booth’s leg, the indomitable will and powers of endurance, shawn in that midnight ride, come out in bold religf.’ What he must' have suffered ,in, mind and body defies common words to indicate. The Surrattville mattér of ropes and concealed weapons referred to a previously planned abduétion ‘that had long been abandoned, aud we reeognize in the great erime itself three conspirators, Booth; Payne, aud one anknown. It was evidently Booth’s iutention to. have the gas turned off.on ' the: report of the pistol, and’ the unknown murderer, whose daty it was to plunge the startled audience into utter ' darkness, failed him ' . at the critical moment, and so brought the chief actor on the stage, for all fo “gnze upon and recognize. - ' ' It was admifably planned, but had “the plan . been earried out there was yet a clue to the assasein, My friend, Capt.
