N s i Tar SiaNs or .THE TIMES:~—A young lady of this place who ranks herself with the elite, while calling at, the house of a lady friend on Cavin street the other day was seen to throw out signals to two strange gnntlemen’ passifig along upon the sidewalk. Such conduet is certainly very unbecoming to any lady, but, we presume this is the “fashioh” East. e b ; .OUR republican friendB would do us a special favor by giving the article headed “Negro barbarism and its power at the capital of the United States,” which may. be found on the first page of to-days papery anattentive perusal. It is a very interesting and instructive expose of the character of the motley crowd that has, by the votes of such men as congressman| Billy: Williams, obtained possession of the municipal government of Washington. !

" A Flutter in the Loyal Family. An interesting trial was heard before Justice Beebe on Moniay last, wherein Wm. Hills was plaintiff and W. W Skillen defendant. The suit was instituted for the purpose of gaining possession of a building occupied by the latter as an office—Hills claiming that Skillen was his tenant, whilst the modern expounder of the law relating to the manufacturing business,. claithed the building s his own. The jury decided in favor of Skillen. . _ During the progress of the trial, Stéph Lockhart was, among others, brought to the stand as a witness for plaintiffies. Seareely hid his testinmiony been given, when Skillen conceived the brilliant idea of impeaching the veracity of the chief of the radical party of Perry and adjoining townships. Witnesses of the radical persuasion were at once subpeenaed, who swore that Steph co,ulddlot be believed under oath, and that his character was exceedingly bad. The opponents of Steph ~—men who haye fréquently suffered defeat in their political aspirations by his superior strategy—were in high glee ¢ver their temporary triumph, but it was not long before Steph appeared on the field of battle and bravely met his enemies. He called up; one after another, our: oldest and most respected citizens, who clicerfully bore testimony to his truthfulness as a witness, and his standing as a citizen. It was soon evident tliat Steph had won a decided and glorious -vigtory, and that Skillen & Co. were entirgly discomfitted.

Whilst we have no desire to interfere in this interesting little family quarrel, Wwe cannot refrain from. expressing our ‘surprise that.an’ individual having ino 'many valnerable points a 8 W. W. Skillen should undertake to fasten the charge of Iperjury and disreputable (character upon a fellow ‘'man who is in every respect—morally, religiously and| mentally—his superior, and to whose forbearance and generous nature he is indebted to the very position he now holds. | ik : “*Oh, how like a serpent’s! tooth it is To have a thankless child.” - ~ "Nothing could induce us to become the apologist for Steph’s manifold sins that he has committed in’ the service of his: party. We are well aware that there ‘ is nothing to which he would not resort to further his partisan ends, yet it is an ‘undeniable fact that—outside the cesspool of politics—he frequently exhibits traits ~of the gentleman, the obliging citizen, and the ULenefactor of his fellow man, -whilst on the other hand, his ‘malicious persecutor, W. ‘W. Skillen,” has never been known todisplay any of these ennobling qualities and gencrous impulses.

A MEeETING of landholiders of Benton, ‘Perry, Sparta and Turkey Creek town ships was held at the Town Hall on Saturday last, for the purpose of organizing a Ditching Association, .in . accordance with the provisions of the. new ditching law. The new ditching law will prove very beneficial 'to the- entire State, and it should be the object of all who desire the improvement of our agriicultural country, to;make. the contemplated Ditching ‘}Assdoiatiqny & .success, and; thereby secure the ‘benefits contemplated: by the new law. lAn -adjourned meeting will be held at the Town Hall; Ligonier, at. 2 o'cloek, and it is edrnestly hoped thut a large attendance will be had: |
