W could, if so disposed, furnish our x;ead(_trs with an interesting narrative of a case of scandal, in which a certain amorous individual played a conspicuous role. A due regard for the feelings of the families of the principal actors, and an aversiondto the principle of kicking a man when he is down, restrains us from particulfirizing, although a severe castigation is richly deserved. = -
RAILROAD ACCIDENT.—~On last Satur day pight, the 3d <nst, a railroad employe, named John Maloy, was caught by thie'locomotive of the niglhit express near the west end of -the railroad bridge at Goshen, and catried some distance. From some cause the engineer did not discover the unfortunate occurrence, and the train passe%];fon, leaving his remains in a horribly ‘mangled condition, his body being literally cuf in twain, ;

The day was md in by firing a grand natiomal “salute, accompanied by the joyous peal of all our church and school-house bells, | Youmg America, too, was on hand at an unusnally early hour, fully prepared with guns, pistols, firecrackers, torpedoes, and every conceivable and villainous shape into which gunpowder can be put, for the purpose of making life hideous to guiet people, who do not care to get out of bed at an early ‘thour. Before eight o'clock the streets began to.be thronged by well-dressed, patriotic 3 . people from the country, who eame in wagons, buggies and upon horseback, by thousands. Every neighborhood in each township of the county was largely rep resented. Our neighboring towns upon the railroad seemed to vie with each othar’ fhtrjfing to not ho outdone in furniching their full share of all classes who scemed anxious to - gladden and enliven the joyous occasion by joining their voices in the grand patriotic chorus of praise to the “God of battles,” and the glorious old miartyrs of liberty, whose precious ‘blood secured to them the priceless boon of constitutionall iberty. At 10 o'clock ‘the vast concourse of people were formed ‘into procession by Capt. J. E. Braden and assistants, and, headed by the Goshen Silver Band, marched to the grove; and after a few brief remarks by the President of the day, Mr. J. B. Stoll, and ja'n eloquent and impressive - prayer by the Chaplain, Rev. G. Newton, kistened with an impressive silence to the reading, by Rev. L, Wml, of Waterloo City, of that immortal instrument dear to every American heart—the Declaration of Independence, which was followed by a scholarly, eloqncnq and patriotic oration by Rev. W. B. Hendryx, of Mishawaka. The thirteen toasts given by the regular committee, were eloquently and patriotically responded to. The singing by the accomplished - musiciahs composing the choir, was soul-stirring, and elicited the hearty applause of the vast multitude.— ‘ One of'the most intéresting and pleasing features of the occasion, was the reading, by Dr. Denny, of the following patriotic ‘“Anniversary Anthem,” written by Miss ‘Manda Levering. During the afternoon, a¥severe thunddr storm, accompanied with a deluge of rain/—unprecedented even for this season, —set in, and every store,shop and private residence were densely crowded by men, women and children.. About sundown the. drenching shower ceased, and although the nigfit was not a glorious one, such ‘&8 poots rave and lovers cannot sleep in, thousands remained to witness a grand pyrotechnie display, which commended as soon as darkness set in,and ended about 11 o’clock, by sending heavenward a monster balloon by Wm. With the exception of a few fast young men, whose patriotic - hilarity prompted them to imbibe a little too freely of lager and villainous benzine, the oceasion passed off quite & pleasantly and successfully as the most sanguine could have wished.
