Lee, late command-er-of the confederate army, arrived here at an‘early hour this morning from Baltimore, accompanied: l;y Mr. and Mrs. Daggart, old Baltimore friends of the General. They proceeded at once to the residence of a friend in Georgetown. About 11 o'clock Gen. Lee: droveto the E:xecutive Mansion, and, sending in his ‘card, , was admitted tothe Presid%ht without delay. When he cntered the ante room at the White House there were many. pers'?rgs present waiting to see the President among them several members of Congress, Lee was recognjzed by some of them, and a general buzz ran around the room— There's Genernl Lee—wonder what he wants here ?. Geoneral Deat was assiduous in hisattentions and lost no time in getting Lee's card before “ the President. There weve*some balf dozen - persons, mostly Coongressmen, in the President’s room, at the time, on various sorts of business. Most of them were after office and wanted to press their claims upon the President. As soon as he got Lee's ~ eard bowever, li¢ said to the Conggessional office hunteis: “(Gientleman, you will have to excuse me; I have an engagement with General Lée, Who is now waiting to keep it, and I wish our ‘interview to be private. © This was a broad hint for the Congresimen toretire.
