~ On Wednesday, about noon, a young man, by. the name of A. D. Livingston, of New York city, and more recently of Leesburgh, Kosciuskn Co., suddenly fell down on the pavement in front of Mr. Nellis’ house in this town. He was carried in and kindly cared for by Mr. Nellis and his family. It seemns ,{{om information gained from him that he was a soldier g:ring the rebellion, and that the is subject to thesé spasms, which are he result of a wound received in battle. He is the same Livingato’n" that planted the glorious Stars and Stripes upon the spire of Trinity church in the early. part of the war, and while performing that glorious feat the spectators below raised a purse of three hundred dollars, and presented it to him immediately upon his descent.— At this writing he is reported in a com{ortable condition and will doubtless be able to resume his journey east in a few days.—Journal. e We noticed Sheriff Kiser in town Monday with a few of his le%al sticking plasters, but he informs us that most of his patients live in the western part of the county at present, consequently our columns are barren of his venditioni exponas.—Standard, . ©urious Freak of Lightning. A most remarkable freak oflightning, saysthe Eendullville Standard of last week, was made manifest on the farm of A. D, Whitford, two miles east of this ciiy, Saturday afternoon, 15th inst,— The rod on his horse-barn was struck, but either in gionsequence of improper insnlation, or the incapacity of the rod to conduct the electric current, or from some other causes, it left the rod near the sill and entered the building, shivering the sill, poste, studding and siding, and also scattering the stone foundation the length of the bharn—d4ofeet—throwing large stone ten and twelve feet, and ripping the siding off from four to six feet high.— About one-half of the floor was torn up, and spread the building so that a part of the joist and chamber floor fell down. Two carriages were considerably damaged, but a mare and ¢olt, in the barn at the time, escaped uninjured except that they appear to be deaf. The most. remarkable feature, however, is the fact that 'W. H. Whitford, son of A.'D. Whitford, was in the barn at the time, and escaped alive. He gays the last thing he remembers previous to the shock, was that he was sitting in the barn within three feet of the side. that was struck, and the next thing that he knew, he was about three rods from the barn, in the road, going towards the barn. How he came there, he has nio knowledge. He does not appear to be in the least injured except a partial deafness, from which he is gradually recovering. It seems almost incredible that he could escape alive from such a lively place. The rod was melted in 8 number of places: end fagments scattered in every direction, It burned into boards or whatever it fell upon, and one piece was thrown severai rods and wrapped around a post.. The roof took fire where the rod passed over it, but the fire was extinguished. The barn was insured by the Coldwater :Premium Lightning Rod Co., of Coldwater, Mich., and their “‘gnarantee” will be tested. A
KeroSENE Test.—The Scientific American gives the following mode of testing kerosene: Fill a cup with warm water, the temperature of which is to be brought to 100 degrees Fahrenheit; pour the oil on the water; apply & match 'or otherwise. If the oil is unsafe it will take fire, and its use in the lamp is dangerous, for it is liable to explode. But if the oil is safe and good it will not take fire. s
