RAIN, rain, continues to be the order 'of the day, and ‘indeed the night, too, comes in for a full share. On Monday night the heaviest rain —in the memory of the oldest inhabitant—descended upon us. Forseveral hours it poufed down in sheets tjfit would have struck térror to the mountain climbing Antediluvians.

Our entire farming community are now actively engaged in cutting their wheat ci:)p. A great deal of difficulty is encountered in reaping the heavier growths, owing to the annoyingly tangled condition which universally prevails throughout, the entire county. Some of our husbandmen commenced gathering their whlzgt when top green, and we are infqrquéfihat all that was put into schock in that condition is spoiling. ‘

We were surprised while traveling in the coF;ntry a few: days since, to see hundreds \#)f actes of corn almost entirely choked w’fith weeds and grass, and not the least evidence that cultivation had been attcmp_tcdi Upon inquiry, however, we learned that it has been impossible to even hoe fields planted in low grounds. The crop|growing in mere favorable ficlds does not present a very flattering appearance for the late period of the season. - s Dl g

Tux Indian Doctor and Lecturer, Copway, who recently died at Ypsilanti, Mich.,, is not the Dr. G. A, Copway, “of the Ojibewa nation,” who recently victimized a number of our citizens. A letter from the latter's wife conveys the cheering intelligence that the “Dr.” is on a visit to Chicago, and will return to Elkhart by the 18th or 20th inst., when he will be happy %o settle those little accounts that he accidentally overlooked in his hasty departure from our midat, . ; ‘ — et Pl

Ir things are not grossly exaggerated anid ‘misrepresented, the radical officials having charge of the building of the new court;house at Gosben, have been guilty of j[l\mndering three or four thousand dolldrs of the people’s money in a most unj/ustifiablc manner. We shall take pains to ascertain the facts in the case, and lay them before our readers, without fear ot favor. Believing the exposure of fraud and corruption to be one of the first duties of public journalists, we shall'make no apology for invading the stcred soil of Elkhart county and uncoveying the transactions of her public servagnts, e ' ;

. O/Un attention has been “.called to a characteristic, low fling, emanating from ithq emasculated brain of Judson Palmiter, the man: who made his advent into the wotld with a goose quill in close proximity to his—aural organ. If the infallible, pure, noble-hearted, generous, upright but unfortunate jaundist finds it utterly impossible to stir. up a fuss with . some one in, his own immediate neighborhood, we might perhaps be induced to give him a slight” blast from one of our terrible and destructive “rebel” guns. Remember, dear Judson, that shots from this region are well aimed, and scarcely ever fail to hit their mark.

Eprrorral CoNVENTION.—We are surprised to read ir the last Warsaw Indianian that its editor ¢nsists upon having the editorial convention held in that ‘town. Whilst we, individually speaking, would have no objection to going to Warsaw, we cannot perceive the justness of Mr. Williams’ demand, especially upon taking into consideration the fact that there are 14 papers published on this line, whilst on the other there are only half that number. In'addition to this, the editors of Lagrange, Angola and Auburn will have from four to eighteen miles to travel by stage or private conveyance, in order to reach the railroad, and to ask them, after having traveled that distance—besides the railroad joura-ey-~to, take another 20 miles ride from ! ,Goshen to Warsaw, is certainly not very ‘reasonable. The Warsaw and Columbia City editors can very easily ‘come across, and meet their brethren of the press at Goshen, We believe in accommodating all, ’“*.tl."‘“ L::.,f&t,,wgc&x:mm wi_g:' ermi et us have the | mbtg l Gorhen, and." e orgmtation. It takes the BANNER to quote-poetry. For instance the lines: i “And a gong as sweet as a vesper’s chime,’ 1 _And the tunes with the roses are staying,’ herenders thusly: ; ‘*With a song as vheag as a vespers chime, o And the Junes with the roses are staying. The above extremely sharp. criticism occurred in last weeks Kendallville Standard. The point evidently aimed at is “With the Junes and the roses are staying,” and “cheap” in' the! first line, Mr. Myers, you must not in fature rely too implicitly upon your genis for your poetic criticisms, as you may theréby be led .into-—as in this instance—the embarrassing attitude of making yourself appear a wery stupid and gullible poetic critie. Tt certainly does not require more thana very small, ordinary mind, endowed with the minutest phrenological developement: of ideality, to see that “the Junes” is in perfect keeping in the above quotation, with the fact which is as old as the literature of our language, that the month of June has always been known as “the month of roses.” For yours, .as well as the benefit of our” numerous readers, we publish the entire beautiful poem, by B. F. Taylor, of Chicago, entitled “The Long Ago:” e : J
